Lorem Ipsum: Link Types

Redirect Skipping

Obsolete anchor URLs cannot be redirected by nginx, and so readers must click through manually. redirect-from-id attributes attempt to skip this.

Both sections below should, if directly visited, skip automatically to the /rtx URL. They exercise two different features: the first tests the most common case of a ‘split out’ essay; the second tests obsolete anchor links (usually preserved as an empty span element like <span id="rtx"></span>.)

Silent Redirect

Sometimes we don’t want to create a visible link (or section), we just want to redirect a hash. We can do this by creating a ‘hidden’ or ‘invisible’ link, using CSS to hide it, like [foo](/bar){redirect-from-id="baz" style="display:none;"}. This will still work.

[Visit /lorem-link#rtx-silent to exercise this test-case.]

Within-Page Redirect

Sometimes things within pages are renamed, not split out to another page. We can sometimes fix this by adding an anchor, but the redirect machinery could also be used. We currently do not allow this.

This within-page redirect link should not work.

To test this null functionality, visit /lorem-link#within-page-redirect.

  1. The baroque complexity of Sendmail possibly contributed to its infamous reputation for insecurity—it was one of the exploit vectors of the Morris worm, and for years shipped with a remote root backdoor (WIZ).↩︎

  2. Dwarf Fortress provides clockwork mechanisms, so TC is unsurprising; but the water is implemented as a simple cellular automation, so there might be more ways of getting TC in DF! The DF wiki currently lists 4 potential ways of creating logic gates: the fluids, the clockwork mechanisms, mine-carts, and creature/animal logic gates involving doors+pressure-sensors.↩︎
