I was wondering if anyone knew about the rules with using fake names for P.O. Boxes? I am worried that I won't be able to receive my packages unless I use my real name and I really don't want to do that. If the package is bigger than the box, they put a slip in my box and I have to bring them the slip to get my package. I've heard that in order to retrieve the package, your ID has to match the name on the package. Is this true?
Also, does anyone know the laws on receiving packages and using fake names?

Not sure: this is the biggest danger, for the buyer: pickup. We can have all the security encryption, what have u, in the middle, but if we can't cover this area...we aren't covered at all...not sure of the answer: I spend a lot of time trying to figure the safest way to achieve the same goal, and so far, nothing I've come up with it is totally satisfactory...many go to trouble of getting fake i.d., just so they can open a box...but still...

You need 2 forms of ID to open a box so it is pretty much impossible to get one under a different name.
-
Yep, that's what it appears is the case...the problem is how to get a spot, without revealing yourself...I mean abandoned houses and all that: but the postmen are pretty aware, plus it's just too easy to loose track of stuff that way...I've got a couple ideas, so far not quite panned out, u know, places that have weekly meetings, but have a mailbox...u don't want to get caught w/your hand in a strange mailbox either...
I know it isn't talked about often, but I think that for a buyer, this is the most important area of all. I can't say more, since I don't want to reveal anything about me, but you definitely have to look around, maybe think outside the box...I'm not happy with my solution yet...

Just get a quality fake drivers license and create an utility bill in Photoshop. That's what I did for a private mailbox at the UPS store.

To collect a package that was too big for the PO box, you must either show ID that proves you are the recipient or ID along with a third party pickup authorization. So a fake ID could be used to pick up the package.

Alright well, I guess I will need to tell the post office that I am expecting a package under a different name. I used my initials (almost) so it hopefully won't appear to be too sketchy.
-
I called the post office today and asked them if using a different name was ok. They said it might be a problem if I used a completely different name, but I could use an initial (ie Mr. K) or just my first name or something. I'm sure some variation of my real name would be okay too, but I'd rather not do that. I have yet to receive any packages (just placed an order) but I'll keep updating to let anyone know who is also curious.
Another thing to consider is getting a business box, which is about $15 more for a 6 month rental. That way you can use a name like Cortex Inc. or something. I might actually upgrade to a business box just to feel safer, but first I want to see how it goes with this order.

from janetreno Former Postal Inspection Service Intern AMA on SR
"Fake names going to residences is not advised, unless you are going to make one purchase and never receive drugs in the mail again at that address. The risk here is that the mailman is going to notice a pattern of some kind that didn't exist before, that suggests illegal activity, and will report it to an inspector. Getting a package with a different fake name a couple of times a month is going to arouse suspicion."
-
Exactly. And if you get a fake name, and get a box, and they get suspicious, you are in even more trouble..at least at your house, it'd be hard to pin it on you...Two things: gotta wander the neighborhood, find houses that are recently vacant. Have a good, plausible excuse for fiddling around those houses, "...and why were you sticking your hand in their mailbox, sir?" And finally, be prepared to loose a few: people have forwarded mail, or are still checking old box...
As I've said elsewhere, *this* for a buyer, is our biggest concern. I can play all day long with getting my computer nice and tight, but this is the real weak area...or a bogus seller, that's not good either...
-
you think I would be better off just using my real name?
-
I think using a fake name puts you more at risk.

post workers around here are too busy to notice "patterns" in fake names or whatever.I eveb at least get one random letter delivered to my home address (correct address) with a wrong name. the post man never cares or notices.
-
I read all, but I still think, that if you have to use yer home addy, it's safer to have *consistent* fake address: "...yeah, I remember that kid, what was his name?, he asked if I wouldn't mind if he had his mail sent to my address, until he got on his feet...nice kid, I just stick the mail here in this crack, in case he comes by for it..."
Nothing's perfect...just gotta have an excuse ready, no big deal either way: yer address, someone elses...main problem is, u can't use it too often, or mailman notices...as mine did :( ...
