Perhaps, it is because I am a little paranoid, but I suspect the sole reason the feds aren't strongly opposing the legalization of marijuana isn't because it is mostly harmless.
The government is still a supporter of prohibition practices. What are they doing supporting the legalization of a mind altering drug? I think it is likely that they are hoping for a more docile population. Especially with the new direction the government is going in. (they're going to need it).
I wouldn't expect them to legalize it outright from the start, but the way it is being legalized now would be a nice cover up for the real intentions.
Any thoughts?

Sure weed helps people be more docile. I don't think it is going to keep people blind or acting on what the government is doing. They just know it's a losing battle for them.

There's a lot of money to be made if marijuana were legalized. Considering our current financial situation, govt officials would be wise to take notice

Indeed!

I think the federal government opposes weed because, in general, it reduces people's work performance and productivity. (I know, I know, a lot of people saw they smoke some sativa and get all energized, but I doubt that's the majority. I'm making generalizations.)
Meanwhile they fast track Adderall, Ritalin and antidepressants which increase the workforce's performance.

I think Mary Jane isn't openly accepted by the government because of what MJ could enlighten people to.
I don't mean gateway shit either. I can see the citizens who are open to MJ, be more open to other uncustomary things, not only substances but ideals and outlooks?
Enough perspectives change, the perception changes?
This make sense? Idk. I'm thread hunting.
Peace

There is more money to be lost if marijuana was completely legalized. It is the sole reason that it was made illegal to begin with. Money. Nylon was just invented and hemp was much cheaper. Look into the history of the company DuPont and the people Harry Anslinger and Andrew Mellon.
Anything that can be made from oil can be made from hemp. Fuel, oil, plastics etc. Pharmaceutical companies cannot patent a plant that anyone can easily grow by tossing a seed into dirt. The government largely has their hands in oil and pharmaceutical money.
It's all about the Benjamins baby.

Truth is there are major divides in local/semi-local/ & federal as to how the direction should go. AND, the money is on the Feds legalizing weed within 4-6 years. Where the feds go, so go the rest of the country! Follow the money!!!
All the tobacco companies will be right in trying to get their piece of the rainbow/pot of gold, but it will still take 6-10 years to start getting to the point of the "legalized companies even starting to come close to replicating the quality of what is currently available! DUMBASSES!!!

So much is ALL about following the money! In the last 400 years, it has taken the US half the amount of time to do what took the English the 400 years to do! (turn our "government" over to bankers)

I live in a (yes the !!) country where drugs like cannabis/weed/hash, mushrooms etc. is free (sort of).
Sold in shops -coffeeshops- and whoever want to buy and smoke can do that completely free.
The idea that your government maybe have plans to make you docile is preposterous....
Here nobody is thinking different or let them do what they (government) want.
We can smoke all we want...
The only problem is the kids...they are in school and often stoned what of course is not contributing to their learning abilities.
That is a matter of raising them with responsibility....
So, from an experienced user in a -very- free country....they will not legalize it to make you docile :-p

Bingo.
When California introduced that proposition to make weed fully legal (not just medical) a couple years ago, after it was defeated, it came out the number one group spending money to defeat it was the alcohol industry.
Any pharmacuetical company would also probably spend a small fortune to keep their monopoly on "legal" presciption drugs.
Lots of deep moneyed interests are set on keeping weed illegal.
Like Stephen Colbert says, "I don't see race. People tell me I'm white and I believe them because I get my drugs at a pharmacy."
