Startup lore includes the founder of FedEx taking the last of the company money to Vegas and winning enough to keep the company alive playing blackjack. My favorite counter-story to that are whispers that he did a drug run for the mob and called his earnings blackjack winnings.

I have no idea if that story is true, but I have to admit… If you’re the owner of a small fleet of private aircraft, smuggling some drugs seems like a more reliable way to make some quick cash than running to a casino to gamble.

I’ve never heard the counterstory — but I immediately believe it!

My favorite wild story is about how Seymour Cray used to dig tunnels under his house when inventing supercomputers because there were elves down there who told him how to do it.

I love that blackjack story. I also worry a bunch of founders ended up losing their final funds on blackjack over the years due to its hype.

the drug run story seems more legitimate and logical. he already has the distribution nailed down... why would he risk the money in a casino?

I had to play poker just to keep the lights on in one of my startups.

How could he ensure that they wouldn’t call him again tho

tbh the drug run story seems more fiducially responsible

that's not really cool to go slander someone based on a rumor that they engaged in illegal activity. seriously. sounds clever though, so congrats
