Title: do i need a proxy? privoxy help.
Post by: substance on October 22, 2011, 01:52 am
hello i know people here use a proxy to stay safe. but my question is this. do i really need it? how important is it?

i downloaded privoxy and i think its set up with firefox. whenever i move webpages via firefox the symbol in the bottom right makes an animation, but the privoxy window never says anything. i tried setting it up with tor. i did the 8118 thing in the two ports, but i dont think it ever works right because when i go back to the box after moving webpages my proxy settings get erased like they didnt work.  also the privoxy icon doesnt animate via tor. how do i set this damn thing up? is there something easier i can use?

if i dont neccesarily need this than im gonna say screw it.

also on the tor website it told me to add some bridges? i added the ones it told me to, and now tor only connects sometimes, but rarely. i took away the bridge settings and it connected right away. after it connected i turned the bridge settings back on assuming itd keep me safer? sorry for all the random troubleshooting questions. i just want to make sure im safe.

You may want to check out the Tor Browser Bundle [ torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html ] which, I'm told, will speak directly to Tor without the need for a proxy such as Polipo or Privoxy.  As I understand, it's pre-configured to run as-is after installation.

If you decide to stick with Privoxy, you'll want to modify the config.txt file (in the same folder as the Privoxy installation).
Change the line:
  #  forward-socks5  /  127.0.0.1:9050  .
To:
  forward-socks5  /  127.0.0.1:9050  .

Privoxy came pre-configured that way when it was bundled with Tor.

When you launch the TOR browser bundle, it goes to a check page that says, "You are using TOR" - if everything works. If not, it says so. Use the latest version from the TOR project website.
