Full disclosure: I'm not a computer expert. If this is a stupid question, please don't be too harsh :)
I've noticed a few well-known antivirus companies offering 'secured' VPN services - for a price, of course, which is not particularly expensive. Would using something like this in conjunction with TOR improve system security?

Just go over that list very carefully. The VPN should meet the following: it should NOT keep any logs, it should accept Bitcoin, and it should NOT be headquartered in the US. I just added that last one because of what happened to Lavabit and what its founder and president said about the US government.
