Title: Newbie Question About Tor
Post by: gn0ssos on September 20, 2013, 12:45 pm
Ok, so at the risk of sounding like a total idiot, I have a question: Is it ok to access .com's and .org's (Clearnet sites, I believe it's called?) like Google on your Tor browser, or does this compromise your security? Thanks for any info.

The only thing that identifies you online is you IP address - its like a digital signiture that can be traced back to you through the details you gave to your ISP. Using a service like TOR (or better yet getting a VPN) scrambles your IP address and replaces it with a random one. In laymans terms- access what you like on TOR you can't (or shouldn't be able to!) be traced!

It is ok to access .com or other sites from TOR browser BUT!::

1. Never, ever activate scripts for those sites. You're going to loose some functionality but you wont compromise security.

2. Make sure not to use your ISP's DNS Servers. Try using google dns or open dns server.

3. Never, ever download files from tor network. Avoid PDF and DOC files at any cost!

Sure... but obviously don't be doing your online banking or log onto facebook etc.

That and don't go through sites that give you a warning like "This site is untrusted" blah blah blah... if I'm not correct, you could possibly be a victim of a man-in-the-middle if you do.
