Can I browse/shop silk road market via tor installed on my desktop or is it not completely anonymous? I'm trying to use the search feature to find some anonymous ways to browse but it keeps freezing!

It sounds like you need to lurk moar in the forums before going on SR.

Sure, that's the quickest way to do it. Some people like to use a bootable usb with tails or liberte... i'd look into that if you want a more secure setup.

From my limited knowledge, TOR is not the weak link in your set up. Access to your computer (and therefore evidence that you are using TOR) is.
I have TOR loaded in a hidden volume on a USB thumb drive (google TrueCrypt to find the program I use). There is no obvious trace of TOR on my actual computer, and in an emergency I can simply destroy the thumb drive. If it's confiscated it's unreadable without a password (just says it needs formatting to be used, unless you have the right program), and if I'm forced to give up the password I give up a simple password that will reveal some mildly embarassing photographs and that's about it. TOR and related data are hidden within the encrypted file, and without actually knowing the long, complicated password no-one will ever know it exists, let alone be able to use it against me. (As I said, I have limited knowledge and I'm happy to be corrected here).
I suggest you download TrueCrypt and put TOR in a hidden volume on a thumb drive. It's easier than you think, just follow the prompts.
(Also use a multiple-pass file eraser when you clear it off your desktop)

Better yet, use a second, hard drive less computer. Boot via an up-to-date Liberty/TAILS Live CD and you have a pretty darn secure setup.
