Title: Europeans: stop imitating Americans
Post by: joywind on June 28, 2013, 07:50 pm
The weird thing about Europeans is how they came to internalize American ethics and imitate them.

The post-war Euros started trying to imitate Americans - while their fathers (like all Europeans before them) looked down on America and Americans. Marxism basically died because the Europeans decided it was too ''European'' and thus staid and reactionary.

I understand people in Guam imitating the Yankees - I frankly don't understand Frenchmen or Englishmen trying to ape America in their politics and their values. It is perverse.

This is not how Marxism "died," but I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong if you have some sources that correlate what you've said.  The fall of the USSR was far more complicated than its population deciding its ideologies were too "European"; that claim overlooks all of the external pressures (mostly American or Western, yes) that led to its collapse.

So you're saying you're better than someone from Guam.  How worldly you are.

I'm not trying to make any sweeping generalizations here but I always remember the foreign exchange students would always say shit like "Americans are dumb fat slobs" or "Stupid Americans" and shit like that so I'd always be like "If you Eurotrash motherfuckers are so superior then how come your countries all idolize us?"  That would always shut them up real quick as they had no response.  Again I'm not trying to hate on Europeans,  I don't really know any and I know they are not all the same just as I am not a fat slob redneck, just reminiscing on my high school daze.

Well first off, We dont idolize you. Your government keeps more tabs on you than any other government in the world. Just because your presidents hide behind fake democracy does not make it real. did you know all presidents apart from one are related by blood ? The obama administration has done more damage to the USA than thatcher did to britain, they just keep it under wraps better.

Technically america is a fairly new country, it wasnt untill 300 years ago ir whatever that white people first went there , And guess where they were from?americans act far superior, however their country is far newer and less settled in tradition. So your ancestors are from europe somewhere. Do you know where?

Now i think we should all be united against corrupt governments, europeans and americans together . Not arguing and fighting with each other, but the people joinign together in places such as this, to form a community that says No to corrupt governments that try to dictate our lives and raise you from birth to be predisposed towards certain things by using both psychology and propoganda.

I personaly love america, the country itself is brilliant, but i dont idolize it, i see no reason too.

I never said idolise. I said imitate. Europeans are imitating Americans - politically, culturally, etc. This has been going on since the second world war.

I would like to reiterate what I said about me actually having no idea because I don't really even know many Europeans.  There is definitely no reason to idolize America.  I just meant fashion and pop culture in other countries seems to attempt to mimic American culture in some ways.  Not everyone and not entirely but there is some truth to it.  Don't ask me why because I think the way American culture is represented is terrible and entirely inaccurate as I'm sure it probably is in whatever country you are from.  I wasn't really talking about people as individuals and I didn't mean to offend you.

Oh no worries at all mate, No offense taken. :)Always good to have a clean debate and discuss international politics.
Well yes sadly where i am from is very misrepresented all the time. The way the cluture is represented is totally inaccurate. I will say this though. In america, The way teenagers are etc is very different to the way we are here when we are teens. For a start i cnt believe you can join the armed forces and go to war, But cant even drink alcohol until you are 21, that is plain ridiculous. The way "house partys" are portrayed is crazy, We did all that sort of thing when we were around 14-18 tops.
There is literally no emphasis on "school sports" here. College football as well has absolutely no status, especially not celebrity like as in some states. The whole system is set up so differently. You would come here and think it was a ghetto in the majority of lower middle class areas.
people leave school at 16 usually and if they stay on its until they are 17 tops, You can get into college from 14 and upwards, and you dont have to have genius status in order to do so.

That is just the main representation of culture inaccuracy that i can see. Im sure there is much more depicted so  far from the truth.
As i said i have a family member who has lived there for not much longer that 20 years, and i have visited a couple of times, Brilliant, it is such a culture change i just like it a lot cant really explain why, probably because it is different.

No of course that is not what im saying, You are pushing everything to the extreme. I could just as easily say to you, Noone watches movies from other countrys in america? No one listens to music from other countrys?
also who says that it is an american style democracy? democracy existed in other countries such as britain a while before it existed in america, that is a cold hard fact. what makes political correctness and capitilism american as well? If anything america certainly is not politically correct, actually it is far from it. Your points make not much sense because people listen to music all over the world, it does not matter where they live, it would be hard these days to avoid american music.

My point exactly.  Musicians and actors (quickly becoming one in the same I might add) come to America to make it big.  Everyone knows our music, movies, celebrities, etc.

the things I mentioned, taken as a whole (not considered in isolation), are distinctively American. Europeans imitate American cultural, ideological and political forms. I could add many other things to that list.

Maybe its just because we're ignorant but no we don't watch movies from other countries.  We listen to musicians from other countries but only after they have come here and have been Americanized.  Its not because we are somehow superior but there is absolutely no denying that American pop culture is much more universally recognized than any other country.

Ok fair enough i didnt know that about you all. Does it not stand though that there will be people who do watch movies from other countries, who do listen to music from there as well, Im not meaning bollywood or spanish or greek, I mean mainly brittish i suppose.

yes of course american pop culture is the biggest in the world, i dont think i could dispute that, and yes some bands from over here in europe try to imitate that because they are wanting to make it big and rich and have seen how succesfull it was in the US, And yes they have fans from here. But that does not mean that the fans and other people who dont even like the culture, Somehow idolize or copy american culture, We where i stay have a very proud heritage and people like to recognize that. They are not "americanized" in any way shape or form. You may be confusing bands copying american bands with the actual population. I notice we ll keep reffering to "the americans" and "the europeans" , well everyone is different and we cant categorize people by which country they are from so we cant say , "all brittish people copy american culture" all americans set the trends", because it is not true. Music right now coming from america, drake, lil wayne, nicki minaj, justin beiber, all that crap that is so mainstream that you are talking about is your culture at the moment, or that is how it is looked at over here at least. Everyone i know thinks it is absolutely terrible. no word of a lie.

If you read any my earlier post you will see that I think our mainstream shit sucks just as much as you.  You will also see I didn't say all Europeans copy Americans.  All I said was what is mainstream in the USA is known everywhere.  In fact I would much rather listen to Britt or Aussie music than 95% of American "music" (I use the term loosely)  I am just saying that what is popular in the USA is generally more popular everywhere else too.  Don't ask me why cause what is popular here is pretty fucking retarded.  I don't hink for a second America is better than anywhere else but I do think that it is more influential than any other country which is not a good thing because the average American has terrible taste.  You don't have to convince me that we aren't any better as Americans cause we aren't, which is exactly why I can't understand why the USA has so much worldwide influence.

Well i reckon its down to america being one of the biggest superpowers in the world, Especially in this day and age, When america wasn't the biggest superpower technology was nowhere near as advanced as it is now so america is basically on the world stage for everything they do. Thats my take anyway

The weird thing about Europeans is how they came to internalize American ethics and imitate them.

I was going to ask you to be more specific however you seem to be referring to movies, music and junk food.  Or am I mistaken?

No you did mention politics...
I am curious as to in what way European countries are imitating the US?  Which ones as well? We're 25 now.
If you're certain about this, whatever it is, I'm pretty sure there's some similarities, after all, you did us a big favor with our World Wars and all.

Come on man, most (can only address myself to white people I suppose) of you people all came from over here.  We are and always have been curious - and often in admiration - of what you did with the "New World".  Why not share cultures now that you've created yours?  I'm just suggesting you look up some European movies or music but you've probably already seen or heard a little.
Just because we dig into the American culture, that doesn't mean we don't interest ourselves in others and that our own cultures are becoming "American".  It's been quite the opposite recently.

This I have to say is sad to hear.  The Marxist movement in Western and Eastern Europe often started during very hard times.  Unfortunately it also led to violence and a lot of blood being spilled.  What you said makes absolutely no sense and ignores several decades of history, a lot of pain and suffering and some much more exciting stuff.

If you would really like to know however, put simply, in western Europe people became happier by purchasing more toasters and cars.  Rising purchasing power made capitalism, alongside a mix of socialist ideals put in place, credible; thus eliminating the need for Communism.  Eastern European countries however, were less developed and the people much more pissed off.  That is why the Marxists fought harder in Russia and the countries around it followed suit, with a little nudge of course.

Personally I don't take any culture/nation as a role to imitate but there are things I like in most. I'm from Europe(Italy, Spain..), but I lived some time in California.
Well, I'm pretty much a party guy. Go out at 10PM and come house at 8AM. Or later. That in the US doesn't seem possible the way I see it, the places close early and the alcohol is pretty expensive. Here is common, my friends and I do that usually.. It's just that way. There is a lot more party. That was a major point back about US. Here I just go out to some place and start taking beers with my friends till 3AM, and I can do it everyday almost anywhere, It's a more "go out". Anyway, this is for Southern Europe that for Europe itself.

About the culture itself US can't fight with the history and development in Europe. It's a pretty new country and doesn't have the cultural heredity that Europe does have. Today it may be the major creator, but It's shit mostly, as there are no artist but capitalist, and that make an art made for the market, and the market is in the center of the Bell Curve. There are exceptions obviously, but the major role of US as a culture creator is Hollywood and pop stars for the layman. Mediocrity at It's best.

About the food.. well, I really didn't dig into that, but I suppose someone can enlighten us here. I personally don't see it being superior by any means. Europe It's just a lot more diverse, different nations, different cultures.. It can't really even compare. It's not some kind of mix-up done by immigrants, they're nations with an history of hundreds and hundreds of years.

Politically US have the best and the worst. I don't like the European socialism and statism but also I don't like how US is turning. At the foundations I take US >>> Europe, but at the state of the art.. probably Europe. Hate some Europeans laws though.

Either way, I like the occidental world the most, and there are a lot more equal aspects than differences. Also, here we are going to make a comercial treatment, and that's how the European Union(or EEC back then) mostly started. So maybe in a few decades.. bah, in a few decades we are gonna being in some kind of cryptoanarchism. Hope. lol

Bye

I have been interested in International Relations for quite a few years now, and I am fascinated by all aspects linguists. I am fluent in a few languages due to my up bringing and studying throughout school, and I would thinking combining the two, especially when you are *the* translator being heard in the ears of those who speak that language, would be very rewarding and be a DREAM career for someone like me. It's like a greeky wet dream! :p

Thing with America is that NOT the people but the ´Government´ lack respect for the rest of the world.
Even Mr. ´Change´ can´t touch the ones living on oil, weapons and information.
We know and got to know some beautiful American people who in no way feel the same as the people leading and representing the country.
And the difference with Europe is that these are all separate countries that they want to make a big United States of Europe so they can do the same.

So it´s best to say that in America (and almost every country around the world) the people who run it don't listen to the people who choose them.
Elections look nice, but you don't hear about the countryrunners when they ALL vote for things the people don't want.
So don't hate on the Americans.

All send hate to the ones who made us dislike one another without knowing them.

Unity to the world (and not as in one government but the PEOPLE)

well where im from, i can tell you for certain nobody imitates americans.
No one watches Ameriacn movies? No one listens to American music? You don't live in an American-style democracy? You don't have capitalism? Political correctness doesn't exist? Etc, etc

Your points make not much sense because people listen to music all over the world, it does not matter where they live, it would be hard these days to avoid american music.
the things I mentioned, taken as a whole (not considered in isolation), are distinctively American. Europeans imitate American cultural, ideological and political forms. I could add many other things to that list.

If Europeans would imitate the cultural, ideological and political forms of America?

Then we would all wear feathers, shoot bows and arrows, put back everything we took and respect the rest of the world...

But still, we respect all people and we can't blame the whole country for a handful of assholes.

Thing with America is that NOT the people but the ´Government´ lack respect for the rest of the world.
So very true.

Have you ever been to Europe? I don't think you could be more wrong.

I don't think enjoying American entertainment is imitation. But it's bound to have some influence. The only thing that's very imitating us is the European Union, and i think that's just the politicians. It's cute watching them try. Really it's the only thing that they should be copying us on. But it's a biggie.

Oh yeah.. that idea totally came to europeans because of the US of A.
All the efforts of Napoleon(and others before him) to have a united Europe..he(they) all had the US of A in mind.
-_-
However politicians method's to gain power are basicly similar all over the globe.
They are a different species;).
Also same applies to them as what i'm about to say to joy next..

Joy..trolololo...i'll bite..

If you can't distinguish subtle things like imitation and  logic evolution of  modus operandi stemming from the desire to aquire money and power you can really stop yapping thinking you are spreading wisdom:).

This is like an inventor being surprised that someone else on the planet or even someone  from another century  thought of the same concept.
Or a labrat in a maze accusing another labrat in a maze of being a copycat(see what i did there;)) when the labrat learns how to get to the cheese.

I appreciate the good things we have in common because the good/interesting things that can be found in america are usually found on a larger scale.
That is also the only REAL attraction.
But i truelly love the big differences too.
That keeps things balanced.
At least over here..

As for things that are similar..
Welcome to the human race..
Many unique individuals yet at the same time anything BUT unique.

You meditate on that;).

I never claimed the idea came from the US. In fact i was going to mention to the thread starter how many of the things he claims are American originated in Europe and how he needs a history lesson but i didn't want to be that guy.
