Title: Quick question about PGP
Post by: tysohot on May 25, 2013, 03:13 am
I have already made a couple orders and just for assurance sake want to know if I need to have a valid email to send encrypted messages to the vendors? Or does the email even matter? I accidentally typed @tor.org instead of @tormail.org when making my private/public key.

Thanks.

I haven't used tormail.org, but for the public/private keys the address is pretty much immaterial. All that matters is that you have the private key safe.

There's a good YouTube tutorial below. Once you get the hang of it, it's really simple. The terminology makes it more confusing than it actually is!

The private key, like the public key, is usually stored as a file (not to be mistaken with your password). Basically when someone sends you a message they have to use your public key to create the message. Without the private key, even if someone figured out your password, it would still be prohibitive to determine the private key. So just think of the private key as an "unlocking mechanism" that's been broken up into two pieces (the password being one part / the private key being the other).
