𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 1The most striking thing is Steinhardt was well-aware of existing models & inner-monologue approaches but still thought it'd take longer than since GPT models have existed. twitter.com/MichaelTrazzi/…

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 7After some more tweaking: yes, those subscripts look quite nice if I do say so myself. Definitely feels more skimmable, more compact, more uniform. pic.twitter.com/IdNdDKlSde

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 26Any Mozilla devs know what's going on? This hit me weeks ago, making PDFs *very* hard to read (colors disappear from graphs, citation fns invisible), no discussion I can find, and my only solution thus far is editing about:config's `pdfjs.pageColorsBackground`/fg to del 'canvas'. twitter.com/ALE_spaces/sta…

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 17As the annual mortality rate of the 70yo (SSA: avg 2.2%) is still going to be closer to a 74yo (3.1%) than a 40yo (0.2%), what this shows is mostly that neither MRI scans nor muscle mass have much to do with aging mortality.

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 5Like a dog returning to its vomit, I'm unable to stop fiddling with tweaks to citation formatting. The standard 'et al' is just 𝘴𝘰 bad and I have to look at it so many times a day I can't forget about it. #3, ellipsis + subscript date, continues to look best. pic.twitter.com/4wcfJRxYto

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 13Is it all that rare to have positive hiveminds? Childhood's End, Foundation, Futurama, Starmaker, Dune, Night Land, Ender's Game (initially negative but subverted)... These are certainly not obscure or uninfluential SF works!

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 5Worth remembering the first version is always the worst, and then R&D progress & experience curves kick in. BERT may've cost $2000 in 2018, but it costs $50 today: arxiv.org/abs/2104.07705

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 16Today in book scanning: a seller listing gave me pause by noting that it came from the estate of Nobelist Donald Glaser (bubble chamber), inscribed from the author to Glaser. It'd be shredded by the service after scanning, of course...
Did it anyway. I think he'd understand.
𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 1I am however now fully happy with the appearance & navigation experience of the tags, so that's done.
Next thing there is to figure out how to get embeddings into R so I can begin auto-tagging new annotations & clustering old over-populated tags into better sub-tags.

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 20This is a remarkable demonstration of how many languages are an unimaginative reskinning of ALGOL semantics and syntax.

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 16(I'm up to $3400 in book scan for 2022 thus far if anyone was wondering.)
𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 1Surprisingly difficult has been revising the tag popups to be properly double-column: the scraping code has long since passed the 'clever hack but bad idea' event horizon, and then it needed shortcuts & compression, then it had a bunch of interactions with the partials... 🙄 pic.twitter.com/7bZtxok54N

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 17The problem isn't arguing that 'cultural technologies' (whatever that is) is more important (for now) than agency, the problem is denying agency even as we have robots trundling around powered by those very large language models and very obvious things like Gato 2 in the pipeline

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 30The extent of sharing of Eva/Nadia is truly uncanny even if you know this. Like, ep22 has beat-for-beat parallel scenes to EoE's Misato and Ritsuko death scenes. I mean exact, down to posture. It even answers the Gendo's silent line question! (Yes, it was ~"I truly loved you".)
𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernJul 8Of course, he was just relaying the connectionist viewpoint there from Moravec et al. There were only so many ways to extrapolate Moore's law or ballpark human brain FLOPS, so unless you went full Penrose (you never go full Penrose), within that paradigm, you will get 2020-2050.
