I was reading a vendor's profile page and they stated that anyone giving them less than 5 out of 5 review will get blacklisted publicly. Does this seem right? Aren't people allowed to have an opinion that is less than perfect about a vendor or a transaction? Am I missing something?
I'm relatively new here and have given all three vendors 5 out of 5 reviews because they deserved it. I don't like the idea of being blackmailed into giving a fixed review. It seems to defeat the purpose of the review system. It seems OK if a vendor asks for you to resolve any issues before giving a bad review. Most vendor profile pages request this. But the blackmail thing just rubs me completely the wrong way. I presume there is some history to this. Can someone explain why a threat like that would be allowed?
To be clear I have had only 5 out of 5 transactions and expect to continue dealing with the great vendors that earn high ratings.

"Can someone explain why a threat like that would be allowed?"
Probably because
1.) Nobody is forced to buy anything from anyone here.... so if someone voluntarily transacts with an asshole... that's sorta on them.
2.) Unless there is a scam or fraud or LE involved.. the solution is as obnoxious as the problem.
If someone says they want things a certain way (whatever their reasons) and it's not to your taste... take your business to the next vendor. If someone's preferences or rules cause them to lose enough business.. they may modify their approach.
And it's not really a threat to be shunned, all they can do is say "no thanks" to your business just like you can to theirs.
Voluntarism is great isn't it?

+1 Nice answer.
It also adds another reason SR reviews are just about worthless.
Should raise a flag, and come check the forums.
I'd have to say, anybody NOT getting a 5/5 from me probably isn't going get my repeat biz anyhow.
You really should PM a vendor if you are going to not 5/5 him if you want to continue a good relationship.
Works well ;) If not, like he said above, move on.

thanks philter3 and uniwiz, yes I agree I can take my business elsewhere. I guess I was asking more of a meta-question as to whether this type of process is common practice and if it is deemed acceptable to the site's overlords. I was careful not to name the vendor since I may choose to do business with them anyway. I've only given 5 out of 5 reviews and hope I continue to have that kind of good fortune with the sellers I work with.
Very much agree with your statement uniwiz #2 that this solution is as obnoxious as the problem!
It just so happens in this case there were only two domestic vendors offering the product I wanted so the choices are limited. May just pass on that product for now until the options are more palatable!

It shouldn't be the norm but it is.
My self I would post the vendors name, and reason without drama, on the forum.
Not being new, I a little more credibility.
I would have still PM'ed the vendor 1st.
Most vendors respond fairly.
People have been complaining about the review system as long as I have been here.
Read the FAQ sticky on "what to do if my package doesn't arrive", might give you some ideas.

I think it's stupid for a vendor to do that, he'd be decreasing the number of his customers.
