Hello I am wondering about shipping via USPS and getting a DCN - do I have to go into the postal office and request this?
I'd much prefer to just drop an envelope into a postal box but then I couldn't get a DCN for protection against bad buyers.
So how can I do this privately?

You buy priority stamps and grab priority envelopes and DCN stickers from a post office. Then you just apply the correct postage and drop it in a blue box.

I didn't know there was something other than regular stamps, great idea!

Requirement for dcn sticker on non priority mail is a 3/4" inch thick first class parcel. The sorting machines for letters thinner than this do not have scanners for the dcn stickers so they would be useless.

Google "usps form 152" and look at the images. Next time you go into the P.O. grab a huge stack of them. Then you can use that sticker on any package that's thicker than 3/4" first class. Add 85c to postage.
This is the cheapest, most secure way to do it.
