Title: Tor Working without Tor on my PC?! WTF?!!!
Post by: FritzTheKat on September 13, 2013, 06:33 pm
Using the Tor bundle on PC to get to onion, only work as "run as client only", when trying to install relay within Tor, it stops functionning, with the following warning messages:

Warning Could not bind to 0.0.0.0.0:443: Address already in use [WSAEADDRINUSE]. Is Tor already running?
Notice Closing partially-constructed Directory listener on 0.0.0.0:9030
Warning Controller gave us config lines that didn't validate. Failed to bind one of the listener ports.
Vidalia Settings:
Sharing
Relay traffic inside the Tor network (non-exit relay)
Board stating:
Error Applying Settings
Vidalia was unable to apply your Server settings to Tor.
Unable to set option: Failed to bind one of the listener ports.

Pulled out the USB key from the PC and Tor was still running!!!!!!
I opened new pages, wrote a few lines here and there. It was working!!! So that means that somehow, Tor was already running from my PC without me knowing how and from where?! What gives?!!!
I am pretty sure I am not the only one this has happened to.

Could it be a MITM attack?! In any case, how could Tor be working from my PC WITHOUT the USB key being plugged in?!

WHere did you download TOR  in first place, did you download TOR BROWSER BUNDLE on to USB and then extract it on USB or did you put it in somewhere like "Downloads" and then extract to USB?
