Police bust Dunedin drug ring

Dunedin police say they have busted a "sophisticated" drug operation that tried to import LSD, methamphetamine and ecstasy via the internet for the local market.

Three men, aged between 18 and 20, appeared in Dunedin District Court today charged with a range of drug offences.

It followed Customs intercepting drugs bound for Dunedin and an operation trying to track down the importers.

Tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs was intercepted although the exact value is unknown, police say.

"Evidence suggests that these importations had all been sourced through the internet from the United States and Europe in a sophisticated operation and were destined for the local Dunedin market," said Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis.

Police have noticed an increase in people ordering illegal drugs over the internet.

He warned that importing drugs could attract a 14-year jail term.

"Some offenders think that they can hide behind a computer screen and carry out these illegal activities. Rest assured that this is not the case."
