Title: Do I add my public pgp key to my listings so potential buyers can speak to me?
Post by: DMTelf on July 08, 2013, 09:37 am
I'm a bit confused as to my pgp and how its integrated into forum listings. It's all set up fine now, I have a working public key and have added a few people successfully and emailed them. Is you public key something you give a user not really on your listing description, or usually only after they have messaged you about your listed product in private messages?

Thanks!

Yes, you can post your public key in your listings. Then when someone sends a message to you they can use your public key to encrypt, and you use your private key to decrypt. It's a highly secure method of communicating, and keeps any potential prying eyes out of your business.

Yes, you should post it on your profile and may post it on every listing.

Awesome thanks for the info guys/gals, makes it a lot clearer.

Can you quickly check my first ever listing, and my profile description, to check I have no made any blithering mistakes?

Looks ok to me mate. Could be a bit more eloquently worded perhaps.

Also there are no listings for the samples you mention, that might be worth sorting out.

And people don't usually use pgp for general messages/chitchat but just for sensitive information like bulk inquiries or sending addresses etc

hope that is of some small help to you

Actually, anyone sending you an encrypted message uses your public key to encrypt, and you use your private key to decrypt.
The other way around, if you were to send a potential buyer a message, you use their public key to encrypt the message and they use their private key to decrypt the message again.
So both parties need eachother's public keys to be able to communicate securely.

public key: is public information and can be spread anywhere
private key: is private information and must be kept secret, preferably password protected and backups need to be kept on multiple devices.

Listing looks ok. "profile" is badly misspelled. Needs a few commas and a colon.

you asked...

Thanks for all the awesome advice. It has not gone unnoticed.

I should maybe point out that if you want a totally free sample of 3-meo-pcp, GHB or DMT, I am your man :D I wont even charge for the postage. I will have these listed in a few hours.

I you want to pgp me instead of message me on site then my public key is as follows:

PGP is a great way to keep sensitive information secure, however, it is not necessary for simple messages.  If a potential buyer has a question or comment, they can message you.  I trust Silk Road's encryption service as is for nonsensitive information.
DMTElf, PGP encryption is normally used for buyers to send you their address.  (Address, inlcuding name, is very sensitive information.)  Even then, it is not necessary to require PGP encryption for addresses.  It is your call there.  Also, welcome to the Road!

I instantly deleted the message one purchaser sent me with their address, as I figured it was sensitive information. That should be the norm, right?

And thanks again for the infoz.

Oh and that was after I sent it. I may be slightly retarded, but not fully :D

Many vendors say in their profile that they will cancel any orders placed without PGP encryption so that is perfectly fine to do. Just say that you are going to do so in your vendor's profile.

Hmm I tried to make another listing and got "we could not process your request" for the image, but it did go up with no image.

Any ideas?

(also when trying to attach a screen cap of the error it said "The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator.", but thats not really important)
