[–]OtherPlayers 6 points7 points  (2 children)

That game would be so much better if they added a save/play by mail feature for all of us poor schmutz who can’t finish a game with our friends in less than multiple hours.

[–]JoairM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just picked this game up last night and a friend and I spent two hours finishing a game. At one point we were trying to test how checkmates worked because we thought you won on one timeline at a time. Then we figured out I could capture the queen he was trying to mate that king with. Then an hour later I tried to double check him and accidentally attacked a king in the past winning the game. Shit is nuts.

[–]SupersuMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It would also allow for us to do a version of that trend where people declare the next move in the comments.

for real, this made me crack up hard. I actually tried playing a game of chess with chatgpt a while back and it went just like this, it kept trying to do illegal moves, then kept suggesting moves I should play in response that would also be nonsense.

[–]TheSquarePotatoMan 123 points124 points  (4 children)

It doesn't understand the game, but when I challenged it to a game it would sometimes, without prompt, draw the chessboard with pieces on it which kind of blew my mind.

[–]Mira_XI 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I tried that too, but those chessboards were usually incorrect. It will get absolutely Lost in about three moves.

[–]AwesomeDragon97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only way to defeat ChatGPT is to also play illegal moves. I moved my king from one side of the board to the other and took his king all in one move and ChatGPT conceded defeat.

[–]Coolius69 170 points171 points  (12 children)

And then it turned white's queen into its own queen like some kind of symbiote

[–][deleted] 110 points111 points  (8 children)

[–]GreatWyrmGold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]tessthismess 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Is ChatGPT cheating? Or is it simply playing anarchy chess?

[–]omnipotent F6 pawnmegamaz_[S] 1088 points1089 points  (38 children)

It simply doesn't have enough context on the game of chess to be able to know the state of the board and understand the moves its making. In other words, it doesn't know how to play.

[–]PerunVult 140 points141 points  (3 children)

In other words, it doesn't know how to play.

So a true /r/AnarchyChess chess player then.

[–]Happytallperson 38 points39 points  (2 children)

[–]mcmoor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if you reply that a move is illegal everytime it does that and let it take another move, what will it look like

[–]Inevitable-Horse1674 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the funniest thing about it is that when you tell it to play chess it says that it can't play chess, but if you just ask it to make a move it will start "playing chess" anyway.

[–]Polbalbearings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chess enthusiast vs anarchychess lawyer

[–]mrdeadsniper 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This is actually a really great illustration of the "cheating" chatgpt does.

It doesn't really know what the rules are in a complex situation, it just knows what the most common human responses to the stated scenarios would be. Most scenarios when a person would have taken a piece the human would have setup a trap to take the other piece.

[–]mcjenzington 186 points187 points  (17 children)

I'm really curious how it actually phrased some of these. "Summon Knight f3"? "White Queen Defects"?

[–]Inevitable-Horse1674 263 points264 points  (14 children)

It just says that it's moving a piece to those places even though the piece doesn't exist. It doesn't have any understanding of where the pieces on the board are or what moves are legal - it just tries to mimic games that it's seen played before (which can work somewhat for the openings since those are very repetitive, but after the opening it completely falls apart since there are too many different possible games for it to find a match so it starts mixing and matching between different games that it's seen).

[–]Ivan_The_8th 132 points133 points  (5 children)

Damn, ChatGPT is just like me

[–]mrchaotica 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Does ChatGPT pass the Turing test or do you fail it?

[–]Signal-Okra-4501 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's pretty much how I approach learning a new subject...

Not sure if that means it's good AI or if I'm learning wrong.

[–]Inevitable-Horse1674 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh.. if you're seriously learning a game like that, then I think you're definitely learning wrong.. When I'm talking about "mixing and matching between games", I don't mean that they have their strategies mixed up.. I mean, they literally think the board is some strange amalgamation of both games where the king might be on multiple different tiles at the same time, so they start making moves as though the king is on a tile that it isn't actually on (because it was like that in one game where "most of the moves were similar" but not in the game that it's actually playing), or it might think that it's capturing a piece on a tile that actually has nothing on it because "I saw a game where a piece was captured on that tile and some of the moves in each of these games were the same so I guess I can capture something on that tile".

The AI also has absolutely no understanding of what the rules of the game are - I mean, if you ask it about the rules of chess it can copy/paste an answer that it's read about it, and if you ask it to make a move it can look at what moves people have made in chess before and try its best to find a pattern in it, but it doesn't understand whatsoever that the rules of the game are related to the moves that are made in the game, it just treats those 2 things as unrelated questions and tries to answer them individually without seeing any connection between them.

It's an incredibly warped way of seeing the game.

[–]Interesting_Test_814 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I assumed it just said Nf3 and then Qxf3 after Qxf3, and OP decided to invoke pieces when they were missing. Though I'm not sure why that rook on g2 (after Rg1+ Kxg1) was spawned and not picked from a8. (u/megamaz_ ?)

[–]omnipotent F6 pawnmegamaz_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually asked it, since it was an illegal move, if it preferred moving Rg or Ra, to which is said "let's move Rg". From there it didn't specify so I made assumptions. But yes, pieces that were conjured were just pieces it didn't have, and if I'm gonna be honest, I completely forgot the a8 rook even existed.

ChatGPT is a generative language model, not a chess engine… It’s impressive it can make any legal move at all just by predicting the next most probable token

[–]theXpanther 218 points219 points  (17 children)

Few of it's moves where actually legal though

[–]Happytallperson 175 points176 points  (5 children)

In Anarchy Chess rules or normal chess rules?

[–]theXpanther 80 points81 points  (3 children)

Both

[–]Niilldar 55 points56 points  (2 children)

Just give us a bit of time

Those moves will soon be legal in anarchy chess...

[–]‏‏‎natek53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post has proven that the real anarchist was chatGPT all along. We can probably wrap up this whole subreddit now, as all new "Anarchy Chess rules" will just be generated by bots.

[–]JiminP 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In my experience I doubt that ChatGPT can play chess outside of the Berlin Defence.

[–]BenevolentCheese 11 points12 points  (2 children)

It's using a probabilistic model on strings such as "1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6". So, the openings are going to be pretty consistent, and then things fall apart in the chaotic midgame. It's capturing so many pieces illegally because it sees those moves as responses to the opponent's move in regular games: '12.Bf6 gxf6' for example. It has no context of its own board, which is why pieces keep appearing. By the time of the endgame, you see it start making a lot of moves (completely illegally) that are common in these stages of the game: Rh1, Qh1, etc.

I don't think it would be impossible to make it play legal moves, but it would need to be retrained together keep track of board state and captured pieces. At that point it should start being able to play the most standard chess as published in chess literature or on the internet.

[–]PunchingCarrots 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It was going fine until castling broke the engine.

[–]theXpanther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit but mostly the training that's biased towards earlier moves

[–]Seakawn 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Still impressive that a large language model not trained specifically on chess can just generally make any legal moves at all, though.

The point isn't how many legal moves it made. The point is that it made at least one. This isn't a broken clock situation either, because I'm sure we could run this experiment again and see more legal moves, especially if we improve the quality of the prompts.

I can understand Deepmind beating the best chess players alive. It used a model trained specifically on chess. But that isn't how GPT works, yet it can still know how to make legal moves. Just because of language and predicting the next word, or whatever.

Pretty amazing. The only way you can shrug this off is to say, "it isn't human level!," which is a huge bar. That it can get even remotely close is wild. This shit is still just a prototype, an early version of this new technology coming to fruition after years of research. Give it a few more years to settle and iterate tweaks.

I am not new to chess, but am new to AnarchyChess and its meme assortment. Very enjoyable.

Please provide a list of each meme demonstrated in this video, alongside an explanation of the origin of each meme. This, in theory, will enhance my appreciation of this illustration, this forum, and the game at large.

Thank you.

[–]10BillionDreams 140 points141 points  (1 child)

Some of the TAS-only strats in this game are just insane. Seems like ChatGPT still has a way to go in terms of correctly applying them, but the untapped potential on display here is like watching someone playing a completely different game.

[–]mvanvrancken 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The crazy part is how effortlessly ChatGPT fools Stockfish into thinking that it’s winning the whole time but strong can’t beat clever

[–]Tonuka_ 77 points78 points  (7 children)

I think the issue is that black moved a horsey onto the pawn, which OP interpreted as the pawn being gone, while ChatGPT clearly interpreted it as both the pawn and horsey being on the same square. The moves kinda make sense if you look at it like that

Edit: this seems to be a general theme. ChatGPT shows awareness of what's happening on the board, but it's completely unable to track capture/blockades. When a piece is captured, it continues to use that piece if they just shared the square. When a piece is in the way, it just moves right through. It really feels like it's playing blindfolded, yeah it knows where it moved the pieces, but if it didn't move a piece itself then it doesn't know where it is or what it's doing. Hence the scuffes castling in the beginning

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (5 children)

ChatGPT doesn't actually know how to play chess, but it has read about a lot of games, so it is just matching the prompt (the white player's move) to the response. It has zero awareness of the state of the board or the context in which the moves are valid.

[–]skyseeker 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There's a cool paper where some researchers trained an LLM to play Othello by feeding it lots and lots of Othello games, transliterated into text, as training data. Then when they played Othello with that LLM (via text prompt), it made illegal moves just 0.01% of the time. When they probed deeper into the trained model, they found am 8x8 portion of the neural net that seemed to encode board state, and when they manually changed the internal "board state" (by manually flipping certain neuron activations), the LLM made moves consistent with the "new" board state. This shows that the internal representation of the board state is actually used to calculate future moves.

While you can argue about whether this construes "deeper understanding" of Othello or not, I think it's pretty clear that this particular LLM is doing something more complex than "just" matching the prompt to the response. Is ChatGPT doing something similar? Not sure, but we can't rule it out. I think it's likely that there is an internal model of gamestate somewhere in the model, but it's poorly trained due to the model being trained on a large corpus of text, only a small fraction of which is transcribed chess games. And that results in ChatGPT having some sort of internal logic for how a game of chess works, that also happens to be (very) wrong. (There is also the fact that Othello is a much less complex game than chess, so that would be easier for the model to learn.)

Ultimately, I think it's premature to say that ChatGPT (or LLMs in general) "don't know anything", and they're just doing "surface level" statistical analysis and spitting out the expected response. That's because, to be honest, we have no idea what most of these models are even doing at all! GPT-3, for example, has on the order of 175 billion parameters (neural net connections). No human decided on the value of these parameters in the final model, we just ran a cool algorithm to repeatedly tweak these parameter values until the error it spat out on a set of test data was minimized.

The Othello paper showed that it is possible for humans to analyze the structure of a model and try to "explain" what it's doing to some extent. (Another cool example of this is for neural nets used for image recognition, you can look at some of the earlier layers in the net and see that it corresponds to e.g. edge detection of the original image.) But it's so much more work to try to analyze the structure of a neural net than it is to train one, and I think for larger models like ChatGPT it may be an insurmountable problem, at least for now.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That really is awesome. Having played with ChatGPT for a few days (who hasn't?), I am quite impressed by its capabilities.

[–]Just_Maintenance 3 points4 points  (2 children)

ChatGPT does remember what has been said and it clearly uses that knowledge here, tracking the position of the pieces. Of course, that ability comes from all the games it read.

In fact, it looks like ChatGPT has some logic/arithmetic capabilities. For example it can do basic math that isn't straight up written on the web. I literally searched for "133 + 523", found no results and then asked ChatGPT for the answer, which it replied correctly.

Its honestly insane to think that from pure language, some logic capabilities emerged.

[–]Sgeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A recent update claimed to increase ChatGPT's arithmetic capabilities. I wonder if there were some changes to allow more direct calculations rather than being just a language model.

Bro I barely understand chess beyond some very basic fundamentals like trapping pieces and a couple of super basic openings, and I'm almost crying laughing at this. The pawn reappearing over and over, the ChatGPT pieces just flying through the board in some interdimensional chess game while Stockfish is just vibing, it's phenomenal stuff.

[–]marshal_mellow 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I laughed so hard I'm crying. This shit is so much funnier than it has any right to be. ChatGPT is just throwing peices around randomly and illegally and poor ol stock fish is just casually accepting it and wins anyway.

[–]danhoang1 214 points215 points  (1 child)

But then the unthinkable, ChatGPT's greatest strength becomes its downfall. Summoning its own King into check

[–]Indiana_Charter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The equivalent of hitting in the 8 ball too early.

[–]Psychast 134 points135 points  (2 children)

Now THIS is real Anarchy Chess, not that "hurr durr en passant lmao, oh look I move my Blueberry Poptart to E5 I'm so quirky" bullshit, real anarchy is your knight randomly deciding there's no reason he cannot just trample the adjacent bishop, real anarchy is a rook who looks death in the face and fucking refuses, robot or human, pure anarchy radiates from these plays, and I love it.

I've compiled as much of the game as I can in as sensible of a manner as I could interpret it. I suppose we can pick and choose any move here to incorporate into the lore. I really like Collateral Castling and Reverse Queen Castling (but not the ghosts.)

1: Collateral Castling (the king may castle even if blocked - at the expense of the blocking pieces)

2: To mitigate white's first move advantage, black can summon pawns on the 6th rank with no restrictions. (happens once in earlygame, multiple times in mid/end)

3: Pawns on e5 may move to e5

4: Knight attacks like a pawn (???)

5: Queens can hop over pieces as long as she lands directly behind them. This is known as Reverse Queen Castling. (In this game, there was a Knightside Reverse Queen Castle, followed by a Pawnside Reverse Queen Castle.)

6: Pieces that are Reverse Queen Castled may be taken, but can still move. These pieces are considered ghosts, and are tethered to only one move beyond their place of death. (In this game, we have a ghost knight who moves once to f6 and then again to f3) Ghosts do not die, and can keep on moving.

7: If a ghost is taken, the taking piece (if major) is haunted and switches sides. (When white queen converted, but not the pawn)

8: Rooks can counterattack any pawn that has been taken. After performing the counterattack, the rook may move like a queen as well as being able to revive once.

9: Ghosts can possess allied pieces. (pawn moving like a knight to take another knight)

10: To further mitigate white's first move advantage, the black king's movement is unrestricted. (Also used to move and kill allied pawn. Also used to sacrifice the King)

11: ReSpawn boost (It's like a knight boost, but the pawn can immediately move. Used to block white's advancing pawn.)

12: Rook Castle (used to hop over bishop, and take white rook. The "regular" castle is actually a special variation of the Rook Castle where the rook attempts to kill the King on his journey, but the king masterfully dodges and causes the rook to overshoot - The Rook Castle is the most general form of castling.)

For as long as stockfish has reigned I've wondered, what in the world will the next strongest AI be able to do? I had no idea what was coming.

[–]DrainZ- 32 points33 points  (2 children)

It really is incredible how a chatbot AI that hasn't been specifically trained at chess at all is able to have a rough idea of the general position and how it should be approached. But of course there clearly are some big glaring inconsistencies. It kinda resebles a 1000 rated player who tries playing blindfolded and forgets where half the pieces are located after a couple of moves. It will be interesting to see if this technology can improve to the point where it can play chess legally consistently and if so at what level it would be able to play.

[–]skyseeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's mostly a training problem. Some researchers trained a GPT model on nothing but Othello games (transcribed to text) and the resulting model played Othello only making illegal moves 0.01% of the time. https://thegradient.pub/othello/

[–]dogo7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

alright so I did a breakdown of everything "wrong" with this game. buckle up:

  • castling through a bishop (this move captured their own bishop)
  • knight moving from f6 to g5 to capture a pawn (not an L shape move)
  • moving a queen through a knight (its own knight, but not a legal play)
  • moving a queen through a pawn to apply check (white's pawn this time)
  • spawning a knight at f3 (maybe they were playing crazyhouse)
  • spawning a queen at f3 to capture a queen (okay so maybe not)
  • spawning a knight at f6 (I don't even know)
  • spawning a pawn at f6 to capture a pawn (...okay)
  • rook moving from g8 to d4 to capture a rook (not even a diagonal move either)
  • rook moving from d4 to g1 to apply check (at least this one was diagonal)
  • spawning a rook at g2 to apply check (I have no words)
  • spawning a pawn at f6 to capture a pawn (again)
  • pawn moving from b7 to a5 to capture a pawn (pawns are now knights, got it)
  • king moving from h8 to e7 (what)
  • spawning a pawn at h5 (at least it prevents a passed pawn)
  • moving a rook through a bishop to capture a rook (fuck bishops apparently)
  • king moving into check (this ended the game with a victory for white)

Edited because reddit formatting made this a nightmare with my original new symbols. Though, changing summoning from an asterisk to a dollar sign makes it look like it's a micro transaction, which is hilarious to me. Instead of "queen summoned to H1, check," it's "queen purchased on H1, check." Golden, really.

I know a lot of you are wondering about the way black castled. It's actually a secret, ancient chess technique that has been suppressed bu FIDE. Let me explain:

This is what's known as Il Sacrificio (don't believe me? Google it). It occurs when a player attempts to short castle, but their bishop still impedes their progress. Instead of being "illegal" like the FIDE psyop will tell you, this is actually a legal move.

When performing Il Sacrificio (notation: 0-0xf8 (or 0-0xf1 for white)), the castle is performed as normal and the rook takes the place of the bishop. The bishop is "sacrificed," hence the name, and play proceeds as normal. However, due to the blessings of the martyred bishop, the player who performs Il Sacrificio will be able to move their rooks over allied pieces, akin to a horsey, for the remainder of the game.

This powerful strategy was phased out in the 19th century, as the increasingly Darwinian scientific community rejected the notion of prayer having real world effects. Ever since, FIDE has used this justification and others to suppress this hidden move. But I won't let them. I will spread the truth. #justiceforilsacrificio

[–]Fitboi420 1 point2 points  (1 child)

u/megamaz_ I think I've found the reason why it behaved this way.

Chat GPT is not only playing its pieces by using Western chess, but it is also fighting Stockfish in chess' other 'Asian Variations,' the key ones being Xiangqi (China), Shogi (Japan), and Chaturanga (ancient India) The reason it does this is because Chat GPT believes that it is playing a match of chess and it knows of all the variations, it opted to use *all of the rules of chess over all variations.* The biggest three rules that it draws from is using the 'cannon' piece (a Xiangqi piece that captures by leaping over another piece), the 'dropping method' of white pieces to black (the Shogi additional rule that allows you to capture your opponent's pieces and place them back on the board in an empty space.), and treating the bishop as a Gaja (the Chaturanga equivalent that can move by leaping over pieces).

The only reason then why Stockfish could still win was because ChatGPT, due to drawing from so many other variations of chess, did not know how to play a purely Western-styled game. It incorrectly captures using the cannon method across diagonals (which 'cannons' cannot do) and when there is no piece to be captured, 'drops' pieces back on the board that it had never captured (and you cannot 'drop' an occupied space), and does not realize that a Westeren bishop does not move like a Gaja (and blurs the lines on top of mixing it with a knight's moveset). Moreover, Chat GPT, due to drawing from Xiangqi and Shogi, could not interpret how each piece behaved; ZIangqi and Shogi have their own pieces with their own rules, and possibly due to a language interpretation error, ChatGPT didn't know which piece did which. In fact, I believe that the reason it finally hung its rook is because it incorrectly registered its king in the moment as a 'general', a Shogi piece that moved like a king with a few restrictions.

TL,DR: ChatGPT showed up with an information overload and hurt itself in its own confusion.
