So many stats have decrimnalized possession of marijuana while others have made it legal for medical use and 2 have made it completly legal for recreational use. So my question is now that they many states have used this loophole top relax marijuana laws is it time to legalize other psychedelics for medical use?
-
Its my belief they all drugs should be legal. With that in mind the focus should be on taxing it and using the money towards drug education programs as well as reabilitation programs. People are going to get whatever they want anyway. The difference is you deflate the underground market and put the money back into programs that help people.
-
It's high time to just legalize every drug like Portugal did and spend all that prosecution and incarceration money on helping out addicts that are willing to ask for the help they need. If I'm not mistaken Ketamine already has accepted and legal medical uses for treating depression. Your main problem with getting all these things legalized is all the people who profit off of it being illegal.

Much agreed I have always said that Portugals model for dealing with drugs is a marvolus example of what the world should be doing.

Anything that grows in the ground shouldn't be illegal in the first place.

^^this should be common knowlege but sadly it is not

As the others have said, I support general legalization, but if we're going to take it one step at a time, I say it's time for medicine to take another look at LSD.
Agreed

I think all drugs should be legal and regulated
-
Perhaps its also a matter of how you deal with it.
In most western European countries possessing illicit drugs is a crime, but if the amounts are such that they could be considered to be for personal use only, people rarely face prison time. In some countries they are fined, in other they drugs are confiscated and no further problem follows.
Sliding the scale like that may not seem ideologically correct, but it does have its practical consequences. At some point people will begin asking why possession is de facto legal, while selling is not. As soon as the end users have nothing to fear from the legal system, the supply chain is likely to follow.

In a true democracy, people can do whatever they like as long as they don't harm others or take their rights away. All drugs should be either decriminalised or legalised and regulated.
There is absolutely no reason to make drugs illegal and punish drug users and sellers. Most drug users are casual drug users and fit in with the rest of society and harm nobody except perhaps themselves. As adults, we should have the right to make decisions to what we put in out body. It makes no sense that I can legally consume 1 litre of spirits every day, but if I choose to use MDMA, LSD, Cocaine, amphetamine or marijuana every now and then, I am treated as a criminal. Criminalising drugs only adds to their harm potential because drug users are uneducated and have no idea what the purity of their drugs are or if their pills contain PMA, etc. Expert scientific and medical research has shown that cannabis, MDMA & LSD are all less harmful and less addictive than tobacco and alcohol.
It's about time all drugs are legalised and regulated. Drugs are very easy to obtain as it is. Countries that have decriminalised drugs have shown the number of drug users to remain steady of even decline and HIV and other disease rates attributed to drug use have dropped sharply. Governments around the world need to legalise, regulate and tax all drugs. The products we buy would be a certain and known purity. The money raised from taxes could fund education and harm reduction. At the moment the Government is losing billions of dollars every year by keeping drugs illegal and drug users are dying because of inconsistent drug quality.
I hope that now that marijuana is fully legal for anybody of age in 2 states of the United States, other States and other countries will follow. There is no reason why drug users need to fear about being caught with drugs. It is unfair to target drug users and punish us as criminals simply because we use something the Governments around the world have decided should be banned!

So i should be able to buy a ball of coke or meth at the gas station with my pack of smokes? I'm down with that. Legalize it all!

Maybe not at the gas station. Haha, that would make it a bit much of an impulse buy. Maybe just at pharmacies / designated shops. Obviously they would have warnings on them so people know that can be addictive & cause harm.
But at the end of the day it's your own choice. Adults should be able to decide what they consume. We do not need Governments to "protect" us. It infuriates me that the Government controls so many aspects of peoples lives. It only seems to be getting worse too.

Yeah the saddest part is drugs in children's hands. This is coming from someone that used heavily as long as i can remember. I found it harder to obtain a pack of smokes, and a beer than i did to get me a blunt and a bump. I'm not saying that the tobacco and alcohol industries are shining examples. But, some form of system that taxes and regulates is better than none. I don't ever see this happening in my lifetime simply because of profit. They would loose money going legal and would lead to a lot of people possibly getting hurt physically. It's one thing to say something, it's another to play with someones way of income.

Well there would be advantages and disadvantages for the economy. But fuck the economy. It's not as important as reducing harm and getting drug users out of jail!
I think the economy would be far better off though. Prisons cost massive amounts of money and a huge majority of people in prison are in there for drug related offences.
I live in Australia, where the Government apparently promotes harm reduction, but that is a load of crap.
There is often sniffer dogs than enter clubs and catch loads of people with a couple of pills, bit of speed, etc.
Here, posession of a drug is usually just a large fine ($500+) and therefore I think it is just another form of revenue raising.
Outside music festivals, there are always sniffer dogs. But honestly, they do more harm than good. People panic when they see the sniffer dogs and consume all their drugs at once and then an hour or so later they are fucked off their faces.
Even if they aren't legalised, I would like to see pill testing available at nightlife hotspots, clubs, etc. In a major city in Australia a few months ago 5 people died from a bad batch of pills in one night. The police knew several weeks earlier that there was a bad batch and alot of people were overdosing. But they refused to publicise it, and that resulted in the deaths, which infuriates me. Five peoples lives could have been saved if pill testing was available or if the bad batch was announced publicly. The pills reportedly contained PMA, not MDMA.
And yes, it would certainly reduce the amount of young people using drugs. I know in high school it was easier to get weed (and cheaper) than alcohol.

YES! All drugs should be legal but if you were to legalize them one at a time then LSD, mushrooms, mescaline, and DMT should all be legalized first. I personally think they are more beneficial to the average person than marijuana. (Not to knock cannabis)

Okay once again agreed but does anyone have any ideas on how to implement these goals. I mean how do you convince the large majority of people who only know the negatives about these drugs and don`t want to even listen let alone learn how they are wrong. Essentaily how do we get the average middle aged straight and sober person to see the value in legalization of all drugs ideas? Most people are excepting of control because of the illusion of safety it gives them. So my suggestion is over our life times to slowly tear down sections of the wall of prohabition and use a model similar to Portugal`s drug policy educate and decriminalize. Instead of just trying to completely demolish it and proably failing.

You can't...
I remember once I told someone I use ecstasy and they told me that I deserve to die and every pill will kill.
I told them to do some research on MDMA and they refused to believe ay of the scientific evidence that MDMA isn't very harmful. They honestly believed all the articles were a load of crap and they still believe drugs kill and everyone who uses drugs will die and deserves to die...
Some people...

The potential breakthroughs are unimaginable.
QFT. Tryptamines truly amaze me, not just in their effects, but in the ways they operate on/with the brain.

How do you get anything else done (at least in the United States)? get big business involved.. I know this flies counter to the beliefs of a number of members on the forum here, but the quickest easiest way to get some of these drugs introduced to the general public on a broader scale is to enlist the support of the large, deep pocketed pharma companies. Some of the drugs such as LSD and MDMA already have a history of use in a therapeutic setting, so it would not be a tough sell for pharma companies which likely already have extensive political lobbying activities. If one firm pushed for further research and investigation into the medical benefits of these compounds before any others they could likely monetize this through exclusive access/permits from federal agencies, leading to significant first mover advantage. This would provide the incentive for the pharma companies to use their signficant influence. As testing and trials confirm that the substances are useful in a medical setting, the company could push for rescheduling of the drug due to potential medical uses, while good public relations campaigns and promotional marketing communications would help to convince the general public of the beneficial uses of this. Granted, this situation is not ideal since control of the manufacturing and distribution of the drug would initially be limited to big pharma companies, however it would have several benefits that should further improve the situation over time:
First, it would relax governmental regulation of (and therefore punishment for) possession and distribution of some of the chemicals. For example, if LSD and MDMA were to be rescheduled in a lower schedule, the degree of criminalization that would apply to possession and distribution of the drugs would be changed to coincide with other less serious chemicals. Instead of a hefty prison sentence, a person may just be fined or order to drug rehabilitation program (much as the legal status of marijuana is in a large portion of states); eventually this would (hopefully) lead to full decriminalization.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, it would subtly alter the general public's conception of and attitude toward the chemicals. It is sad to admit, but the US is a very pharmaceutical oriented environment. However, it does mean that the citizens are more likely to accept chemicals that have received big pharma's stamp of approval. Changing the minds of consumers would remove the stigma against the use of these drugs and of psychedelics in general.
Finally, should some pharmaceutical company be successful in implementing this situation, the supply and ease of access of the drugs would be increased. Even if the drugs were still fairly strictly regulated, there would be guaranteed manufacture and distribution of the drug by the pharma company, and it would only be a matter of obtaining it, either legitimately or illegitimately. Accompanying this would be a corresponding drop in price of the substances as the supply increases. This improvement would be drastically increased with a rescheduling of the substances.
Anyways just wanted to contribute to the discussion : )

I agree with all of what you said. People should definitely not be criminalised and even imprisoned because they use or distribute drugs. It's the same as any other product or business. A seller sells a product in exchange for currency. If tobacco is legal, there is no way in hell MDMA, LSD, amphetamine or marijuana should be illegal!
And sadly, as much as I'd love for pharmaceutical companies to be able to use MDMA for theraputic use, I doubt it will happen in the next 20 years.
The Government has so strongly enforced the message "drugs are bad. You will die," that a vast majority of people actually believe it. Any move to legalise it would be very quickly knocked down by anti-drug groups. All they are achieving is taking away other people's rights and contributing to organised crime groups and taking potential tax revenue from the Government. Meanwhile, drugs are everywhere and with every seizure and arrest made, not even a dent is made in supply.
-
The most important thing to consider here is that government policy is -NOT- based on science, at all.
Traditionally, most countries allow the legal production, sale and use of alcohol and tobacco.
Scientifically, they would classify on the end of being very addictive and destructive compared to other drugs available. There is no ration reason to assume that smoking a joint would be more harmful than drinking a beer and/or having a cigarette. This is common knowledge, i doubt you'll find any independent scientist to tell you otherwise.
The problem is that we don't look at these things with a scientific perspective at all: people consider things like alcohol and nicotine as god-given substances to use, whereas all others should be illegal. I'm quite sure that the amount of harm would be reduced if you could get a population to switch from alcohol and tobacco to using cannabis and lsd instead. Doing so may be politically impossible for now, but that doesn't bunk the science behind it.

i have read that mexico has legalized all drugs for personal consumption!! its too bad they are in such a turmoil..

can you post the a link to the site you read that at cause I have never heard of mexico doing this I am pretty sure they have signed on to the controled substances acts. Portugul did something similar to this maybe that is who you are refering to. But they decriminalized all drugs and replaced jail time withrehab. No present day county (to my knowlege) has completly legalized all drugs.

I have also read somewhere (from a reliable source on the internet) that drugs are decriminalised in Mexico for small quantities. Not legalised, just decriminalised. SO technically it's illegal, but it's not enforced. Although Mexico runs on a system of corruption anyway, so I can't see how people in previous decades have had a problem with being arrested for drug possession... they could have just paid a bribe! Drugs are also decriminalised in Portugal

yes thanks jorg796 for clarifying, decriminalized, although i heard the amount drugs like L is very small ug
-
Yes, mexico did this in 2009. It's nice to get it official, but the police are so corrupt down there (not as bad as it used to be, but still) that you really need to worry more about blackmail than an arrest. They will tend to look the other way on personal, but here are the exact amounts.
"The maximum amount of marijuana for "personal use" under the new law is 5 grams — the equivalent of about four joints. The limit is a half-gram for cocaine, the equivalent of about four "lines." For other drugs, the limits are 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams for methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams for LSD."
The LSD is absurd as that is 15 ug, less than 1/5 of a good hit.

DMtisinME the reason i think mexico did that is so the next step will be just buy the drugs from an authorized govenment supply,be it doctor or clinic.i think they figured out the money involved, and drugs arent going anywhere.it might be a way to cut into dealers pockets.

I think weed will be legal in a few years from now...
spain is already legalizing its growns... so...

Sorry for the delayed response, I had not put an earnest effort into answering this question until I was asked to speak out against the war on drugs at various public events and conventions a few weeks ago.
Here is what I think is an excellent model for legalization:
First off, there would be an immediate surplus of roughly $64 billion due to taxation and no money spent on enforcing drug laws. After legalization I would modify the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms to be the bureau of drugs and firearms. They’re current budget is roughly $1.2 billion. Let’s say for arguments sake that all the new drugs caused their budget to skyrocket 1,500% what it was, that still would leave you saving roughly $46 billion.
Inspired by Obama’s move for stricter background checks for firearms purchases, there would be licensed sellers of drugs and firearms. Similar to a liquor store, you must show valid ID proving you are 18 (because if you are an adult in charge of your own decision and can be drafted why can’t you drink?). Where this differs to a liquor store is that they would swipe your ID and it would bring up your background which would consist of essentially two things: whether you have been convicted of a violent crime and your mental health record. If you are deemed by a licensed doctor not suitable for recreational drugs or firearms use, or are convicted of a violent crime it would be shown to the clerk in a yes/no way, or more likely red/green. This way your privacy is kept. If you are denied access to drugs or guns, you may appeal this in their own courts, and they will decide whether to reinstate this right.
I do whole-heartedly agree that addictive drugs such as heroin, cocaine (not the coca leaf), methamphetamine, and even alcohol & cigarettes are major public health problems, but even they should be sold in the shops, because there is no other way to keep the money out of the hand of the violent cartels and gangs. This is where you need to take a portion of that $46 billion left and spend it on HONEST education about the use of these drugs and their ill side effects. I would have a big smile on my face the day the legal maker of heroin or meth or coke goes bankrupt due to lack of demand. That is how you wage a war on DRUGS instead of our current war on DRUG USERS.

Drugs should be legalized but this will never happen because the government would have to admit that they are wrong. Prescription ketamine should be used for depression and MDMA for PTSD especially with all of the war veterans coming home completely shell-shocked.
