okay, somehow in the course of my first few posts i managed to collect a -1 karma - not sure how, but that's life
now, i went to give a board member a +1 and can't find how to "applaud" them (as the boards search results indicated a +1 karma was)
is this an ability not allowed newbies?

Still being a "newbie" myself, I assume that once you reach the 50 post count and become a full member, you'll be able to +1/-1 other folks regardless of their forum status.
Looks like someone also +1'd you.

You'll need more than 50 posts. Not sure how many it is these days.
People love giving bad karma if they dislike even a tiny bit. Giving + karma takes more effort.
This makes karma pretty useless.

I'm looking forward to being able to give +1 for posts that deserve it myself. I think people should be able to add karma from newbie rank since there are alot of great posts out there, and maybe take the -1 away until 50 posts to keep people from neg spamming.
Website karma makes me lol anyways, look at all the drama it generates at reddit

I know... the extent of the karma-whoring epidemic at reddit has made many of the subreddits unusable for me.

I saw the number 100 tossed out there somewhere but I could be wrong.

Yeah it is 100 posts when you get the ability to "Thank" or "Discourage" (i.e., +1 or -1)
I got my second -1 over the past 48 hours or so! I don't believe there's a way to find out why you were negged, but I suspect mine were:
1) The time I called all chiropractors litigious charlatans (they are)
2) This weekend, I asked how to take cocaine if your nose is blocked, and a couple of people in the thread didn't seem to like that, one even reported me to the mods it seems!

Yep! Then if you piss the wrong person off you can count on them having their pals come in and downvote spam something until it's hidden. I gave up trying to be genuine on there and now I hatefully troll. Oddly enough I've been getting more upvotes than ever.

What is "reddit"?
