Cicero (§1.10.32 of De finibus bonorum et malorum, 45 BC)

The possibilities of developing an atomic weapon and the desirability of doing it secretly were discussed at a Princeton University conference in which I participated in March 193986yaBohr said this rare variety could not be separated from common uranium except by turning the country into a gigantic factory. Bohr was worried that this could be done and that an atomic bomb could be developed—but he hoped that neither could be accomplished. Years later, when Bohr came to Los Alamos, I was prepared to say, “You see . . .” But before I could open my mouth, he said: “You see, I told you it couldn’t be done without turning the whole country into a factory. You have done just that.”

Edward Teller1

In Memoriam, Christopher Alexander (1936862022).

All questions asked by five watched experts amaze the judge. Back in June we delivered oxygen equipment of the same size. The wizard quickly jinxed the gnomes before they vaporized. We promptly judged antique ivory buckles for the next prize. Jim quickly realized that the beautiful gowns are expensive.

Interviews

  • Leonard Nimoy: He is mean. He is really mean. I’ve been telling people this for years. Now, I want you to believe me tonight, I’m not kidding, he’s mean, he’s a mean person. He stole my bicycle.

  • William Shatner: I didn’t steal your bicycle.

  • L. Nimoy: Yes, he did. He stole my bicycle.

  • W. Shatner: I’m gonna tell you the story—

  • Nimoy: And it was not once.

  • Shatner: I tell you what we do—

  • LN: He took advantage of a person in need.

  • WS: When were you in need?

  • N: Of a person struggling, a person in pain. He did! He hurt me, badly. I want you to know that. Is this being taped? Is somebody taping this? I want it on record, you know?

[Shatner puts his arm around Nimoy’s neck and kisses his ear.]

  • S: I wouldn’t hurt you for the world, Leonard, but the problem was every time they’d call lunch you’d get on your bike and bicycle down to the commissary and get ahead…

  • N: That’s the logical thing to do.

[Nimoy walks away and goes to the speaker’s pulpit]

  • S: Is it something I said?

  • N: I’m looking for the water. You want some water? It’s true. I had a bicycle. I had my name on it, too. That’s right. It said it right there. It said: ‘Leonard Nimoy’ and I spelled it correctly, too. That’s because we had not much time to get from the stage to the commissary, get to lunch, get to the make-up department, get the ears touched up and get to work. So, I used the bicycle.

And one day I walked out the stage and my bicycle was gone. Right! So I came up to the stage and I was kind of upset. And I said: ‘who took my bicycle? Come on guys, I took it here for a reason’.

  • S: It was chained.

  • N: Now, my friend here decides to have some fun with me. So one day after I had complained, he got my bicycle and he tied it to a rope and they put it into the rafters. And the ceiling is higher than the ceiling here on the sound stage.

And when I said: ‘Where’s my bicycle?’, he starts laughing ‘hahaha’. I mean is that funny, to hide a guy’s bicycle? And I was in bad shape at the time I could hardly walk. Bill took advantage of a guy who is hurt. I want some sympathy. Wait a minute!

    [“ooooooooh!!” from the audience]

  • S: Because I had to get lunch, too… So he got wire-cutters the next day, opened the chain so that he got his bike. So the following day…

  • N: I remember everything!

  • S: I bred Dobermann as well as horses. A Dobermann is a great dog. Very territorial, they love their masters.

  • N: His dogs are meaner than he is. And that’s not easy!

This is a short paragraph. It has a collapse wrapper, but it should not collapse, as that doesn’t save any space, and it looks distracting.

Small Collapse

This is a section testing ‘small’ collapses (.collapse-small), which show the minimum possible: one line. So you should not be able to read this when collapsed.

This is another ‘small’ collapsed div. You may be able to read this when it’s collapsed.

But you shouldn’t be able to read this part when it’s collapsed.

Mismatch

This is a span-level abstract inside a div collapse. This is the rest of the collapse. We need this to check that mixing a span-inside-div works along with the usual div-inside-div approach to writing the abstracts for a collapse. When writing, you should make sure they match, of course, but you might have writing reasons to use a mixed span, or you might refactor and move things around, and what once matched no longer matches (and this would break things in hard-to-notice-or-debug ways). We do not test the div-inside-span mismatch case because it appears to be nearly impossible to write that in Pandoc Markdown in a way which doesn't yield horribly-broken HTML, so there is no need to handle it or test that case specially.

Secondary Abstract

Copy of abstract of article summarizing the page. For design philosophy, see the About page. This is a test page which exercises all standard functionality and features of Gwern.net, from standard Pandoc Markdown like blockquotes/headers/tables/images, to custom features like sidenotes, margin notes, left/right-floated and width-full images, columns, epigraphs, admonitions, small/wide tables, collapse sections, link annotations, link icons.

Test of blockquote:

About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just
walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy
life and the torturer’s horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Bruegel’s “Icarus”, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
