Title: Current best way to anonymously get BTC
Post by: schmuckboy on July 11, 2013, 09:21 pm
So I've been out of the game for a while and I come back to see that Bitinstant got ass raped by regulations, bitfloor is dead, and blue sky traders isn't working either.

So help me out fellow SilkRoaders! Whats site are you guys using to get Bitcoin these days?

Interested as well. I've seen localbitcoin talked about a bit, as well.

Some people are using localbitcoin where you can meet local sellers and pay with cash, then have your coins sent to a wallet on a btc washing site like bitcoin frog, before sending them to your SR wallet. I think that's the process anyway, if anyone could clarify. But yeah that seems to be an effective method used or people also send cash in the post to their BTC localbitcoin seller.

I can't find any coins. No one in my area is on that site or selling them.

I am screwed

So I've been researching and it looks like getting bitcoin anonymously isn't even possible. I guess there's always local bitcoins but fuck that shit, the exchange rate is always too high.

It looks like I'll have to buy with my real info. So I've got a couple questions:

If I change my wallet address after the transaction, will I be safe?
If not whats the best site for laundering bitcoin? (I'm aware of bitcoin fog and I think blockchain.info has a fogger too)

Two words Camp Bx bro. Mtgox and Bitinstant are hot (unsafe) I know I personally am staying away from them something is obviously going on with them and pressure is being applied from somewhere.

Analogy: You don't put on a condom unless your gonna fuck!

The only way you will be truly anonymous is buying face to face. Don't forget, there is nothing illegal about buying bitcoins. Meeting someone and paying with cash upfront makes the source of the coin in your SR wallet literally untraceable.

What's the reality as far as actually tracking down where and who bitcoins go to?

First of all what do I have to do for LE to actually try and track my bitcoin activity? Is there any chance that a small fry like me is going to be targeted? If they start trying to track my bitcoin activity isn't that like federal level shit?

Second, how would they know my wallet address is from SR and even if they can determine its from SR how would they link it to my account (especially if I change my wallet address after each transaction)? Is it even possible? Has anyone been busted using these methods?

I'm interested in this too.

If you change your wallet address after each transaction, how is it linked to it?

Surely the only way to get caught would be for your vendor to be busted and then for them to work backwards following the trail... however I very much doubt small purchases would illicit a response, especially considering it crosses international lines in most cases (the trade), would cost a tonne of money and be bound to the federal law where your vendor is based.  so I think, realistically, it's pretty unlikely.

localbitcoins.com does more than just arrange face-to-face transactions between buyers and sellers local to each other.  They list all kinds of online offers as well, including Bank Cash Deposit offers, just like BitFloor but with individual sellers with transaction history and ratings and an escrow system, etc.  Here's what I did once BitFloor BitTheDust:

1. Go to localbitcoins.com using TorBrowser or Tails.

2. Create an account, giving them a tormail.org email address.

3. Find a seller accepting cash deposits at a US bank with a branch nearby (I've mainly used Bank of America and Chase so far).  Many of them are listed here: https://localbitcoins.com/buy-bitcoins-online/usd/cash-deposit/ but for whatever reason some of the listings aren't categorized correctly so make sure to look through all USD online offers here before giving up: https://localbitcoins.com/buy-bitcoins-online/usd/

4. Press the "Buy" button next to the offer.

5. Enter the amount you want to buy in either USD or BTC, leave a note for the seller if you want, and then press "Send Trade Request"

6. Take note of the deposit info.  You'll need the bank name, the account number, the state the account is located in (out of state deposits are usually different than in state deposits and require the account state), and sometimes the name of the account holder, although I have been able to deposit without the state and account holder name one time at Chase bank.  Each seller is different and will provide the information using different means.  Some ask you to text them for it, which is when I cancel the transaction.  Others offer it freely in their listing where you can see it before even pressing the buy button.  And others include it in the response message you got when you pressed "Send Trade Request".

7. Take note of the localbitcoins.com transaction # so you can write it on the deposit slip somewhere, like: "ref# L41235CXFU".  This helps the seller tell who made which deposit.  The account holder can usually see this online wherever deposit slips are viewable at their bank website.

8. Go to the bank and deposit the cash.  They won't ask you for ID.  You can tell them it's not your account and you can tell them you don't know this or that about the account or account holder.  At worst they'll tell you they can't accept the deposit and you can let the seller know, give them a chance to adjust on their end, or you can cancel the transaction.

9. Once the deposit is made, log back into localbitcoins.com and mark the escrow paid so the seller can look for the deposit and release bitcoin into your localbitcoins.com wallet.

9. When you see the coin in your localbitcoins.com wallet, transfer to your silkroad wallet.  This takes a up to a couple hours depending network on mining/confirmation activity at the time.

Some tips:

- There is no fee over the amount you request to buy.  If you ask for $100 worth of bitcoin, deposit exactly $100 into the bank account.  It might be wise to deposit amounts that are not rounded out to make your transaction stand out from others. For example, buy and deposit $101.17 worth of bitcoin so you don't blend in with everyone else buying round amounts.  It's not uncommon for sellers get 10, 20, 30 or more transactions a day.

- The trade rates can vary wildly so be patient and don't pay too much over market rates.  I frequently find rates that higher than market, but still comparable to the premium you pay with bitinstant fees or bitfloor's inflated USD/BTC rates that I used to pay.

- Be careful and don't trust just any seller.  I only use sellers with documented history and that are well rated.

- Sometimes I don't know if the seller will provides enough info for me to be comfortable walking into a bank to deposit cash.  For example, if they don't tell you the account holder name AND they don't tell you the state the account is in, you might just want to cancel the transaction.  I do this now after being rejected once at CitiBank.

- This is not truly anonymous since you are walking into a bank, handing cash to a bank teller, probably on camera.  But if you were comfortable with BitFloor, or BlueSkyTraders, or even BitInstant, this is pretty much a decentralized version of that with less chance of getting shut down.

Good luck!

Tbh,

I think people get waaaayy too worked up about anonymous bitcoins. The reason they want more information is more because of credit check reasons than anything else. Even then, all anyone sees is that you sent coins into a wallet which got sent to another wallet and from there to a few other wallets. 99% of SR are people buying a few grams at most of drugs through the mail. You're not destabilizing the Western World, just relax, buy your hundred dollars or whatever in bitcoins, and tumble them if you're really concerned.

It's easier than you'd think to follow the path of Bitcoins since the blockchain is public info you can literally map out the path of your bitcoins. Changing wallets might hide it a bit more but to the skilled observer it just makes it a bit harder for them. Bitcoins were never designed to be anonymous from the beginning. There was a study (I'll try to dig it up later) where two guys from a University did exactly that. They were able to co-relate Bitcoins from the place of orgin to it's final destination. Now if you used your real info to buy the bitcoins .....

Changing wallet address on SR, running your Bitcoins through a secured wallet on your computer, and for the truly paranoid converting and then reconverting to another digital currency should help some. Best way to buy Bitcoins right now I'd say localbitcoins if you have a seller in your area. Some thing stinks over at Bitinstant...

No amount of money or lawyers would be enough to fight Fincen and regulations they dictate. They're a global adversary(in our case) that has power and support across the globe and works with multiple agencies to enforce their rules. I can see Bitinstant point of view, they really have no choice but the people that use Bitcoins sure do and not using Bitinstant is a choice I'm sure a lot more ppl will start to make.
