Two Australian law enforcement agencies are crowing about their arrest of a man who attempted to import illicit drugs into Australia using the online drug marketplace Silk Road. In a press release brought to our attention by CSO, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service warn Australians that users of Silk Road and services like it "will not always remain anonymous and when caught, they will be prosecuted."

Silk Road uses two cryptographic technologies to shield itself from law enforcement scrutiny. The site is only available on Tor, the cryptographic network that obfuscates the source and destination of Internet traffic. And payments are only accepted using Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency whose peer-to-peer design makes it difficult for governments to regulate or monitor.

“Criminals are attempting to exploit the international mail system through online networks, but the recent arrest demonstrates that we are one step ahead of them," said AFP official Peter Sykora. “The AFP will continue to identify, investigate and prosecute individuals or groups importing narcotics into Australia, including via illicit e-commerce platforms such as Silk Road."

The press release doesn't explain how Australian officials caught the suspect, who "was charged with 10 offenses relating to the importation, trafficking and possession of narcotics and prohibited weapons." While the government tries to give the impression that it is monitoring transactions on Silk Road itself, it's possible it caught the suspect through more traditional means.

The incident highlights Bitcoin's role as the currency of choice for activities at the fringes of society. Last month we noted that in addition to its use in drug markets, Bitcoin has also proven a popular currency for pornography and gambling

The prohibited weapons thing makes me think he was getting into more than just normal recreational drug use. Chances are, he just was monitored after they caught a package in import. Most likely just as a scare move to try to discourage new people to use TOR and the SR.

Read the article carefully, it appears that the intention is to make you nervous. Also remember what we do here is not legal or we wouldn't do it here.

Dont you guys watch Australia Border Security or Border Patrol?

The aussies dont do anything by halves, if your going into business in that country you better be prepared, or face LONG terms in prison.

Thats such rubbish blaming Btc currency as the cause of making purchases easy and anonymous. If anything I could use xbox/itunes/nintendo points to trade/sell/buy drugs. Once the bitcoin blocks end we should consider using these to barter, then we`ll see what the government will do about it.

It would if people were serious about it, otherwise it`d be obsolete.

I agree. I am going to make it my personal mission to get as many people as i can connected here on the deep web.
This is the only place where true freedom lies.  It has to start somewhere.

If you follow free will to its entire definition, then no there is no absolute freedom in this sense. I do admire the spirit though so by all means go ahead.

ImaginaryTailus13 i get the feeling that sometimes you take what people say far too seriously and literal.
I was merely implicating i would try to get people more connected here than anywhere else because this use of anonymity is where people feel safe.
Other than that, of course the governmental society we live in is far from free.  This is why i made a point about it, so we should all stick together and say a massive FUCK YOU in any way we can.

You are correct. Tell me then what is your definition of freedom? I would like to know before I go any further.

A$AP.

There is already a thread about this.
They busted him bringing in drugs like a tard. Herp da derp.
They probably looked on his comp and before they could get to the login screen he had already told them where everything was and how to log in to the Road.

 >:( >:( Fuck that!!! I'm offended. I don't consider myself to be part of 'the fringes of society', I'm actually rather mainstream. How am I 'fringe' when it's the motherfuckers that work for the government that keep chosen drugs illegal while the deadliest are still available OTC.

The book is life changing if you have the right perspective and want to know why society is the way it is. The whole book is like one long quote.

The book is by Gustave Le Bon and called, 'The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind'. Propaganda by Edward Bernays is okay and many think he was the pioneer of public relations, but I would argue that Le Bon had a much more accurate perception of the the mentality of herd instinct. If you interpret it in light of current civilization he is dead on.
