Title: SHipping questions, is this a good idea?
Post by: wtflolwtf on August 26, 2013, 12:01 am
this thread was started for something else but i decided to change the topic because i have other questions and didnt want to post a new thread.

But if you use a fake name can't you use the "But it's not addressed to me" defence?
You understand where i'm coming from lol.

Use your real name, unless your OK with your order going missing. Delivery of First Class mail to an old resident is not the same as Priority Mail or a package. As far as PGP goes, it's not required by most but totally worth the 30 minutes to learn it and protect yourself.
What do you mean the order will go missing? i order through domestic mail, i still receive the old tenants mail more than i get my own.

By the way i'm going to stop being a lazy ass and set up PGP, but thoughts on the quotes above?

Some vendors require it, but there are other methods to communicating.

The top 3 are:
Plain text
PGP
Privnote

I personally recommend PGP, from what I can tell it's the most secure of the 3 options.

Generally speaking PGP is mainly used for sensitive information you'd rather not have just out in the open, IE: any information that would lead back to you (address, phone number, etc.)

Lets say SWIM uses the name of a previous tenant that isnt under the current tenants house?
and SWIM receives their mail all the time anyway.

You should learn PGP OP :) It is for your own safety and vendors will favor you if you take security seriously..

I haven't made my first purchase yet, but my plan was to send it under a fake name (for which I've set up a mobile phone number and email address (Hotmail)) and send it to a friends address (who has agreed to this).

They live at a rental property and if it's under a fake name this shouldn't put my friend at risk, especially if they keep the package there for a few days just in case they're raided or questioned by LE (which is unlikely because I plan to encrypt the name and address) - they could just claim that they were going to give it back to the post office because it's not in their name/it could be a previous addressee of the rental property.

My point is, your mailman will probably have no issue dropping 1st class mail (normal letters) in your mailbox that he may or may not know are for a previous resident, but a priority mail envelope or package could make them look into it more. Probably unlikely, but just something to consider.
