Title: Simple PGP client
Post by: richporter on May 20, 2013, 05:23 pm
Hello,

I'm keen to use PGP to encrypt all communications either sent within SR or to/from tormail addresses but I dont really want to have to bother with installing an email client like thunderbird on my computer and another program that will encrypt emails via this client and learn how to use the latter to do so. So far in my forays into SR I've been using this web-based tool - https://www.igolder.com/pgp/encryption/ and the associated tools in the top right of the page to do my encrypting/decrypting but I'd rather have something like this as a desktop client. Does anyone know of something simple I can use to encrypt/decrypt text in this way actually on my PC? I know this should probably be in the newbie PGP club discussion but I couldnt find a suitable place to put it.

Thanks,

Hmm If I understand your just looking for a program like portable pgp?  So you can encrypt and decrypt?

Your post is a bit confusing..

OK sorry if i havent been clear.

Basically this web-based tool can encrypt/decrypt simple text  - https://www.igolder.com/pgp/encryption/

Only I'd rather not do my encrypting/decrypting on a 3rd party site, whatever their claims to ignorance are, and would like to have a (similarly simple) program on my desktop that can perform these functions/work in the same way as the online tool

Got it, you mentioned emails and such so I was thinking you wanted something that would auto encrypt/decrypt your emails so okay..

What OS are you using?

portable pgp i think is simplest for windows as there is a download that comes with everything you need, java etc. I don't like it much but it does work.

http://ppgp.sourceforge.net/

get the portable option that one comes with all dependencies

Personally I use GNU Privacy Guard but on a debian distro of linux I forget what tails uses but I like that one too.

http://www.gnupg.org/

GNU lets me paste in a public key, open any doc with info, I can file encrypt the info right inside the doc file then I copy and paste for order.  No other PGP was quicker or simpler

You can also check gpg4usb, I learned about it here, and it's portable and very convenient. You can keep it in a usb stick so no keys will be stored in your comp, that's an added security.
