Title: A few noob q's
Post by: TA on August 09, 2013, 05:04 am
So, trying to get set up to keep myself anonamous but Im a total noob and have a few questions. So far I have created a tails dvd. Got it working and Im going to completly remove my hard drive soon. Is there anything I need to do to configure tails for optimum security? I couldnt get the time to change to my timezone. It required a password?? But it is set to utc time right now. Havent learned to use pgp yet but I will before I do "anything". Also wanting to get a vpn to keep my isp in the dark about tor. Any recomendations for vpn's? Anything else I am forgetting? Thanks ahead of time for any help!

There's not much you need to do, or even can do. It's designed to be a complete solution for newbs and any changes you make are lost after a reboot anyway, except what you save in the persistent volume.

You need to log in as the administrator to change the time zone, but you don't want to change the time zone, because that reduces your anonymity. It's best when all Tails users are on the same time zone.

You can't run a VPN on Tails, but some routers support it, so you could set up the VPN on your router and run Tails through it.

I appreciate the reply. Also, you cant have a persistent volume on a dvd correct?
