Each decade has it's own unique defining drug culture, here's my breakdown of each decades definitive drugs:
50's - Amphetamines
60's - LSD
70's - Cocaine and Marijuana
80's - Cocaine and Crack Cocaine
90's - Ecstasy and Heroin
00's - Mephedrone, Crystal Methamphetamine, Ketamine, Prescription Meds (legal highs too?)
Feel free to debate the above.
My question to the forum is: 'What in your opinion is THE definitive drug of our generation?' The drug that's consistently making the headlines, has it's risks blown out of proportion, has it's own youth culture backing it, is cheap, plentiful, and easy to acquire? Discuss :)

Bath Salts. ;)
-
Prescriptions hands down. Even though, I am not a big fan of them.
-
Legal Highs. Also I think MDMA as it's been in the media quite a bit recently.
-
the 00s definitely perscription drugs.
this decade RCs for sure. Everyone is hearing about them now and its being blown wildly out of proportion
-
Perhaps it's none but it's all about choice now?
-
DMT....because Soulja Boy did a rap about it...
-
Bath Salts. ;)

MDMA is the drug that defines our generation, just like LSD defined the 60's...now we don't have that many 'deadheads', we have 'BASSheads'! Look at these electronic music festivals and the attendance that's only growing every year, and I bet that at least 75% of the people, if not more, are under the influence of some sort of Ecstasy product (whether it be pure molly or some sort of XTC bop)

Most Definitely MDMA. I know too many kids from High school who have completely fried themselves on it from drastic over use

I agree.

Skunk and MDMA

Skunk, 2c-b and 25i-NBOMe.

I would say DMT is the new thing. I have friends that have never even done psychedelics that want to try DMT, and I think they're out of their fucking minds.
I've never tried it myself but I had the opportunity once, but it was just bad timing (busy week, lots of assignments/tests to worry about)... I want to be in a good state of mind when I try it.
I just think it's bizarre that people who have never experienced psychedelics at all want to blast off like it's something trivial. Maybe I'm the one overthinking it?
-
Research chemicals. Hands down. Mark my words. Give it a few years we will all have new, unscheduled benzos, painkillers and stimulants to experiment with.
and we dont now? Just because they are not widely available (YET) does not mean they do not exist.
Highly potent synthetic opiates, active in the ug's already exist! However what bio chemist in their correct state of mind wants to be resposabe for unleashing that
In my opinion, Limitless is totally spot on, 'Choice' is the drug of this generation

actually to contribute to this thread rather than quoting someone i'm going to add jenkem

Same here. Some of my friends who know that I'm into psychedelics asked me if I could get them DMT. WTF?! What's with the sudden surge in the popularity of DMT?

Jenkem was a hoax.

i am well aware of that :p

My vote would be research chemicals as their numbers are getting to a point where their hard to ignore.
-
I don't think this decade gets a drug yet.
We're not far enough out of the 00's yet recognize the lasting cultural shift that took place during this decade.
-
Perhaps it's none but it's all about choice now?
Agreed but I do feel like MDMA / "Ecstasy" (Such a god awful term. I agree with Alexander Shulgin on how MDMA should only be called its chemical name and not a made up selling scheme) are a large part of modern day society with everyone around me using it like nuerotoxicity is nonexistent.
I really hope our generation learns how to respect drugs...
-
Choice, and research chems are cool and all but hardly representative of a generation. Certainly not like LSD in the 60s or Cocaine in the 80s. Silk Road and 2CB is hardly mainstream.
I agree with the others saying MDMA. I'd say Ecstasy for the 90s (pills) and MDMA for the 00's. Or at least in the last couple of years, MDMA crystals have become the norm.
Hugely popular .. not just in the "dance" scene, but all different groups.
-
By choice I meant that I don't think anything defines the generation now because people are just too diverse now. It's more that everyone is on it and they are on everything for every kind of reason you can think of and so choice is what defines us maybe?
-
I kinda agree with those here who say it's about the choices we have now.
One thing that seems true to me though, we seem to be converging onto the theme of love once again. Not since the mid 1960's have we been on the crest of such a monumental shift. The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world. They predicted a paradigm shift. I have a feeling that we are headed there and psychedelics in particular are pointing us in the right direction. As with all times, this is an exciting time to be alive :D
-

I like the way you think.
This decade is all about WHATEVER you want your choice to be.

I Disagree. You think there wasn't any choice back then either?
I believe that whichever drug culture (there are several) ends up making the longest-lasting impact on society in the 00's will end up being the poster child for the drugs taken during that time. We haven't traveled far enough into the future yet to recognize which changes will take their place in the history book and which will not. Only time will tell...
-
spice and bath salts fasho.
despite how gnarly they are.
synthetics have become very popular.
-
this is a good topic. from my perspective in the US i'd say it breaks down like this:
90s = crystal meth and rolls
2000-2010 = "molly", chronic weed, and Rx drugs, especially alprazolam (xanax) and oxycodone (roxis and OCs)
my vote would probably be on the last one for the 00s
2010-2020 = "research chemicals" and ever more exotic cannabis preparations and specialized methods of consuming thc (oils, waxs, extracts and beyond)
-
I Disagree. You think there wasn't any choice back then either?
Heh true, cocaine and heroin were legal once!
In a way, RCs, synths and analogs are consequence of having less choice, not more.
-
When i started it was all about the weed personally. But E's were huge here. I remember they were going as cheap as £0.50 for a spell!
2000-2010 = MDMA + SOAPBAR (still looking for the fucker who did this to us stoners, fake nasty shit whos creator should be forcefed a bar, straight down his fucking throat)
2010-????? = Monkey madness (what a stupid fucking name for a drug :o)
Definitely all about the research chems now no matter how much i hate them. Bath salts and legal highs almost destroyed my town. And to think grass is still illegal. Salvia was ok i guess but that would be it, not a recreational drug by any means. LSA from woodrose seeds i think it was, was ok i guess also.
Alcohol of caffeine could be contenders but theyre no fun compared to the others out there
