Title: GPGTools Help
Post by: happyroller1234 on February 06, 2012, 01:51 am
So I learned how to make a key, and how to import someone's key, but I don't understand how to send an encrypted message.  I also am confused about getting my public key.  Everyone else in Keychain Access has "pub" type, but mine is "sec".  And when I right-click and select "Open PGP: Insert My Key" it only lets me insert my private key.

Two main questions:
HOW DO I SEND AN ENCRYPTED MESSAGE?
HOW DO I RETRIEVE MY PUBLIC KEY?

I've read on the forums, but I'm still confused.  Somebody help?  :-\

I'm using a Mac.  And yes, I have read all of the other threads.  I'm only making my own thread because they didn't answer my questions.  I figured out how to send something encrypted.  Now I'm just confused about the private vs. public key.

- public / private key {public + private = key pair}
   - you will only have the other party's public key they keep both, and their private is private.

- you own created keys, yes you also have both but you ONLY EVER GIVE OUT THE PUBLIC portion.

- "Now I'm just confused about the private vs. public key"
   - public + private = key pair
   - you need your private key to decrypt messages sent to you by the 2nd party who encrypted the message with your public key.
   - if its someone else's pub key you imported into your keyring you will only have the public key part cos they have the private cos it belongs to them
   - hand out your public key for people to send you encrypted messages {when gpg/pgp msg recipient = you.}

- try r/click or Option or alt and click, to export your own key - DON'T EXPORT THE PRIVATE WITH IT, JUST THE PUBLIC
  otherwise try the menu items, there has to be an option to export..

does this not help:-
