I am a total newb concerning tor, bit coins etc, but, before I make a purchase I want to know how I can make my Macbook impenetrable to outside detection. I saw somewhere a recommendation to use Linux in a USB for all the access and p2p programmes, but of course I do not know how to set this up. Is this easy to do with a Mac? When using tor what are the odds of being flagged by my service provider? You have probably heard all this before and I apologise in advance!

Using a hardened live Linux distro geared towards anonymity is on balance better than trying to harden a Mac. There are packages like Liberte and amnesia that make this relatively easy to do. And if you are attempting to disguise Tor use from your ISP you should look into using obfsproxy. There is a Snow Leopard/Lion obfsproxy bundle here: https://www.torproject.org/dist/obfsproxy/tor-obfsproxy-browser-bundle-2.3.12-2-osx.zip
