Okay I really hope someone can help me out here...
I downloaded the gpg4win freeware (kleopatra) and did the tutorial...unfortunately the tutorial uses MS Outlook as the mail program which is not what I want to use...
I did figure out how to decrypt an email by sending my public key...when the encrypted mail showed up in my box...I copied the whole text body to a notepad text file and then used then used kleopatra to decrypt the file...so it is copy and paste into a text file since the tormail client does not seem to support encryption...
The problem now is how do I send someone an encrypted email...?
Would someone like to send me their public key so that I can try to send them a short test message to see i it works...?
my plan is to write a text message in notepad...followed by the user's public key...then go to kleopatra to encrypt the file...and then copy that file into the body of the email message...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Your notepad method sounds like it should work.
Here's my key to give it a try. There is also the Newbie PGP club stickied in this forum if you want even more practice or have any more questions.

Thanks Kindly, Sky...
I just sent you an encrypted PM...hope it works...

Hi topshelf, what I got from you was a big list of strange characters like this:
[ñ‰Vþ#÷S*/ÝÙ6.ÙG@Nà*[ e{ç5~¯áςbuY-·°ÙÖÀÈžÅM¥Pž§±ð/%c$€Ãföyí&PUÞ™0>³eÂ{F¡ÚÞB–%ˆ¦È':aç#ý7´Çì}òÛP•ÿ+#•ˆ‰è:ª.Pí/€ÇWuOSvSÁ8{µäDË?À[ˆ©—çt¤åØáX‡C8…BÙ²í±ÖPœÐà,ÉcpQ…?L¼ÛÝáÞÃ;W9)¢Ê8a÷¬<`9%”ò›+år_Ä”éŸQšÔƒÝj»<<ŽEe-j.fä0ÿ¥î,Ðǯð+nᤢZœ-Ò¬o¾=ètâÑó†7"œƒŠ‡È[af‘óSfúˆö—ÃÞE6±Âáëw°ÜÐ

Did it look like that when you sent it to me? If so then I think your encoding options in notepad are wrong have a look around in your settings, I'm not sure what exactly you need but probably Western Unicode or something like that. If it looked more like a normal message when you sent it to me then the problem is with my browser (although I see other PGP messages fine at the moment so I doubt this is the case). It could be a problem with the PM system. A PGP message should always start with ------BEGIN PGP MESSAGE------- and finish with ------END PGP MESSAGE------- that's a quick way to check if you got it right.
You don't need to PM me by the way, you can post it in this thread, that eliminates the possible PM problems. The point of PGP is that only me and you know what's being said and we both need to get to 50 posts in the forums before we can post elsewhere, I'd rather do it without spamming if possible.

Thanks again Sky...I'm ging to try to post the encrypted message here...

What you're doing wrong is encrypting the msg and key together!
Dont encrpt the key...import the key.
-
Head over to the PGP club they should help u... They helped me get PGP setup pretty quickly :)
-
1.Copy the public key
2.rightclick kleopatra on the task bar
3.click on clipboard
4. click on import
5.write msg in notepad
6.copy.
7.rightclick kleopatra.
8.click clipboard.
9.click encrypt
19.follow the kleopatra instructions from there
-
Thanks Goldenrod...
That's what I did...I copied Sky's public key to a notepad file in text format...ANSI formatting...
I then imported that certificate into keopatra...
I then wrote a message to sky in an empty notepad again in text format...she suggested I start with ------BEGIN PGP MESSAGE....THHEN THE MESSAGE...AND THEN END PGP MESSAGE-----------
I then went into kleopatra and chose file---sign/encrypt files...
kleopatra then asked for one or more files to sign or encrypt...and I chose the text file I wore for Sky...
kleopatra then proceeded to encrypt the file and siad encryption succeeded...
It generated a new file which I called "Sky Test" with .txt extension...
When I open that file it has a lot of funny characters and that is what I posted here...
I am assuming that Sky can now decrypt those funny characters using her private key...?
Does any of this make sense...?

I'm using Kleopatra and it's working fine for me but we're doing completely different things with it.
When I write my msg I simply copy it (i don't paste it anywhere).
Then I rightclick the tiny kleopatra icon on the task bar.
I chose clipboard then when it gives me the next menu I chose encrypt.
It brings up another window asking me to Add recipient.
I chose the public key of the person I want to send the message to.
It reminds me to add myself as recipient and I do that as well.
Then I click okay and that part is finished.
I then rightclick into the email I want to send. Click on paste (as the encrpted msg is now on the clipboard) and it pastes the encrypted msg into the email.
At no stage do I create a file with a text extension.
Try it my way and see if it works for you...it does for me.
Good luck..I know it can be tricky at first.
-
No I can't decrypt that. I meant that the message will start with "-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----" after it's been encrypted, you don't need to put that in your message. Something is going wrong here but I don't use kleopatra so I can't help, fortunately it seems as though a lot of other people here do and can help.
I've seen this kind of problem before, especially with foreign languages and unusual characters, and it's always to do with the character encoding in notepad.
What's your public PGP key? I'll send you a message so you can see how it's supposed to look.
It would probably help to ask in the Newbie PGP Club stickied thread, that way you'll be able to see more messages, keys and get help from people who have probably seen this before.

I'm wondering if the problem is because you're trying to encrypt the file while it is still closed (which I think would produce gagbage instead of opening it up, copying the contents and encrypting those?
-
For SkyofLime...
Okay...I think I figured out the problem...see if you can decrypt this...

Yeah that's working perfectly now. I got your message and can decrypt it fine. You should be good to just copy and paste that into an email when you need to.
-
Thanks or your patience Sky...
the problem was I needed to put a check mark in ASCI Armor in kleopatra...once I did that it all worked fine...
Verdant I have heard good things about pgp4usb and intend to download it tomorrow...
Thanks again guys...what a great community...people helping people...
