I think it's the pretty obvious meaning. Now that he's lived his life being screwed over and is facing the end of his life, which he's never had to face before, he's no longer limited. He is free to do exactly what he wants, on impulse. (i.e. rich dick driving convertible, causes the fire under the hood and walks away because he's no longer the chemistry teacher shining the rims of his asshole high school students).

He is "awake" to all the possibilities that have never been open to him before, considering going into the drug trade - truly making something out of his seemingly wasted time researching and teaching chemistry.
