Title: PGP installation is torrid . Help needed!!
Post by: windblown on July 05, 2012, 01:17 am
I have spent 3 days trying to get PGP to work on my Windows XP SP3 !!!!  :(   Firstly I downloaded GPG4win only to find Kleopatra (as indicated in the instructions) would not load!! Hungry Ghost, thanks again, advised me to forego that rubbish and use GPA. I did and managed to generate a private and public pair using this this, though I could find no guide on it. Then I could not understand how to implement the decryption. Encryption is fine as I attached Public key in a file and sent to Adele. How to decrypt???!!! Downloaded Thunderbird, installed Enigmail and tried to link this to GPG4win. Every step of the process - up pops the GPG4win installer again. Enigmail did not want to know about GPG4win.  Do I have to install Microsoft Outlook to inplement GPGOL.
Is there an easy way to do this? Oddly enough, I am not a complete muppet ;D I've been to school and I have been known to follow reasonably complex concepts but this guff has me on the floor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Yep I did recommend GPG4USB. I'm fairly new to this myself and pretty much went through the process you are undergoing.
Don't bother with thunderbird or trying to link with outlook or anything like that. You don't want these mail organising program's storing your messages unbeknownst to you!

GPG4USB is a stand alone program. You just open the folder and click "start windows" in your case and up will pop a GUI very similar to GPA but even simpler.

To decrypt a message just copy paste it into the window and hit decrypt. It will ask for your pass phrase
which you created when you made your key pair.

If you made your keypair in GPA already it would be simplest just to create a new one! However if you have a message that's encrypted with that key you CAN export your secret key. Open GPA. Select your key from the list and right click on it. A box with two options appears. I'm away from my computer do I can't remember but it's something like " key information" you select. If its the right one a large box of text about your key pair will appear. At the bottom will be option to "export private key" with lots of warnings to be careful. Do it asnd save the file. You should delete it later.
Now open GPG4USB. Select import key and choose "from file" or whatever. Browse to wherever you saved key file. This should now import your key pair.

Sounds complicated? It really isn't. Just have a play with GPG4USB you'll soon get head round it. You don't need anything else. Just use clipboard for everything for now. Import keys by copy pasting. Export your public key to clipboard to send it someone. Encrypt a message to someone then just copy paste it where you need it. And so on.

Honestly when I first started I tried all the same stuff trying to get thunderbird set up asnd everything. It's all unnessacary( I can't spell that word for some reason). GPG4USB is simple and does it all.  In a day or two you'll look back and think its really straightforward.

Hope I don't seem patronising mate... Not my intention. GPG is one of those things seems like a nightmare at first but simple once mastered. I reckon most people here went through a similar process of learning. Also please note I am by no means an expert and any advice I give may be used for any purpose commercial or non commercial with no guarentee warranty or responsibility and may be passed on changed or unchanged for whatever purpose as long as these same rights are passed on to the recipient etc.

I'm DOOMED I'm afraid , folks. Thanks for your forebearance again Hungry Ghost. Thanks Shannon but your link is to the GPG4usb page as pointed out by HG.
Anyway:
Downloaded GPG4usb onto stick , unpacked and created my key pair no problem. Decided I would use adele@gnupp.de for test.  Pasted my Public key into an .asc file and attached it to an email to Adele. Back came reply from Adele encrypted by, presumeably, my public key. Copied the encrypted text into GPS4USB text file, made sure my key pair was clicked on, and tried DE-CRYPT.
Got error message box: "Decryption failed. No secret key. No private key with ID*********** present in keyring"
Reformated usb stick and reinstalled GPG4USB.  Tested with Adele again. Same thing.

http://gpg4usb.cpunk.de/download.html page says " Under some very rare circumstances, your keyring on the usb-pendrive can be damaged - please keep a copy of it on a save place. We're working on a solution for that. If you have any problems or find bugs in this software, please let us know"

I will try again on another USB stick.
Will keep you updated :D

Cheers and thanks again

Hmmm... Sounds like you did everything right, but the error message sounds like you don't have the right private key. Ie: message is not encrypted to you. Not sure what is going wrong. If you like to post your public key on this forum just as text. ( forgetting about .asc for a moment lets keep simple as possible) I can import it via c/p and reply in this forum with a message encrypted to you, which you can c/p back into your GPG. See if that works. If you want to try this experiment go ahead. Obviously there's no danger in posting your public key, although afterwards you might want to create new keypair.

Just a further piece of info. Right clicking on my keypair brings up an option to Export Private Key. I just exported it into the GPG4USB folder on the usb stick and there it is, bold as brass as a .asc file  ???

It's worth knowing that if you copy and paste either key or message you can include surrounding text you don't need to be that accurate. It will just read from "begin pgp message" to "end" as long as you include those bits.
