𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 16Are there no good text document embedding APIs?
OA API: none still. Jurassic: none. Google/Azure: none, just random tasks like classification. Cohere: just averaging words. AWS: word2vec lol. Hugging Face: only sentence-level/roll your own?
Does everyone just run BERT locally?

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 22As a kid looking up book refs, papers/journals confused me. I knew each book had an ISBN, and the Library of Congress always had 1 copy of each ISBN... but what ID did I give my public librarian when I wanted a paper? Who was in charge of IDs & hosting?
The answer was: "no one".

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 22This is why my site is 53GB now, and I always get a twinge of fear when I see a pre-1990 paper with no DOI, but all books merely provoke a sigh:
a book I can usually get for $20; a paper might be anything from '1s w/Google Scholar hotkey' to 'multi-continent decadal odyssey'.
𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 25Speaking of jokes, I was reading Kafka's "Investigations of a Dog" gwern.net/docs/fiction/1… and was unreasonably pleased I figured out "soaring dogs" where most can't (& before I looked it up: gwern.net/docs/fiction/2…).
Yes, even literary greats make dumb jokes about ad jingles.
𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 17Pretty pleasant so far. It's too slow to parse the site except as a cron job, but that's fine. Linking density definitely improving.
Anyway, next thing: mobile scroll header which usefully reports ToC position. Should help mobile readers with being 'lost'. Very crude mockup: pic.twitter.com/ccv6pwu0nC

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 1While napping I had a sudden thought about a lazy jack-o-lantern, using the underside of a pumpkin: "Goatse pumpkin".
I just checked Google Images and omg what is wrong with us

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 10And for the semi-automatic link rewrites, a script to parse all of gwern.net for existing links/anchor pairs and import them into Emacs for interactive search-and-replace.
haha 20.7k `query-replace` calls go brrrr pic.twitter.com/ToVV8xcebO
𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 22Looking back, it's something to realize how completely siloed/firewalled off academic publishing was from everything else. My public library was a good one, and I think it didn't even subscribe to _Science_/_Nature_. Drive to a nearby university? Using what catalogue, exactly?

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 20(The real question being, since injecting yellow fever infected blood *should* cause 'human to human infection', what with being how mosquitoes transmit it, why did Ffirth escape infection from his blood injections and reach an erroneous conclusion about miasmas?)

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 21Yes, it's causal. No, it's not on actual intelligence, any more than the Head Start or ABCdarian gains were on intelligence as opposed to being artifactual gains: eg ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P… Note how they skate very quickly over their earlier work in the discussion.

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 2You can buy pro fantasy illustrations of characters for $100‽ My conclusion: I and lots of other writers are badly underspending on art commissions to illustrate/decorate our writing. twitter.com/MooCheese/stat…

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 25I liked it because it's a great reductio of the "maybe the aliens are all around and doing stuff" Great Silence 'explanation'. No, we'd notice, just like real dogs are *very* very aware we provide food. (Just look at a dog around a Thanksgiving dinner table.)

𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫@gwernNov 19Before you put too much weight on this, remember this is 100% GSS data dropping (as is much of what you'll read about American opinions for the next few months), and there have been major questions raised about the religious data in particular for 2020/2021.
