Title: /!\ To all newbies (and some oldtimers) : About Usernames /!\
Post by: Leitan on July 10, 2013, 08:57 am
Hi everyone,

Today for the fourth time in a month i had to send a message to an user, because simply googling his username linked to a Google+ account with location and pictures.

DO NOT USE YOUR REGULAR PSEUDONYM ON A HIDDEN SERVICE.

It takes 15 secs to 5 minutes to link it to your regular identity for any LEO.

Don't use either a name linkable to any of your close friends, relatives, old schoolmates..

You can find plenty of names that are vague enough not to give any information on your person/location yet unique enough you could remember it !

Take care,
Leitan

Alternatively... on the TOR services and the Silk Road, use the username of an Internet forum enemy or troll.

I think enemies too are easily linkable to you by LEO, unless you plan to choose Kim-Jong-Un or The_Jew_People as a nickname

Just choose a username which exists no where else for you in the real world. I use this only here, and as for the name itself well lots of people drink it!

Personally I took a baby name list and took the first that I never crossed in real life that did sound great :)

You make me wish I'd picked ZOG as my username.

This is a great tip! When I registered here I wracked my brain for a while trying to come up with a name that wasn't connected to my other online personalities and found the process annoying, hence my choice being snark :D

Good advice when it comes to choosing monikers for the SR & TOR. I thought along the same lines when I created mine.

I just tried to come up with something unique & clever. RustyKoin, get it? You know, like, old money...    8)   :P

I was going to use it as a stage name to start my rapping career but I guess it would be a bad idea now. Oh well!

Going off to go Google my alias...

If you get stuck, just grab a line from a David Bowie song.

Hm that's a good point. So for example using your first and middle initials and last name would probably be a bad idea?

I wanted something short, and I like the number seven, so I figured two of 'em is twice as nice.

Wait so I wasn't supposed to use my birth name when signing up for Silk Road?!? Oh boy..

The people who don't know this will serve as examples for the rest of us.

At least you made me laugh ! :)

Just think it this way : if your local LEO monitors this forum, they're googleing every username they find to try to grab someone in their jurisdiction.
You DON'T WANT to be this guy.

Good advice!

But also breathtakingly stupid of someone to use their ordinary pseudonym.

I feel kind of OK with mine, there's a lot of people watching HIMYM :)

Fun fact: I googled Bungee54 and only found a photo album with 54 pictures of someones bungee jump  ;D

with 50 posts you can post everywhere on the forum and with 100 posts you can +/- people. (the best part is that there is no captcha once you got your 100 full)

Darwin studied this, I think its called "survival of the fittest," in this situation regarded to as "elimination of the stupid."

DO NOT USE YOUR REGULAR PSEUDONYM ON A HIDDEN SERVICE.

Oh that's so cool for the captcha part ! I'm SO TIRED of writing those damn random letters... at least SR main site's captcha may get interesting as it derives from real words and so from time to time shows something funny, but captcha even for sending PMs.. I understand the problem of spammers but this half solution is way too heavy for a legitimate poster while not strong enough to discourage spammers from doing it manually..

Your mention of Darwin and "elimination of the stupid" reminds me the first 2013 Darwin Award nominee :

(5 Feb 2013, São Paulo, Brazil) Mechanic Sérgio A. Rosa, 49, was welding a gas tanker that, curiously, exploded, sending his remains flying 400 meters through the air.

Some aren't build to resist..

Read the FAQ (http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/wiki/index.php?title=Frequently_Asked_Questions) : The only way to change your username is to create a new account.

Still, I wonder if you can request an old account deletion..

Hehe, same for me. Yet it seems that common sense is pretty unfairly distributed these days...

can't help but totally agree with you both here.  I'm not sure if it's paranoia in my case (as far as that I've never wanted to connect any of my accounts since before I even started using TOR)..  it's just a thing for me of that my business is mine and I've no desire to share it with the public at large.  I don't have any social media accounts - well, except for a YouTube account that I got long before Google got their +1 privacy invasion.  Even prior to that though, my You Tube account name has nothing in common with my gmail name - neither account I use much anymore anyway, and neither is even close to my name here.

Out of curiosity, I think I'll google my SR username...  maybe at some time in the future since I bet this post has caused a flurry of people googling their SR names right now.  But since I picked the word part of the name at total random - means nothing to me or any of my interests, and I picked the numbers - 3 of them so that they can't be guessed to be a date of birth unless I was born in either 1904 or 2004... both highly unlikely, or I was born on June 24.... which I wasn't born either close to that date or the extreme opposite either...  so, let them try and try to connect any dots and random words and numbers with no personal meanings afaik lead nowhere.....

Nice and highly symbolic : from the "seventy seven virgins" of the Quran to the "not seven or seventy, but seventy seven times seven", this number symbolizes the multitudes. Besides, it's a sum of squares : 6²+5²+4² 8)

Numbers make me purr.

This topic should be stickied,I didn't notice if it had been already. It did give me a chill,  and made me check my username. Not many find the thought of shit sandwiches appetizing or appealing, but taste is in the mouth of the consumer.

As for common sense, it is neither common nor cheap.

Ha ha, I have to admit that when I created my account, my instinct was to use the same old user name I use for everything.  No way would I actually be that dumb though.  Instead I just used the name of the song I was listening to at the time.

This is well known and not scary at all.  These forums are 100% public regardless.  Administration doesn't care if it is indexed by search engines because if they did then they would require that you log in to view the forum just like the marketplace.  That is why the marketplace is not indexed too.
