Title: Backup Bitcoin Address in case SR shuts down
Post by: PowerLifter on May 11, 2012, 09:31 pm
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section.

The backup bitcoin address (under settings, which SR claims: "If for some reason Silk Road has to be shut down unexpectedly, the available bitcoins in your account will be sent here."). I'm trying to figure out what to set this to.

I'm thinking of not using any online/web-based service that could potentially go away or get compromised itself. Perhaps use my own Bitcoin utility (such as the Bitcoin application at http://bitcoin.org/) to generate an address manually myself through the utility. Then backup that wallet.dat somewhere very secure.

So in case SR goes down, my Bitcoins get sent to this address that I generated for which I have the wallet.dat to access. I could fire up a utility with my wallet and access my Bitcoins. And then get all creative to get them back to me through Mt Gox.

Thoughts?

My thought is just generate an address from your bitcoin wallet and put it in there.  Just don't lose that wallet.  That number will be good for as long as you have the wallet.dat file, if I'm not mistaken.  If you do lose the wallet (common, unfortunately), be sure to update the address with one from your new wallet.
