    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 16 Are there no good text document embedding APIs? OA API: none still. Jurassic: none. Google/Azure: none, just random tasks like classification. Cohere: just averaging words. AWS: word2vec lol. Hugging Face: only sentence-level/roll your own? Does everyone just run BERT locally?

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 22 As a kid looking up book refs, papers/journals confused me. I knew each book had an ISBN, and the Library of Congress always had 1 copy of each ISBN... but what ID did I give my public librarian when I wanted a paper? Who was in charge of IDs & hosting? The answer was: "no one".

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 22 This is why my site is 53GB now, and I always get a twinge of fear when I see a pre-1990 paper with no DOI, but all books merely provoke a sigh: a book I can usually get for $20; a paper might be anything from '1s w/Google Scholar hotkey' to 'multi-continent decadal odyssey'.

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 17 Pretty pleasant so far. It's too slow to parse the site except as a cron job, but that's fine. Linking density definitely improving. Anyway, next thing: mobile scroll header which usefully reports ToC position. Should help mobile readers with being 'lost'. Very crude mockup:

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 1 While napping I had a sudden thought about a lazy jack-o-lantern, using the underside of a pumpkin: "Goatse pumpkin". I just checked Google Images and omg what is wrong with us

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 22 Looking back, it's something to realize how completely siloed/firewalled off academic publishing was from everything else. My public library was a good one, and I think it didn't even subscribe to _Science_/_Nature_. Drive to a nearby university? Using what catalogue, exactly?

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 20 (The real question being, since injecting yellow fever infected blood *should* cause 'human to human infection', what with being how mosquitoes transmit it, why did Ffirth escape infection from his blood injections and reach an erroneous conclusion about miasmas?)

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 17 For the same reason that Toyota is currently out lobbying about the joys of internal combustion engines and how hydrogen is the future.

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 25 I liked it because it's a great reductio of the "maybe the aliens are all around and doing stuff" Great Silence 'explanation'. No, we'd notice, just like real dogs are *very* very aware we provide food. (Just look at a dog around a Thanksgiving dinner table.)

    • 𝔊𝔴𝔢𝔯𝔫 @gwern Nov 19 Before you put too much weight on this, remember this is 100% GSS data dropping (as is much of what you'll read about American opinions for the next few months), and there have been major questions raised about the religious data in particular for 2020/2021.
