Title: Anyone tried Oz's powdered shrooms?
Post by: SusAsFuck on May 02, 2012, 08:04 pm
I'm very interested in getting an order of shrooms from OZ. Does anyone know how good they are? Should I choose a different vendor if I'm looking for shrooms? Any feedback on him would be really appreciated. He's domestic for me so it would be great if things were good with him.

Do you have the url? I've never heard of powdered shrooms, curious as to what they're powdered with.

Powdered shrooms or "shroom flour" or "shroom dust" is just dried whole fungi that have been ground (often in a coffe grinder). I personally don't care for it.. having had a LOT of powder go bad (non-active) sitting in a freezer.. but other people have other preferences. It's certainly safer (detection wise) to store and ship fungi ground down into powder.. That much is certain.

To answer OP, no I haven't tried this particular product but concur with previous posters that powder/capsules are safer from detection.  Dried shrooms are quite distinctive in appearance.  Some folks report an easier come up, I suppose since the shrooms dust is further along in your gullet by the time the capsules dissolve, thus eliminating some of the digestive issues folks occasionally have.

As far as it going bad, I've heard reports of people keeping shroom powder around for over a year with little or no reduction in the active components.  Perhaps I'm wrong Philter, but I suspect your powder was stored in plastic of some kind (bags, tupperware, etc).  Plastic is permeable by oxygen, which in my opinion is the chief degrading component of active compounds.  Freezing in such containers could exacerbate your issue, as most modern freezers (ie, "frost free") continually cycle temperatures which allows ice crystal build up...remember that perfectly dry organic matter attracts water vapor which will sneak in through your plastic over time.

Store mushrooms and mushroom powder in glass, preferably Ball-type canning jars.  An oxygen absorber (like the non-edible packet in beef jerky) would certainly help, as would pumping all of the air out of the container using a vacuum sealer.  Freezer is fine, but I think you'll find a nice dark cabinet at normal room temperatures will suit just fine.

Apologies for the thread hijack and my overuse of parenthesis - just trying to spread some good info.

Jeff,
Thank you for your thoughts. As a grower I'm always glad to see a hypothesis potentially falsiable by an experimental setup. I'll make a point to grind down some of my present harvest and store it in freezer bags, mylar sealed with oxy-absorbers and inside glass and test them after 6 months.
As you very perceptively speculated the product that went bad/non-active was indeed sealed inside doubled up freezer bags in a "frost free" freezer that was opened up on a regular basis to pull out food and such.
If shroom dust CAN be stored and it's potency preserved it would be a boon to my operation. Thank you for educating me and I will definitely be testing it out experimentally.
I could kick myself.. 4 POUNDS wasted.. for want of CANNING JARS and cheap oxy-absorber packets? ARRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Philter3 - the mylar may be the absolute best choice, especially if you can vacuum seal it...that is how I store my dried hops.  Hops are notoriously vulnerable to oxygen and will smell/taste like shitty cheese without mylar love.  For my jars, I use a "canister" cap that fits over the lid.  I then use a ziplock hand pump to get out most of the air, think it was about 5 bucks (don't have a vacuum sealer anymore).  Works like a champ.  Four pounds saddens me.

What? Your not supposed to eat the packets in the beef jerky?

Thanks for the info though, I had never even heard of shroom capsules or powder prior to SR.
