Texas man arrested after 'dark web' attempt to buy explosives and blow up building

A Texas man has been arrested after allegedly trying to buy explosives off the "dark web" and blow up someone's truck and house.

Cary Lee Ogborn was charged with attempting to transport explosives after trying to gain access to bomb materials through an anonymous marketplace only accessible through the "Tor network."

Federal court documents say that the 50-year-old Houston resident used the website AlphaBay, which hid his IP address and uses payment mostly in the digital currency Bitcoins.

The boat repairman used the screenname "boatmanstv" and sent an unsolicited message to another user who was actually an undercover FBI employee, according to prosecutors.

During a conversation where the supposed vendor spoke in broken English, Ogborn said that he needed a bomb detonator device to blow up a 20ft x 40ft wood shed.

During a two-week span in August and earlier this month, the pair then negotiated over price before deciding on a package that included dynamite, a grenade and a detonator built into a car key.

An FBI employee posing as a weapons vendor sent the suspect a picture of dynamite and a detonator.

Ogborn said that he did not want to kill anyone, but was planning on destroying a man's truck with the grenade and then blowing up his house when he went outside to look at the damage.

He was arrested last Friday after picking up a package he allegedly thought was full of explosives from a mailbox he registered under a fake name.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Ogborn has been convicted several times since 1989 for auto theft and cocaine possession, along with insurance fraud and lying about a stolen car.

In 2013, he posted on Facebook that he was a "freed rebel" after serving 90 days for illegally possessing an AR-15 assault-style rifle.

The Department of Justice says he now faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted in the failed bomb plot.
