Suppose you wanted to move to the best country in the world to do drugs for recreation?
Which country would you pick and why?
I've been eyeballing the Netherlands for a long time. The good drugs seem to be shipped from there, reefer in coffeeshops, OTC shrooms...
I may make the move as soon I can score a Bachelors and meet their immigration requirements.
Any other good choices I should consider?

Portugal has very lax drug laws. They do heroin in the middle of the streets and I was offered to buy coke by 2 different people in my hotel in Lisbon. Apparently if you're caught with a small amount then your drugs are confiscated and you have to go talk to a drug counselor of sorts, maybe a small fine, but the counselors are more concerned about if your safely using than the fact your using since HIV is at incredibly high rates in the country.
-
That's the only decent choice I know of, and from what I hear they are starting to pass retarded laws over there too.
I can't believe we are in the 21st century and there is still not a single country in the world with a logical approach to the drug problem. (Recognizing that it isn't a problem)

If I moved to the Netherlands, drugs would be the last of my problems. Window shopping for prostitutes is something I could easily become addicted to. It's a 'hobby' for me now, with the advent of review sites like TER (TheEroticReview) but being able to view the wares beforehand... Yea, I'm not sure if I'd be able to afford drugs at that point.

What about spain? They also offer you drugs on a platter. And they have a huge night-life scene. Its also the major route for a lot of drugs.
-
I would say British Colombia, Lisbon or Amsterdam. I am guessing your life does not revolve around drugs so find a place that you like for more than drugs.

Czech republic has essentially legalized personal use amounts of all drugs

That's a good point. I suppose I should consider standard of living. Anybody know what life is like in these countries? Why british columbia?
I think I would like to master a second language. Lot's of people dieing of aids in portugal? That doesn't sound very nice...
Spain warrants further investigation. czech republic... other than physical location, I don't know much about that country. Would it be unfair of me to assume that's not a great standard of living on the basis of geography?
Cmon people. Sell me your homelands.
I don't think I would fare well in a conservative culture, like in the far east. And I don't want to live in a country with a lot more men than women.

What ever you do, don't come to the fucking United States. Unless you live there now, then, in that case, good idea on the whole leaving thing.
-
If you live in the USA moving to Canada would be easy, no culture shock or anything. Van city is really lib when it comes to drugs, most canadian vendors are from their and its really easy to get anything just take a walk through hastings and weed is really cheap, a day of searching and you can find high quality bc bud for 200/ounce.
Moving to europe would be difficult work wise considering English is usually not the first language in a lot of lines of work. If your in Business type stuff you will be fine but say you work at a factory or something not speaking the native language could be a problem.

Ya Stevey, I'm an American.

I accept the challenge of mastering a new language of some kind.
Also, most of the good countries won't let you immigrate without a bachelor's anyway, so that's plenty of time to practice on livemocha.com after deciding where to take off to.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that language is would be a major issue in Spain. You'll have to learn Spanish, very few people speak ANY English, you'll even struggle just to pay for your train ticket, when the operator tells you how much you have to pay...
-
I know some french already, anyone in French speaking Canada care to comment on what it's like for a drug user in those parts?
-
Why would you wanna live in Quebec? If your thinking of moving to canada I would move to BC or Alberta or Ontario. The french that french canadians speak isn't really french, it's haggered half assed french :p

I'm actually asking if I would wanna? I take it your answer to that is no?

I can confirm this. Not even bank desk lady or a doctor spoke much if any English. Its much like in Latin America although its in Europe.(In regards of English speaking skills) Weird. Spanish isnt that hard though.

Montreal is an awesome city. But it gets fucking COLD.
The rest of the province? I'd pass. Unless you consider the Roman Catholic religion to have an easy-going stance on drugs. Or anything.

I think it depends on what kind of drugs you like. India and parts of south east asia can be great for hash/weed/pharms/opium whereas you'll get the biggest selection in Holland. 1-2 KW weed growing in the Czech Republic is no longer a criminal offense but other drugs of any quality are hard to find. Holland is much more pricey compared to India/Asia, it is also quite a strange culture to get used to compared to other European countries. Dutch vulture is not really the kind of culture a foreign recreational drug user would be attracted to (unless you stay firmly in the cosmopolitan Amsterdam scene, which can get annoying). Portugal/Spain are in very serious financial straits and this effects the general mood a lot.

Does anyone have more experiences looking for opium/opiates in South East Asia/India? I'm considering a trip once I finish school (=university, I'm not a kid lol) anyway but is is not difficult to find anything if you don't know any locals?

There are areas in India where weed/opium is legally sold in government 'bhang' shops (such as Puri and Varanasi/Banares in the east). Any major city will also have plenty of street dealers. Or take a bus/train/jeep up north from Delhi into the Himalaya towns and there will be plenty there as well. The government shops could be a good starting place at least, although the quality from such outlets is never particularly good...loitering around the shops however maybe some interesting characters who have better wares to offer you. You can buy great little weed bonbons from these shops as well but be careful with the bhang lassi (weed yoghurt drink), last time I drank one in a restaurant in Varanasi I had to go back to my hotel and literally hide under the covers. Way too strong for unsuspecting me.

I've never been to India, so that ^ sounds very interesting. Wish I could afford it like right NOW, but oh well, I'm busy anyway... still I'm so jealous, you seem to have had quite an experience :o

A friend of mine from India recently got his US visa that he had been waiting on forever.
When we were in college he described his home city as a poor, festering shit-hole of filth. I'm really super happy he got his wish of being able to live here.
After talking to him about India, I don't think I could ever see myself moving there.

India is a hugely diverse place. I don't blame Indians for wanting to live in the west but the truth is India is starting to shine and America/EU are starting to really suffer. An expat in India can easily find nice places to live with good infrastructure and a booming economy. Of course life at the lower end is still tough.
