Title: Quick Question regarding PGP
Post by: mrlimpet on July 24, 2011, 12:38 am
If I get a new computer would there be anyway to move my PGP key from my old computer to my new one or do I have to generate a new one?

Your keys are stored on your PC. You can copy them from one PC to another, and back them up, hide them etc as needed.

On my version, they have a .pkr extension. Search, and you shall find!

Extension should be *.asc  (default) You can also export your private key as *.pgp or *.txt
All of them are plain text files. You can import a private key just as easily as a public key (on your new computer), so be careful about isolating and protecting the private block.

The Private Block is unique to the passphrase so be careful that you use the correct backup. If you change your passphrase  (as you should) the Private Blocks will be different for each change.*

*(The same Public Block can be decoded with all your matching Private Blocks, given the correct corresponding passphrase)
