Title: Files downloaded from Tor
Post by: ketama on May 31, 2013, 10:34 am
Hi everyone, i have downloaded some pdfs and txts from tor onto a shared folder (read only, encrypted in a usb stick) and then i opened those in an offline virtual machine. I'm wondering what should i do to check that this files aren't keylogger or LE malware, in order to copy that files on another pc safely. Thanks and sorry for my english  :)

Have you tried the basics like scanning them with a decent AV?

yes but in sort of guide i read about double checking MD5, SHA hashesand verifying PGP signatures..
I mean, is it enough just to scan the files with an av?

Im no guru, but many guides say not to download pdf files from tor. why take the chance? are the files that important?
if i smell the smallest whiff of dodgy, i dont do it.

You're worried about txt and pdf files? And they came with md5s to confirm validity? That's mad...

Anyway if you're on linux just run the command `md5sum` probably piping or specifying the pdf's name on the command line. The output should match what was specified.

Same goes for `sha1sum`, `sha512sum`, etc.
