Title: 2012 13" Apple MacBook Air 1.7 Ghz i5 4GB/120GB SSD/MD628LL/A 10.8 Mountain Lion
Post by: Thetruthseeker1234 on July 22, 2013, 08:19 pm
So what is the most secure way I can set up:
2012 13" Apple MacBook Air 1.7 Ghz i5 4GB/120GB SSD/MD628LL/A
10.8 Mountain Lion

Someone help me please, I am about to purchase a vendor account and start selling some crucial products on the road.
I happen to be under a good amount of heat and I want both no chance of my customers ever being in jeopardy or myself. On the day the police bust in and confiscate my laptop, I want to be 100% sure they will have no way of getting in/accessing the information on it.

I can offer 100 tabs of tyl3r durdens legendary 1200ug 25i tabs as payment to whoever helps me. Or I can offer 5$. Your choice.
Free help is also always appreciated.
Thanks all

My advice to you would be to ditch MacOS in favor of Tails.

However, you will probably have a hard time installing Tails on you MacBook Air, as it doesn't have a CD drive, and Macs don't like booting anything thats not MacOS from USB drives.

I'd recommend using a different machine to vend on SR (sorry. I love my Mac too, its not not the best tool for SR purposes). Maybe you can pick up a cheap laptop on craigslist or at a pawnshop?

I keep hearing this from people.

In that case what is the best model computer for full protection in the ways I asked.

I use a mac for all my regular internet use, but for SR I boot through an old 2008 handdowned sony laptop. It works like a charm for SR purposes. I have tried to boot on my mac, but is just a pain in the ass and tails would not boot.

I reccomend looking at a newer version Toshiba or something of that likes. My friend got a new $400 toshiba and it works just as good as my 4 figure macbook.

You can probably find a used toshiba, just like new for $200. I would look into that and then post the version you are looking at in here.

As far as the internet anonymity stuff, I am in the same boat. So I will be subscribing and looking at what happens.

I don't know anything at all about any computer other than apple products.
Can you give me examples of models?

I would run tails, not truecrypt. I run tails and I am not computer savy, I am just the same as you.

Look at a used computer dealer around your area or even eBay. Figure out how much it cost and come back here with the model and all and we will give you a good to go.

You should be able to find a good used computer on eBay. Look at a couple and search for their reviews to find the best value. I would get a Toshiba.

Your call

Really any PC will do. One is not more secure than another. When you are running Tails they are all equally secure. I think the only consideration you will have is the RAM. You will need a descent amount, as Tails stores a lot of info in RAM. I'm not sure exactly how much RAM you will need, but I'll guess that info is readily available.

I would just get the cheapest possible machine with at least the required amount of RAM. And go ahead and pick up a USB stick while you're at it (at least 2GB) so you can set up a persistent drive. There's a great Tutorial by Fallkniven on how to do this.

Will tails work with this model?

Toshiba Satellie C655 (8GB RAM, 285 GB HD, 2.10GHz, Intel Core i3, Windows 7)

Also what other encryption/ security measures can I take for my computer? I need to be way over protected. If the police bust in, there needs to be no chance of them ever breaking into my machine.

Someone was telling me I should also run tor through a VPN. If someone can tell me what that means that would be great. I have no idea what a VPN is.

First you have to know, that every big computer company (hp, dell, lenovo, toshiba...) is selling notebooks in a consumer line and in a business line.
You should buy a notebook from a business line!

Advantages:

- BIOS security features in business models are more present, than in consumer line notebooks.
Example for BIOS features, which often lack in consumer line notebooks: It should be possible to disable Firewire, eSATA, Thunderbolt, setting of HDD, BIOS & boot passwords.

- They mostly got better linux hardware support, because nerds don't like to use rubbish notebooks with bad screen/keyboard)

I would recommend you the good old Dell Latitude D630 (14", go for the one with intel graphic) or maybe the smaller model D430 (12").  (buy second hand, pay by cash)
Both are cheap to get, indestructible and you can put in a integrated UMTS modem, if you like to use anonym prepaid sim cards for the internet connection.
Or go for a Lenovo X60?!

Here some mac tips:

- don't install warez

- use Firefox with add-ons like no-script, https-everywhere, better privacy and so on. Also deactivate Firefoxs tracking & statistic options.

- don't install adobe flash, uninstall java (Maybe use Chromium (integrated flash player) for amusement flash stuff)

- set up filevault 2 with a strong password and don't send the recovery key to apple (they will ask)

- boot from the installer dvd or usb stick and set up a (also strong) firmware password.

- install little snitch

- "disable location services", "contacts" and "diagostic and usage" in "system preferences"

- create a 2GB truecrypt container with a strong password (but not the same pw as in your new "vendor notebook")
and put stuff like the tor bundle in there (in case you got the urge to read the forum from your mac sometimes, maybe create also a new extra forum user account too, but NEVER store customer data)

Alternative: install Debian or Ubuntu (maybe easier)

Another person speaking Chinese.

Only now do I fully understand how technologically retarded I am.

Anyone want to explain to me or give me the link to explanations on any of this.

Ill still pay with what I had said if anyone can fully explain it to me. Imagine your explaining to a fucking idiot.

Yes the Toshiba will work.

Here are the system requirements to run Tails:

Thanks tempo,
I think I'm going with:

http://www.dell.com/us/dfb/p/latitude-d630/pd

I found one mad cheap with 4gb ram, windows 7 pro, and a bunch of extras thrown in.

So then, can someone help me out with setting up this machine for maximum security? I would be happy to send out a 100 tab sheet of tyl3r durdens 25i 1200ug tabs, as payment for the help.
It would probably also be easier for the person to step me through it over torchat.
Anyone who's interested PM me.

I can have you set up with tails in mac... no problem. I use it. I run 10.8 as well. It's quite easy. The only thing is if you want persistence you're going to need.... 2 *gasp* usb drives. One with persistence, one to boot. Quite easy. Want the help?

Holy shit dude. Your a life saver if you can help me with this. Would you also be able to help me secure my computer in any other ways?
If you could help me to set up everything needed for security for my vendor account also I would be in debt to you.

I would also be willing to pay you if you helped me to set everything up. We could negotiate a price. Or of coarse I could send you some product free of charge. I will be selling the worlds finest MDMA pills and coke, domestically in the United States. If any of that interests you please drop me a line.

Thanks

Is it wise to post so much info about your computer if you're under heat and plan on committing more crimes. Don't mean to be a dick just my thoughts.

First off, I don't own this computer yet.
Second off, the idea of having a secure computer is that they won't be able to get in it when they come for me, so why would it matter if anyone knows what kind of comp I use?
Third, my vendor account will not be under the same name as this account obviously, so it won't matter either way.

Do you know how many millions of computers are purchased each day? I doubt they will be able to connect my one purchase anyway.
For example, if someone on here says they are about to go to a certain festival, is that a security risk? Obviously no, because there are a large number of other people who would also be there, making it impossible to know who the person is.

To do this you're going to want a 2 USB sticks and a PC. Load tails onto the first USB using the PC(http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/). Then when you start your mac hold down the option key, or download an RFID(it's what selects what to boot, your mac os, or tails) or it's called something like that. I'm not sure.

Now you have tails on your mac. To get persistence use the USB installer in TAILS to install the next one with persistence. A USB with persistence won't boot on a mac so you need to use both to boot with persistence.

Keep us updated, @Thetruthseeker1234. I'm curious to see if you are able to get Tails up and running (w Persistent Drive) on your Macbook.

I was not able to get my Macbook to boot from the USB drive no matter what I tried. I'm always interested in others' success stories, though

This is the issue.
I want the MacBook so bad, but I'm very afraid that I won't be able to set it up securely.
Then I'm out over 800$

I will probably buy the MacBook try and set it up, and if it doesn't work, ill return it.

I'm sure it would get mentioned by all of SR just like fallkniven did.
It would definitely be a crucial thread.
