Title: I'm So New To PGP It Hurts
Post by: lluskyy on September 29, 2012, 09:48 pm
Okay I know there's a bagillion threads about PGP, but I'm hungover and I really want to learn this right now as I've been procrastinating for too long.

I downloaded some GPG and I put in my name email address yada yada yada. Now, how do I figure out what my public key is? I've seen that huge block of text and it is definitely overwhelming  :o :o :o

The PGP Club is probably the best for this post mate, when you've created a *Public* PGP Key (The big block of text), then post it and I'll try and send a message to you

Youtube PGP tutorials.  Really easy and helpful.

How did you make your past orders without PGP?!

First of all, you didn't use your real name and regular email address, right? I assume you didn't but to be sure: use your Silk Road username and Tormail address.

To get your public key, you need to export it to a text file.

If you are using gpg4win on WINDOWS: There should be some kind of button that says: "export". Be sure you check the box that says: "Armor" to get it in text format (that's called ASCII).

If you are using the LINUX command line: run the command:
$ gpg -a --export "your keyname" > mypublickey.txt
and it will create a text file with your public key in your current working directory.

Either way, your public key should start with:
-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----

I used my SR name and email. I'm using GPG keychain access? After having exported my key to the desktop several times, it just brings it back to keychain access instead of a text editor. What am I doing wrong? Also I'm using a mac if that anything to do with it.

I did it unencrypted... Stupid I know! Which is why I'm wanting to learn it now.

Here is the step-by-step Windows GPG guide I created that is very detailed and covers the installation of GPG4Win Lite, creating private keys, importing public keys, encrypting sensitive information, and exporting public keys.
