Title: Tor status page concern
Post by: bllybngthornton on August 11, 2013, 11:43 pm
I was browsing SR (on one tab) and the forums here(another tab) and had my tor check page open ( another tab) and hit refresh on the tor check page. I notice the IP address change and then says I am not using Tor. How often should the IP address change and how serious is this issue ?

Running newest tails on USB
javascript disabled

Your Tor client creates new circuits every 10 minutes, so your IP address should change every 10 minutes, although theoretically a new circuit could terminate at the same exit node.

The check page can sometimes be wrong. If it fails to query the database of exit nodes, then it will say you aren't using Tor, but if you are browsing hidden services, you are obviously using Tor, because there's no other way to access them.

I've had the same thing happen before. Nothing to worry about. If you want to play it safe, you can always restart Tor Browser or click New Identity and test again.
