Title: TAILS help
Post by: morphjow on July 01, 2013, 11:09 am
Hey guys!

I've read Fallkniven's excellent thread about TAILS and decided to give it a go. The part where I'm struggling is trying to boot into TAILS via the usb. My computer just starts into windows 7 like normal. When I try and enter BIOS via F8 I get the 'Windows Boot Manager' advanced options screen. No where on the screen is there anything about changing boot order etc. At the 'Windows Boot Manager' normal screen there is a list of possible OS to start but Windows 7 is the only one there. Am I even in the proper BIOS section I need to be or is the Windows Boot Manager blocking me from doing that? I've googled on the clear net several times but there isn't anything related to my specific problem.

Can anyone help? Thanks so much.

the F8 key gets you to WINDOWS boot options - you need to enter the BIOS before that. depending on the make and model of the PC it's usually F1, F2, F10 or Del, or some have the options to hit Enter to 'enable temporary boot device'. as soon as you turn the machine on it should have 'Hit XX key to enter startup options/BIOS' or something along those lines, usually just under the bios version or the corner of the screen. once in the proper bios you should have 'boot options' where you can choose what boots first - this is where you add your USB stick as the top boot option

Hope this helps! come back to me with the make and model of the PC if you like, i should be able to find which key you need to press to enter the bios

I concur...

As soon as you power on your PC, start tapping the function keys repeatedly (or DEL key). Do not hold them down continuously though, as this may cause a keyboard error...

Are you using a Mac or a PC? I can't tell from your first message.

OK, wasn't sure when I read "Windows Boot Manager" as I think that is also what the boot screen for a Mac says?

Like Duke said then, find out how to choose your boot media. Every computer is kind of different so you need to read your BIOS manual and find that out. If you can't even choose to boot to USB then you will have problems running Tails.

think you're thinking of holding the option key on a mac to get the boot camp thing up

Thanks you bloody legends! I got it all working and I'm in TAILS now. When I hit 100 posts you're both up for some nice +1s.
