Given the interest that a Linux based SecureVM has generated I would like to get an idea of what would be the most preferred linux distribution by the community. I am not trying to exclude buyers from this but this will most likely not be anywhere near as user friendly as the Windows XP based VM but will be more secure and more anonymous due to the nature of linux and more intended for vendors. If there are certain utilities you would like to see please let me know and I will look to find a lightweight portable utility to meet this need.
My Findings thus far have indicated that Ubuntu seems to be the most user friendly and tor friendly of the distributions I have used and what I am working on now. Liberte' while very interesting and secure seems to disappoint in the ease of use department and I realistically couldn't see a non tech/linux savvy user seeing it as being suitable so I'm looking for a balance. Primarily because the tools available for simple tasks are not common across multiple platforms and would thus cause a bit of a learning curve
I personally have the most experience with rpm based distributions so thats where I am most comfortable but if the demand is primarily for debian based distro's then thats fine, it just means I need to widen my linux skillset.
Currently I intend on having the following utilities pre-installed and configured:
Bitcoin Wallet
Mozilla + Torbutton
Thunderbird + Enigmail
Pidgin + OTR - Off The Record
GPA - GNU Privacy Assistant
Vidalia Bundle loaded at boot
Some form of whole disk encryption, LUKS most likely
In ubuntu PasswordSafe is available, if there is a recommendation for a password retention utility I'm very open to suggestions
I'm just getting started on this so there is a lot of room for change early on, please share your thoughts and concerns.
Thanks,
Looker
