Hi, I,m new to Silk Road and to writing on forums. I,m hoping someone out there can help...I began trying to set things up for shopping on Silk Road last week...despite feeling like a kid in a sweet shop i,ve resisted the urge to jump in and have been doing lots of reading about how things work. Where i,m getting stuck at the moment is in downloading PGP...I,m trying to set up Symantec PGP desktop peer review. I,ve saved it but don't know what to do next can anyone help? I,ve been looking online but i,m struggling to make sense of the guides. As you will have worked out i,m not clued up about this stuff and will not go shopping until i have PGP set up and i know how to work it. I have instructions about how to use it and i will work through that but i can't even set it up so i,m stuck...any advice would be appreciated Thanks in advance
-
Have not heard of the Symantec product. Just use something like GPG4USB, it is very intuitive.
-
You don't really need pgp/gpg unless you're selling. You'll lose customers if you can't work it out but you'll lose nothing if you're a buyer but you'll gain a couple of minutes not messing about with that.
Of course I'm joking but personally i don't think it's a big deal for the average joe. If it was it would be mandatory.
-
mcguire39 thank you for that...i,ve managed to download it and i,m now having a look around. Superconductor...i thought a lot of people wouldn't do business with me unless i encrypted....jeez and i thought Ebay was complicated ;)
-
Basically for every order you must read the vendor's profile page. That's where you find out if they require encryption for your address, what format they want your address in, what days they ship, etc.
-
Thanks again that's helpful
-
I'm a new vendor and the GPG thing took me a long time to get my head around. I read up on it for hours but the program itself is very logical. There are also explanations online as well. I just googled how to use GPG after a bit.
-
Thanks UV Appreciate that

i would think you'd want any comm between you and a vendor encrypted
if it helps, i was having a bit of a problem getting a handle on it, and rustykoin pm'd me some simple instructions that filled in the gaps i had in the tutorial's instructions - i've copied and pasted them below. At the bottom i've added my public key in case you want to test encrypt some text and post. Just remember, you'll need to use my public key to encrypt a message to me, as i have the private key associated with that public key. If you want to receive an encrpted message, after opening gpg4usb, generate your own public key (as in rustykoin's instructions below, and post it.
Okay first forget about the whole Clipboard deal you mentioned, gpg4usb has the whole deal. Now open your gpg4usb and just paste my whole public key in there, like I said in the window that looks like a text editor. Even where it says BEGIN PGP PUBLIC and down to where it says END PGP PUBLIC, the whole thing. Now if you look at the menu bar at the top where it says Keys, click that and go to Import Keys and finally click Clipboard. If you've done it right then it should pop up with my name and even my tormail address and then add it to your chain.
Okay, so now that you've got that done what you want to do it clear all that crap out of the Clipboard and type a short message, could be anything. After you're done with your message make sure to click the check box next to my name (on the right side key chain list) and finally click the Encrypt button. This produces a mass of gibberish that I can only decode with my private key.
Okay, now what you want to do is copy that gibberish and send it to me in the next message you send me. I'll let you know if you've done it right. Meanwhile, send me your public key and I will send you an encrypted message that you can decrypt.
If you're unsure on how to create keys, I'll break it down quickly. As soon as you open the program a wizard should pop up instructing you to create a key pair, if it does not then click on the Help menu button and select Open Wizard. Click the first next to keep everything in English and then select Create New Key Pair, the first option in blue. Click on the Create New Key button and it will pop up with a variety of info to fill out.
I suggest you use a tormail.org email account for your keys to keep them further secure. Also make sure to create a strong password as you will be prompted each time you try to Decrypt a message someone sends you, and this adds an extra layer of security. Finally make sure to click the Never Expires check box next to the date.
As soon as you fill out your info and password the program will create your public and private keys, this will only take a second. In order to preview your public key after it's created click on Manage Keys and select the check box next to your newly created key, then choose Export to File. Name it anything you want, but my suggestion is tbart Public.txt or something, but as long as it is a text file. Now you can go find your file, open it up and there is your public key which you can give to people in order to send you messages. Never give out your private key to anyone, it is only for you.
The way PGP works is that your public key encrypts messages that only your private key can decrypt. That is why it is so secure, because even if the message was intercepted then no one would be able to crack it because they don't have your private key.
Anyway bro, I hope this helps. Again, feel free to send me an encrypted message using my public key. Also send me your public key so I can send you a message as well. It's intimidating at first, and a lot of information to absorb at once. But trust me, give it a few good trys and you'll be a professional in no time.

Don't listen to this ^^
You must learn to PGP in order to encrypt your address, it's paramount for your safety.
There are good videos on youtube which will teach you the basics and even a sticky in this forum to practice.
Gpg4win is a very easy program to use.

Cheers....couldn't open that one tho'....said i didn't have the private key number for it...*confused again*
-
just to make sure, i encrypted it with your public key from before, so you should have used the key thingee in the right side window with the key pair icon showing next to it
2nd possibility - had an issue earlier where when i would copy an encrpted msg into the text editor window in gpg4usb, it would go to double line space feed - and would not decrypt
- if that's the issue, to correct it i'd copy from the thread post here into a text file first (notepad, word doc etc) then re-copy it over to gpg4usb text editor window
and just the basics, i'm assuming you are copying the entire string, from where it starts "begin PGP msg" (including all the dashes) to including the bottom line that sez "end pgp msg"
here's a new one in case that one was somehow corrupted
