Is Torchat reliable? I haven't tried it out yet.

In the end the reliability depends on the implementation I suppose. But from the theory behind it, it is based on the TOR concept and every client works as a hidden service. So whenever you talk to a "buddy" on your list, the standard TOR processes for accessing and communicating with a hidden service are used. So it should be as reliable as TOR itself is.

There was a discussion about the reliability / safety of TorChat going on the Tails ToDo page *clearnet-warning* https://tails.boum.org/todo/Torchat_installed_by_default/

From what I understand there, it should be rather safe, as it is open source, already around for about 5 year and there seems to be no known usable attack...

You're making yourself vulnerable when using torchat because you're running a hidden service.

Hi Jack,
thank you for your insight! I did some more reading and you are right, running a hidden service is probably not such a good idea, if you don't know exactly what you are doing...
So do you have a suggestion for a anonymous IM or chat service instead of TorChat?

I personally like jabber/aim/icq using OTR over TOR.  Simple and effective.

And if you are using Mac, the Adium chat program also supported OTR encryption. Also Trillian for PC.
