Title: Encrypted USB running Tails & TOR
Post by: crossreference on April 25, 2013, 12:58 pm
Questions:

1. How do you burn the Tails .iso image straight to a USB flash drive?
2. Is there a better option than Tails (Ubuntu, Liberte, etc)?

I've managed to encrypt my flash drive with TrueCrypt as per scout's suggestion in some thread. He also advised flashing Tails to the encrypted USB and running TOR straight from the flash drive.

Well I've manged to get 2 out of 3 security suggestions done. My flash drive is encrypted and I run TOR straight from the encrypted flash drive, but I've not managed to figure out how to burn Tails to the flash drive. Every time I execute the Tails .iso file it only gives me the option to burn to a DVD-R, not USB.

Anyway, security knowledgeable and inclined to help people, please answer my questions and feel free to suggest any other better/further security measures worth taking. Thanks.

Can someone with the required post count post this up in the Security forum where I might get some contribution from my fellow SR community members?

Thanks.

How about I just answer it here.  Unless you already have TAILS on a flash drive then you need to burn it to a dvd first.  Boot up from the dvd and in the options on the top left click administrator I think it is and click clone to flash drive.  That simple.  TAILS has TOR built in already.  It's a hardened kernel and everything goes through TOR except the "unsafe browser".  Liberty is way less bloated (one third the size), you don't need to burn a dvd, and it's slightly more anonymous.  They are both good though.

You don't need to burn the iso to DVD, you could instead run the iso in a virtual machine, and plug the USB drive in, route the USB drive to the virtual machine , and then use the TAILS USB installer to install TAILS onto the USB drive. Works just the same and saves you a DVD. Though having a DVD is nice because it can't be tampered with after the fact.

Now if you wanted to also configure a persistent volume from a virtual machine, you'd need to do a bit more work. This kind of stuff is handy when your old laptop's DVD drive doesn't work anymore or simply don't have a DVD drive or burner
