    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 8 I'll be in Las Vegas for DEFCON Thursday-Tuesday. Who'd be good to talk to, or what else should I do there? (Don't gamble & I've done Hoover Dam/machine-guns/Cirque/Penn-Teller/pinball-museum.)

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 12 Random tip: if you need to carry or move a dense heavy but awkward object, use your head. Those villagers aren't balancing jugs on their head for photographs and laughs. It actually works quite well, especially for hard luggage on bad surfaces like rough asphalt or gravel etc.

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 20 Current use-cases: append link-bibliography transclusion at end of page, so readers can 'just keep scrolling' to read all refs in detail; make link-biblios & tags lazy to compile & load faster (bc recursive, doesn't break anything); 'highlight' links by transcluding annotations.

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 19 Particularly worth noting the Breen Affair: LeGuin certainly didn't walk away from her own Omelas (also with many more than 1 child), it seems...

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 17 Heard terrible joke: Q. "What's a negative utilitarian's SI unit for measuring brains?" A. "hertz" (It is terrible because life is terrible.)

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 26 One silly thing: our collapse functionality cooperates with the lazy-transclusion, ofc, so now there are *3* ways to do a Choose Your Own Adventure on . The obvious way with separate HTML pages, recursive popups, and now lazy-transcludes of collapsed links.

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 20 (None of this really fundamentally changes anything. I'm still thinking about what I can do with dynamic transcludes that would be different, as opposed to optimization or a more maintainable copy-paste.)

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 14 This is pretty hilarious. Don't they remember stuff like the furries sending fake DMCA takedowns to This Fursona Does Not Exist, or making up claims 'this sample X copied from artist Y even though I can't find the Y original'? And that it both didn't work and didn't stop NNs?

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 12 the elites don't want you to know but descriptors like numbers are free variables, and you can always make another by adding one. you can take them home and use them for anything. I have #458.

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 2 I continue to be stunned. So in the *next* episode, they wash ashore, where Nadia comments how disappointing (even... kimochi warui?) they aren't in Africa before they collapse; time has passed, shown by rust; and a small child builds & destroys sand castle of NERV/Atlantis.

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 23 Something which was equally true about a decade ago, and yet, still a lot of relatively small datasets squatted upon by little emperors. What's different now?

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 19 ...Are you arguing that we shouldn't fund any x-risk research because some names are blandly similar? Because many of these groups do totally different things. (Quick: what does MIRI do that is exactly the same as CFI? Or Christiano's ARC, for that matter?)

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Aug 20 From watching old people, I think the truth is much more melancholy: like obsessions with mowing or going grocery shopping daily, it's about make-work to kill time and feel useful in retirement. You can always yell at your grandkids to turn off the lights or close the door.
