Update on @OpenAI situation: Many sources tell me fruitful negotiations are taking place now between @sama side (he has a crew of well known outside tech pals helping like @bchesky and @btaylor) and the board side, who are repped by @adamdangelo and interim ceo @eshear.

The @Microsoft folks are being kept up to speed and sources said that is how @satyanadella wants it. With a 49 percent stake, they are likely to get board seats — maybe two (Satya basically said he would no longer be surprised in my interview with him yesterday.)

My take: Sam will be back at OpenAI as CEO, there will be a new and larger board (maybe one of current ones stays on it, but others will be indemnified and depart), new clear practices on communications between CEO and board and stronger safety rules.

On the hype side, let’s try to tone down bountiful future nonsense — we’ve heard it before and only some people got obscenely wealthy while the rest of us got the bill for the problems. AI will be great and it could be awful — it’s complex, so try to be an adult about it.

Now I am off to pick up my most excellent son at the airport. He’s coming home from his first semester at college, so don’t ruin my night you often irksome, never boring techies

Smaller VC investors not part of it. @ilyasut is obvi recused given he signed the letter to oust himself.

One thing that would help is more transparency from all — this current board has been a cipher and a little too doomsday focused. How about we all figure out how to benefit from the tech and put guardrails in place in anticipation of the obvious dangers? Work for you? Works for me.

I think it will stay a nonprofit with a profit arm. But maybe there is a simpler structure that is not so prone to disagreement and Succession style hijinks. This is about money and power for sure, but it’s also about good innovation. If you can’t work it out, as Logan Roy notes …

I have a lot more deets that I am still getting multiple sources to confirm, but it would be great if it got settled before Thanksgiving so the 770 committed employees could chillax and enjoy the holiday without the largely unnecessary drama that has resulted here.

and - of note: half of the “board side” (Emmet) is siding against the board unless they provide evidence
