[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Nah using type as a graphic is very common in contemporary print design, the only problem with the type here is that it's not ornate enough for the eye to read as a graphic. The designer had the right idea just okay execution

[–]ricksoaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, a huge pile of turd on top of your tv is original and eye drawing. Doesn't make it cool tho.

[–]akcayelet's add more gradients and shadows 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's only a waste of space if they couldn't fit in other content that they needed to fit in because of it. Designers don't start with the initial and see where it goes. They look at how much text they have, how many and how big their pictures are, and how many pages they have to fill with that content. Initials are a good way to fill up space that can't be filled with pictures or anything else.

That being said, the initial should have been closer to the text, or inverted with a background box to fill more space.

[–]eaglebtcplz recycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of “initial cap” and “drop cap” but never just “initial.”

This is just a drop cap. It’s not really “crappy” design. This is kind of an exaggerated use of it, but it’s not exactly uncommon to see this in magazines.

“In illuminated manuscripts, initials with images inside them, such as those illustrated here, are known as historiated initials. They were an invention of the Insular art of the British Isles in the eighth century. Initials containing, typically, plant-form spirals with small figures of animals or humans that do not represent a specific person or scene are known as "inhabited" initials. Certain important initials, such as the Beatus initial or "B" of Beatus vir... at the opening of Psalm 1 at the start of a vulgate Latin psalter, could occupy a whole page of a manuscript.”

Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Initial

[–]obsessedcrf 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Drop cap where the first letter doesn't look like part of the text is crappy design. It clearly reads a "hirty" not "thirty"

[–]Boudrodog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a valid point. Skinny little T ain’t the most commanding drop cap. For greater effect, they should’ve used a word that starts with an O, M, or G.

Many medieval manuscripts also made the beginning letter huge. However, those medieval giant letters were decorated and doubled as letters and illustrations in their own right. A random giant T like the one in the pic is just lazy.

[–]Zed_the_Shinobi 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I am one of the writers for a church magazine. We are rather popular in my country, but still keep a low page count because idontevenknow (maybe because the price is so low?).

That's why we often need to shorten our works, cut out some texts completely. So damn this makes me angry and envious at the same time.

And not only when it comes to newspapers. People in general who have a lot of resources and/or opportunities and don't use them. Man, you could do so much with so little, and you just...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, time to start writing... Big ass T

Edit: words

[–]rocklikeastone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case someone was wondering, this type of letter is an “initial” or a “drop cap.”made popular in Illuminated manuscripts. But my brief research also told me it started because ancient Latin texts didn’t have caps and lower case so words were blended together. The initial helped distinguish the beginning of the paragraph.

Pretty sure this time as a stylistic choice.

[–]fxuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is ilarious

[–]Bogus_Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having flashbacks to all of my typography classes and my profs insisting I make the first page of an article, the drop cap. It looks cool sometimes and I definitely try it out when I am putting together a layout, but it's also the sort of thing only a graphic designer would appreciate.

It's very complicated." And Nico Rosberg said he pressed during the race, I don't remember what race, the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you to both. Is Formula 1 driving today too complicated with 20 and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future, concerning technical program during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?
