I need a drop because I'm going to be ordering from overseas and there's a small chance of getting caught due to my country's (Australia) strict customs.
I've determined two types of possible locations nearby:
1: Letter boxes outside of businesses.
2: Letter boxes outside new or old apartment complexes.
For type 1 it's easy to see which boxes aren't in use, the businesses list which ones are in use. But I don't want to use these as there may be hidden cameras around. So for part 2 I need a way of determining which boxes are in use and which aren't. Does anyone have any ideas?

look on real estate websites for places to rent. ring up agent (payphone) and enquire about property and when its available for you to move in. Someone could always move in between the time you call and your delivery comes, but yeah....
-
That's a good idea but I am worried about people moving in in the small window of time. It's not likely though. do you think real estate agents or landlords check the mail?

From the US, UK and Indian sellers I've talked to, they all offer tracking numbers with no signature needed. So why not deliver it to an empty house, when the tracking number says it has arrived, go and pick it up. If someone has moved in, knock on the door and say you were a previous tenant and ask if any mail has arrived (obviously give them the fake name you used for the order).
TIP: Find a house that looks like complete shit, chances are no one will be moving in anytime soon.

Great idea. Will probably go with an empty apartment.

However, make sure it doesn't look too uninhabited.
If the postman has to deliver to a house he hasn't seen anyone coming in or out of it for years, he might suspect, something's wrong.

good point, I have been warned about that

Its a good way to lose your package or get busted for theiving mail.
Get it sent to your own address, with your name on it. Otherwise just order local.

That's another way of looking at it which I have heard before. But I'm not sure if it's any more dangerous than being caught having illegal drugs shipped to your home in Australia.

Touche!
Shipping drugs in the mail is a high risk prospect however you look at it!
probably less time and form for mail theft eh!!!

What proof would anyone have of you yourself ordering them? Deny, deny, deny!!!

Shitloads of junk and uncollected mail is a good sign that no one is there. Also check offices spaces that have been merged together. Eg. Suite 13, 14 and 15 of an office floor maybe the one business and that means mailbox 14 and 15 are probably not in use except for old/junk mail
