Title: Deep Freeze for securing your pc ?
Post by: mikewolf on August 10, 2012, 12:41 pm
I was checking online tutorials on how to run SR securely from usb or how to make a hidden partition when it suddenly hit me.
Why not make a few gig partition and use Deep Freeze on it? The only downside i see is that you'd have to download torbrowser every time you wanna check SR, but that's about it.

Thoughts ? Comments ?

Deep Freeze is itself vulnerable, and it doesn't even stop malicious programs from running. Malware can simply exploit the Deep Freeze application itself and turn it off the same way a Deep Freeze admin can. There are worms that are known to bypass it, so it's safe to assume LE malware could do so easily. If you must use Deep Freeze, DO NOT log in from an administrator account when running anything to do with SR. You have the right idea as far as creating a separate partition goes, just make sure no other partitions containing anything related to you are present when you browse SR.

I'd recommend running a virtual machine (an operating system running within an operating system) or at least sandboxing the Tor Browser Bundle, which offers protection similar to Deep Freeze except it doesn't just redirect disk writes. Virtual machines are the safer choice, but require more time to set up and take a far greater toll on system resources. TBH, either choice is still better than trusting a stranger to sell you an untampered "SR thumb drive" if you don't know how to set one up yourself.
