I ordered from a seller and he said he will send me a tracking number. To me that leaves a trail back to him. He has good feedback. This is my first order, what are the thoughts on using tracking numbers?

That depend is it dispatched within US or country. I am seller (methadone) and at first offered shipping with "faster" courier. But for me that is somehow unnecessary.
I must go in post with parcel, fill all docs and sign them, pay 35$ and that it. I think that exposure is not worth a risk. Dont know how are things regulated on other places.
Of course, pack which is small size (like my product) can be safely shipped with ordinary letter.

This is shipped within the U.S.

Tracking numbers are a serious security risk. If one fed buys a package and gets a tracking number they have a pretty good handle on the entire batch of shipments putting not only the seller at risk but also all the other buyers in that batch.
GreenCo only gives out the tracking number to established wholesale buyers, and even then under specific circumstances. Sellers can track packages, they buyers can not. If you don't trust your seller, look for a new one.

With USPS, there is no "tracking number" other than with Express Mail.
You can have what could be called tracking but is not officially called tracking by USPS when mailing Priority Mail. With Priority, you get DCN. This is Delivery Confirmation Number. This is for the vendor, the customer does not need it.
With EITHER ONE, you do not have to go into a post office to mail this and get your tracking or DC number if you are mailing within the United States.
Go into the post office (even when closed), with gloves if you like, and grab a stack of delivery confirmation stickers (neon green), Priority Mail flat rate envelopes, Express Mail flat rate envelopes and Express Mail mailing label (it's a white and blue triple paper label that is also a sticker). These are all free of charge.
Now buy some Priority Mail $4.95 stamps next time the post office is open.
For Priority Mail: print out address labels, stick them on the envelope, put one $4.95 stamp on it where it says PLACE POSTAGE HERE. Then put a Delivery Confirmation sticker on the envelope, and put 70 cents worth of additional postage stamps at the top near the other stamp. 2 First Class stamps (worth = 88 cents) will be fine. Keep the DCN receipt that you tore off the sticker portion. Now put your item in the Priority Mail flate rate envelope and seal it up. It can now be dropped off in a blue collection box.
For Express Mail: write your addresses very neatly with a black pen on the Express Mail mailing label, and peel off the piece it is stuck to. Stick it on an Express Mail flat rate envelope. The back portion you peeled it off of will have your tracking number on it. Keep that. Now put four $4.95 stamps on the flat rate envelope where it says PLACE POSTAGE HERE. Now put your item in the Express Mail flate rate envelope and seal it up. It can now be dropped off in a blue collection box.
Make sure your mail piece does not weigh over 13 oz's or you cannot drop it off in a blue collection box.
THAT is how you ship with "tracking" without going into a post office when mailing your item. You're welcome.

I know this is old, but if someone can confirm this information that would be great.
What about DCN numbers on first class parcels? Can you simply put enough stamps on to equate to first class + 70 cents? I was told in the post office to put a DCN you must bring the parcel in to the post office or get click-n-ship

They may say that but as long as you have the correct postage its fine. I have gotten stamped packages from ebay with DCNs on them all the time. Its usually around 6 44 cent stamps.
