Title: The Current Cultural Period
Post by: cerealbox on May 18, 2012, 09:31 pm
What drugs are the popular ones these days and what does that say about our times? What did pot and LSD say about the 60's? Coke in the 80's? Or booze in the 20's even? I've been wondering this for a while now.

There is no specific drug now that defines our time, that's the beauty of it. With globalization the world is now a free-for-all where you can get anything you want at any time of day just by typing a few keys and clicking a few things on a web browser, the drug of our time is that there are drugs to suit anyone and can give any kind of high. The culture is choice and choice reflects the drug market.

Brilliant way to put it.

If you look around, you can see the culture's of various times all existing simultaneously - there's the sub-community of liquor-lovers, the trippers, the coke-heads ( I use the term with love <3 ).

That's the magic of the internet - it unrestricts culture.

Lol weed and opiates don't represent our time. They have been around for too long to be current. Research chemicals are just an example of choice dictating the market like I said above. No 1 drug/few drugs represent our cultures, all drugs do.

Pain pills are prescribed like candy nowadays. It's been called an epidemic by the DEA. Everyone and their mother smokes weed today and it's all over pop culture and close to being legalized.

The drugs of our time are sugar, alcohol and meat.. with a heaping helping of media on the side.

Again, different things being popular in different areas is another representation of choice.

I'm not sure we really have as much choice as Limitless posits. I do because I discovered the Silk Road, but the it's still very underground. I'd think the most popular drugs in America would be pot, meth and prescription pills. There's a documentary about meth where all the users essentially said "hey, at least it's not crack." I think what we're seeing is people using legitimized drugs. Marijuana is now medicine, it's okay to abuse prescription pills because they came from the doctor and at least meth isn't from the ghetto.
