Tor is mostly funded by the US government (ironic, right?). What happens when they decide it is not worth all illegal traffic. They seem to be heading in the direction of suppressing anonymity. It's not like tor can claim plausible deniability. It's public knowledge that SR runs on Tor.
Am I missing a piece of crucial info on the operation of Tor (I.E the information is hidden from the operators, or its like torrent and can't really be shut down)?

Governments need things like Tor just as much as you and I do. Same goes for encryption. Think about it.

Some people you would not expect use tor to conduct certain business, and some of these people are in high level positions. Tor is not going to be taken down, the government wouldn't allow that.

I suspect they'll leave TOR alone for a while and go after the BTC's again.
