Hey there,
I have been checking for a easy way to have soemthing
secure for communication.
Stumbled over Torchat a while ago and have it running
since then.
Its quite stable/open source/easty to hadle.
It works as p2p using the hiddenservies for handshake and
direct transfer.

Does any of you guys use it ?
What are your oppinions on that ?

It's not the most convenient program in the world, since you can't use regular usernames and it can take as long as 20 minutes between when someone comes online and when you see them as being online. But, it's encrypted, anonymous, and decentralized, so it's kind of my main choice for when I want a secure line of communication.

But you can associate any name you'd like with a person's Torchat address in your buddylist, right?

I've used it from time to time for several months.

Bernd (the developer) does a good job of maintaing the code and responding to feature requests from what I've seen. Tor 0.2.2.32 seems to have helped with handshake speed (although I'm not sure if it's part of the current distro).

There is a new java client coming, you should give a look and help the devs to get it done faster :)

It will have many new features, groups chat is one of them.
What do you think about adding the TorChat ID as profile field on this forum?

is the tor chat maximized zecure ? does he can make a IP leaks ?
off top. does anyone know if pidgin+tor can leak your real IP? I heard a rumor like that and I'm confused as I used it for a while as I thought it can't

Running torchat involves a running a hiddens services. This could make tracking you easyer with documented attacks on hidden services.
If you use Pidgin +Tor there is a good chance Pidgin will leak some infos about you like your user name or host names.
ie user@hostname in your profile / SSL keys
