What do you think about using carrier pigeons as a shipping method? I don't know much about them or how much they can carry but maybe for domestic orders it would be an option.
-
I think a carrier pigeon requires having been to its destination and it's starting point (which it obviously has).
I don't think you can just whisper it an address and it go right away and drop off some nugs for your buddy lol. Maybe locally!
-
Pigeons only know their way back home. So you would need to give each dealer you want to receive goods from, your own pigeons. I doubt that you would find many dealers willing to give you their address for sending them your pigeons and hosting and feeding your birds.

Dogs always find their way back home too. Maybe dogs might be more feasible?

This post is full of fail.
-
Even if it wouldn't really work, the thought of it possibly working made me chuckle :D
-
pigeons know how to fly back to their home
carrier pigeons are designed to carry letters, not packages so i'm guessing very low weight
and dunno about you but i don't trust a pigeon to handle product at all...lol

What do you think about using carrier pigeons as a shipping method?
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen carrier pigeon?
-
LOL imagine the police intercepting the bird mid flight :)
Seriously though, pigeons were used for thousands of years to carry small articles long distances. It isn't as silly as it sounds.
What would make better sense though is long distance UAVs .....
Think about it .. underneath the radar. Easy to automate. Small profiles so difficult to detect visually ...

[reflexively]
What do you mean?
An African or a European pigeon?
--f.
ps: 80km/h
up to 177km/h for short distances, up to 100 mph
per, oh, the shame, wikipedia
-
maybe not pigeons but what about FPV RC carriers like a multicoptor or plane.
You have a 60 mile range on some planes using UHF and pinpoint accuracy using gps ;)
only thing is weight :(
-
Whole concept reminds me of using a Mandrill...

Hahaha. One time I was thinking how cool it would be if there were a bunch of staff from SR all over the world that delivered the mail to your mailbox in the middle of the night, so you'd never have to worry about CD or interceptions. But this obviously wouldn't work.
-
this is the best thing I've heard all day. Let's implement some of these ideas. That mandrill seems good. Strong, smart, royally sanctioned. Can I get one from SR?
A boomerang may not work. It would just come right back before anyone could touch it. Perhaps a Frisbee. Let's be practical, you guys.
Maybe we can get some Kenyans? I hear they're quick.
-
What do you mean?
An African or a European pigeon?
You'd have to use an African one, as an European pigeon would not be able to support the weight.
This thread promises so much fun...
-
Maybe I will buy an albatross for shipping larger package and two carrier pigeons for domestic delivery's
-
Just make sure they know to stay clear of restricted airspace! Otherwise they will end up as a puff of feathers lol
-
Yes, excellent. For bulk purchases, we could use pelicans.
-

You'd have to use an African one, as an European pigeon would not be able to support the weight.
But the problem is, African pigeons are non-migratory...
;D

The real problem here is a simple question of weight ratios... a five ounce bird, could not carry a pound of herb!
the real prblem would be if there was any seed in the weed the package would be lite
-
I was thinking we could use massive fireworks with an early release system so the package could parachute down the chimney of the customer. Only problem I can see with this is that we as sellers would have to make sure the buyers didn't have a fire on at the time of launch..... Otherwise it's full-proof.

This is a great idea and I think under the right circumstances would definitely work. I researched this a few years back because of the need to get product across an international border. Carrier pigeons only need about 4 days in a new location for that location to be set in them as their 'home' they will fly back to. The thing that surprised me the most was the range, which is around 600 miles. Pigeons have been used to deliver rolls of films to processed, which is about the max weight each can carry. So you would need quite a few of them. Probably would have actually tested this if we didn't think of another way. I know everyone is going to ask, so I will just tell you now. We used a gps device, we looked for cars in country x with license plates from country y, we knew that probably within a few days would be going back across border. We clandestinely attached gps device and contraband to vehicle and then tracked it when it came into country y we waited for the right time and went and picked up our gps and package.

Pretty damned slick... The vast majority of contraband probably makes it across the border without a hitch. Hidden in plain sight.
It would surely suck for the random person who was waived aside to have their vehicle checked by dogs, though. What could they say?
"What? That's not mine! I never saw it before in my life!"

Hate to be a kill joy, but I tried using this as a method of distributing my coke. All was going fine until one day I catch a group of them having a good old session. I mean they were racking lines left right and center. They had even invited some lady friends over to partake in the fun, if you know what I mean ;) When confronted it was like, you pay us fuck all so we just assumed it was a job perk..... No real come back to that ::)
All of this I could handle but when they started to cut my gear with their own "shit" I just had to draw the line. I mean hygiene guys FFS!

Mate I wouldn't be surprised, they were seriously out of control for a while. I still use them when desperate (and on a contract basis only), but I do insist my buyers FE!
What really surprised me was when I received a letter in the mail, from the DPWU claiming one of the little bastards need to go into rehab as they weren't informed of serious issues associated with cocaine. The prick is still there and I am still footing the bill!

This is gold ;D
I heard of somebody using freight trains to ship his weed between towns. When they slowed or stopped he would attach his weed. He was a lazy fucker and didnt feel like driving 200+km to drop it off. He did it for years and only lost 1 package.

On 28 April 2001 IPoAC (IP over Avian Carrier (Avian carrier pigeons) was implemented by the Bergen Linux user group. They sent nine packets over a distance of 5 km.

I would defintely worry about losing my SR package to a hungry hawk or eagle. :D Or a bored kid with a bb rifle.
Reminds me of the message ravens they use in the show Game of Thrones. They like to shoot them with arrows to stop the messaging, heh.

This post is full of fail.
Classic, Im having a hearty laugh myself at the moment

Maybe a comedy catagory should be added and then you could move this thread there lol Fuckin pigeon pmsl ;D
-
RC helicopters. Definitely worth it. A friend I used to have on a local college campus used to deliver with his RC helicopter, but he could only do it infrequently to prevent suspicion. Only when he was very sober but very lazy...
-
Early contender for thread of the year.
-
Although you could probably rig up a UAV to serve as transport, if the payload isn't real heavy and the range isn't too long. I'd be worried about weather interfering with the airborne service, pigeon or not.
-
Good idea. We could also replace the usual communication methods with smoke signals, or drums if in a sufficiently remote area. Weed vendors could burn some of their product in the smoke signal fires, and the pigeons that flew over them would get the smell stuck to them - that'd serve as an effective advertisement technique, as the people who handled the pigeon would be able to judge the weed quality of nearby vendors by their bird's scent.
-
What about unmanned Drone?
Hell, they are already talking about delivering Tacos that way ("Tacocopter")!!
Tacocopter would deliver tacos via unmanned drone
SALT LAKE CITY — The ability to have tacos delivered at their feet is an idea many people wouldn't hesitate to get behind — especially when the tacos are being delivered by a robot.

This is genius!

I say we use the homeless network. Easily the best distribution network know to man. Now, some of them I've talked to believe aliens walk among them. Use it to your advantage... SILK COULD EMPLOY THE HOMELESS HAHAHAH VIVA LA REVOLUCION!!!

If the Armory vendors were to adopt this idea, would the deliveries be considered ICBMB (Inter-Continental Ballistic Migrating Birds)?
