Hey
I don't watch much TV or movies anymore, but I would like some recommendations. I am looking for the best educational documentary type movies to view. Anything on history or drugs are my preference. Don't recommend DMT: The spirit molecule, as I just saw it. Thanks

Timothy Leary - The man who turned on America.
(clear net warning) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6jmGSS955g
I watched this recently and I found it pretty awesome.

Tons of films.

I am extremely skeptical of Historical documentaries. Always paranoid of perspective, propaganda, and/or the legitimacy of written record (Depending how far back you would like to go)
I have watched nearly every single documentary on TopDocumentaryFilms.com (Great source if you don't have it bookmarked)
If you want an ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC YouTube channel to subscribe to for History then check out Crash Course. The dude and his brother run 3 different "courses" each. I highly recommend the World History playlist.

American History

The House I Live In - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2125653/
"From the dealer to the narcotics officer, the inmate to the federal judge, a penetrating look inside America's criminal justice system, revealing the profound human rights implications of U.S. drug policy. "
I thought it was a good look into the current state of the Drug War.

And you should be, I'm paranoid of most information I receive, it takes me a very long time before I accept anything. That's why I am asking about documentaries, add them to my research list!
-
overjoyed and anyone else... The Documentaries do not have to be about drugs!
-
SWANSEA LOVE STORY
I know you said it didn't have to be about drugs but this is one of the strongest docs ive seen in a while. SWANSEA LOVE STORY
-
It does not have to be about drugs, but I am certainly not shunning away drug documentaries. Bring em all on!

The image is from one of the episodes. ATHF is ridiculous. Seasons 1-3 are way better than the later seasons IMO.

I once had a small-dose shroom tea that made me very sleepy. After 2 hours or so of minor tripping, I decided to hit the hay, and settled down in bed to watch a few youtubes to lull me to shroomy dreams. What happened next was instead one of my most stimulating shroom experiences ever:
Fractals- The Colors of Infinity
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk6QU94xAb8
Narrated by Arthur C. Clarke, god damnit! It's fantastic. It's not about drugs, can be construed as historical, but is very psychedelic-friendly. Fractals are beautiful, permeate all of nature, and are simultaneously so complex and so simple. Benoit Mandelbrot is a fascinating man, and Dr. Michael Barnsley explain fractals so clearly and passionately. Apparently the music is by David Gilmour, too.

+1 thanks new stem

No problem PK, i'm excited to read your thoughts on it!

VICE

A sample, yet not really educational/drug based: The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRuSS0iiFyo
It's nice to see these guys get an weekly hour long HBO spot now
And an offshoot of theirs... Motherboard https://www.youtube.com/motherboard
A sample from Motherboard: The Thorium Dream

Man on Wire or Degenerate Art are very cool documentaries. Man on Wire is a story about a man who tight roped across the twin towers. Degenerate Art is about glass pipe blowers and how it all came to be, and how it evolved into the amazingly artistic glass blowing we see today.

I quite enjoy VICE docos. Apparently Hamilton Morris is a writer for them, it's how I found out about the guy. He's got a few videos on VICE.
-
i like watching drugs inc. documentaries
i also like the film "crackheads gone wild" for the funny bits.. like when they are showing off their stolen goods to the camera.. and scene of the white guy tripping on lsd or whatever it was, and the tour of the "zoo-keepers" house.
-
My favorite docos are Baraka, Samsara, Koyanisqatsi, Powaqatsi, Naqoyqatsi & Chronos by Fricke/Magidson
and most of David Attenboroughs work is very detailed, he sets the world wide standard: 'First Life' series, 'Planet Earth' series, 'Natures Great Events' series and the 'Life' series.
Richard Hammonds 'Invisible World' is also very good.
Bluray is highly recommended for all.
-
The King of Kong. Fist Full of Quarters.
A movie about two people fighting over who got the top score of Donkey Kong. It sounds stupid but by the end I was on the edge of my seat, and cheering for all the little nerds who had a dream around the world.

I will highly recommend Baraka, and Samsara. Both are done by the same people/person. I can only imagine how awesome they would be on acid or shrooms or the like. There are not many words, but they are not needed in this type of documentary.
-
The doc of Bill Withers. ""Still Bill""
If you are a real docu dude, you already have seen it.
On the edge of your seat, from start to finish.
Nice guy, though, on his sneakers and all...
Can not find a link, sorry for that.

Sadly, not a pure doc but a docudrama. Much of the context was faked, they'd played each other before, etc.. Details about the fakery online; I don't have a link handy.
If you like that general topic but a bit more old school, TILT: the story of pinball 2000 is pretty great.
I love Know Your Mushrooms (particularly the famous/infamous Gary Lincoff anecdote recounting his first trip).
Why We Fight is pure excellence. Something about the Corporation grates on me a bit but is pretty stand up.
Oh, there's a doc on the mj biz in BC called The Union: the business behind getting high. That was good.
The Power of Nightmares was very good as I recall (politics and war).
An Inconvenient Truth, of course, slandered though it frequently is.
What did you think of DMT: the Spirit Molecule, pkizenko98? I have to say, I was slightly underwhelmed, but I had, er, high expectations.
-
ill admit, vice has some cool docs but imo the crew is just a bunch of douchebags
-
Oldtoby
I have seen the union but don't remember it much, will re-watch, I remember it being very good.
Off topic, this is not a documentary but a pretty dope movie. It's called, "Growing Op," has anyone seen this?
-
JourneyMan Pictures have some amazing documentaries.
If you go to their historical listing then you'll see lots of older ones that are free.
There is one called 'Cocaine Coast'.....about Cocaine in the west African nation of Guinea Bassu. .....fascinating!
Great threat by the way☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
-
Dear Zachary (I will never forget that fucking looney tunes woman....crazy fucking bitch)
Jesus Camp (AGGhhhhrrrrrrrrrr! Where's Christopher Hitchens when you need him....)
King of Kong
-
No problem PK, i'm excited to read your thoughts on it!
I'm gonna do my best to recreate the mood you were in when you watched it, can you tell me the dosage you used for the tea?
-
Two grams, steeped once, not eaten after. I watched about 2 hours after ingestion, snuggled up in bed. I think there was something particular to the shrooms too, because I have never had a batch make me feel so sleepy. I imagine that's not so important thought, the main idea is to hit a dose where you can follow a documentary without being distracted by your own head too much (though there is enough time for that during the beautiful fractal zoom-ins; if only it was in HD).
edit: I'm feeling the pressure now, I hope you like it as much as I did.
-
Lol No pressure, I'm sure I will enjoy. Thanks for sharing!

Oh I guess I didn't know that, but could see that. Same time it doesn't really change how much I liked the movie.
Least Ahoyhoy mentioned it as well. :P

Just watched Searching for Sugar Man, it was fucking awesome, one of best documentaries I have seen in a long time. It was the won the Oscar for best documentary as well. About this singer in the US who a lot of talented producers thought was amazing, but he never sold any albums. Though, a person from the US brought the album to South Africa, and this singer spread quickly, and after time pretty much all of South Africa knew about this singer, he is like the equivalent to Elvis Presley, so some of the South African's decide to hunt this guy down, and then the documentary ensues. 8)
-
Cosmos by Carl Sagan.
Old but still holds water to this day.
-
newstem
You have either completely fucked my life up with that documentary or you have opened my eyes in a new way. lol. Ill let you know which later!
-
Haha, well done to me either way! It's amazing how impactful fractals can be, I see them in everything now (and that's not just acid flashbacks). The most clear real-life structures resembling fractals are sea creatures, so I certainly have a new respect to them. It's a fractal universe.
-
What was interesting about watching the fractal doc. was that it was familiar. I could not tell you when or where I heard it before but I know I had some vague recollection of it. I have been watching that doc. in fragments since this past weekend. I still have not finished watching it in its entirety. My point is, it wasn't new to me and the doc. proved that point by the way it kept referring to eternity and infinity. The combination of that message of eternity and infinity mixed with the rest of my weekend led me to a mental level that I have never been on. It was not the drugs, those wore off and I still remain on this level. So newstem, thank you to infinity for leading me to that doc!
-
Borat ;D
-
If noy mentioned, an older doc called Hoop Dreams or the Thin Blue Line, which actually resulted in the subget of the film being released form prison.
-
I'm somewhat of a documentary buff. In particular I like to watch documentaries by Louis Theroux, I think he's great at doing them. He's covered all kinds of topics, some of them are about drugs and crime but really they run the gamut from A to Z.
You can find a lot of them on this youtube channel below. Fascinating stuff.
CLEARNET
http://www.youtube.com/user/Iouistheroux
As already mentioned by others on page 2, VICE magazine also do some very interesting documentaries from time to time, but there's a lot of stupid shit on their channel too so you kinda have to sift through the good and bad. Some of their docs are amazing though, so it's worth the effort of going through the list to find the ones that interest you.
-
This Film is not yet Rated, Pururambo, and Magic Trip are all great viewing. Not sure if any have been mentioned yet in this thread. All 3 are on netflix, too.
I second the union, and find DMT: The Spirit Molecule to be in the same vein.
-
All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace. It's a 3 part documentary by the BBC. I found it very interesting. (clearnet link) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Watched_Over_by_Machines_of_Loving_Grace_(TV_series)
It's about our relationship with computers and how dominant they became in shaping the world. First part is about the world economy and how faith in computers influenced recent financial collapses, second is about the environment and ecology, and third about human biology and racism.
-
Agree with fire, anything by Adam Curtis -- he's no joke.
Recommend starting with:
The Century of Self - 2002 (CLEARNET: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Century_of_the_Self)
Illustrates how Freud's theories on unconsciousness led to Edward Bernays' development of public relations, the use of desire over need and self-actualisation as a means of achieving economic growth and the political control of population.
You will see the world different after watching.
Also great by Curtis:
* The Mayfair Set -- about the early days of buccaneer capitalists.
* The Power of Nightmares -- about the extant parallels between Islamism in the Arab world and Neoconservatism in the US, and how both need to inflate a myth of a dangerous enemy.
* yeah All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace as fire mentioned.

A lot of good things mentioned so far. I didn't read all the posts, though so forgive me if any of these are redundant.
Metal: A Headbangers Journey is a kickass documentary made by an anthropologist who happens to be a headbanger. Well made and interesting approach to looking at metal.
Exit Through the Gift Shop is a really cool, multi-layer doc that's about Banksy, sort of. It's funny and intriguing to see how the story unfolds and takes on its own life.
Through the Wormhole is an excellent science type show that explores hella-fied deep questions about the universe. Plus it's narrated by Morgan Freeman.
I Like Killing Flies. Sort of a food documentary but very much an interesting character study. Funny.
Grizzly Man and Into the Abyss by Dir. Werner Herzog probably wouldn't enhance any drug experience but they are moving and challenging and nobody else that I've ever found really makes documentaries like him.
-
Back in 02 or 03 maybe there was a film called Modulations (Caipirinha Productions) that I will probably never forget. It wasn't super amazing but it was a good look at the history, roots and evolution of electronic music.
-
The vice channel on youtube is full of interesting documentaries; some drug related, others not. Louis Theroux's series are very good. Not drug related although there was one episode about meth. Definately worth checking out.

Louis Theroux's series are indeed great. He has one season made in the USA. Some interesting episodes from it include him following Autistic children, the Westboro Baptist Church, and the Porn industry. I found nearly all the topics he covers very interesting, and he performs his interviews quite intelligently and with much of an open mind and tolerance.

You might enjoy Thrive - some of the info is take it or leave it/a little fluffy/hippie propaganda, but some good food for thought.
Adam Curtis: The century of Self - great shorts on advertising/media, money/corruption, politics, etc.
-
I found Dirty Pictures! Recommended.
+Encounters at the End of the World. Watch in HD.

Have you ever seen the Che movie with Del Toro playing Che. It's not bad!
-
Okay - not all to do with drugs, and some are pretty mainstream. But all worth a watch. I'm a lover of all documentary genres so theres no theme here sorry ;)
• Jesus Camp
• Dog Town & Z Boys
• High on Crack Street
• Through the Wire
• The Farm
• Stevo - PCP saved my life (not educational in the slightest but hilarious indeed).
Recent ones:
• The Imposter
• Searching for Sugar Man
• You've been Trumped
Thanks to everyone else for the recommendations too. This will keep me busy for weeks...!

Power of Nightmares
The Trap
The Century of the Self
The Corporation
The House I Live In
Human Resources
All Watched Over by Loving Machines of Grace
Manufacturing Consent
Paradise Lost
West of Memphis
The Thin Blue Line
Fog of War
Mr Death
Tabloid
Standard Operating Procedure
5 Broken Cameras
American Radical: The Trials of Dr. Norman Finkelstein
Waco: The Rules of Engagement
Crazy Rulers of The World (the actual documentary that the film The Men Who Stare at Goats was based on)
Until The Light Takes Us
Taxi to the Dark Side
Into the Abyss
Marjoe
Every single one of these is excellent. I'm a docu-junkie and this isn't just a list of documentaries I know, it's the best ones. None of them are History Channel bullshit, and none of them are silly conspiracy nonsense. That last claim might sound questionable when I post a documentary that the men who stare at goats was based on, but really, watch it. It was on mainstream television here, and opens with a clip of General Stubblebine (who controlled over 18,000 troops at one point) ruefully lamenting the fact that he was never able to walk through the wall of his office, despite trying many times.
-
Nothing to do with drugs but there,s 3 paradise lost films or the more recent west of memphis about 3 american teens convicted of killing 3 young kids the paradise lost follows thro the trial up to recently in the 3rd one, I prefered these as it takes you through it without knowing the outcome 1st its a great story of real injustice :)
-
While it is not a drug documentary, I highly recommend watching Dark Days. It is a documentary about a bunch of homeless drug addicts and the mentally ill that used to live in a little community that they built in an abandoned NYC subway line, in complete darkness. The guy filming the documentary lived among them for a long time in order to film it. It is eye opening. Anyone who is into documentaries and who hasn't seen it, should do so. I believe that it is available over Netflix's streaming option.
Dark Days trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjjQJipwSxQ
man I watched this, its amazing, thank you for sharing :)
as far as contributing to the thread, all i can think of is TEDtalks, they are ten/twenty minute talks on over 1000+ topics and all available online at their website/netflix (mostly scientific in nature). sorry if its already been mentioned on the thread, i havent had time to look through properly yet ;D
-
Dark Days is fantastic.
Also check out Off The Gird: Life on the Mesa. About a community who live without electricity, police etc. in the middle of nowhere somewhere in the US.
-
Cosmos by Carl Sagan, for sure!

ABC docos
