What is the consensus on the preferred free email host?
I've heard to stay away from hushmail, and others don't support it.
I've tried combing through the threads for an answer, but TOR keeps it slow and what I've seen seems contradictory.
What are YOUR opinions and why?

Well Lavabit.com was a good choice, but the last time I checked they weren't accepting new accounts (the reason they gave was "abuse"). Safe-mail.net is a good choice -- free and accessible over Tor.

Avoid any provider that requires enabling scripts to use as doing so might reveal your real IP address. Practically all providers on the face of the Earth will comply with a lawful order to turn over their records. If your messages are encrypted then it makes no difference whether your emails are turned over to law enforcement or not.
Be safe.

I'd recommend trying Tor Mail [ jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion ]. It offers SMTP, IMAP, POP3, and web-mail (in non-javascript and javascript flavors). There are instructions for setting up Thunderbird with Tor, for those so inclined.
So long as you use message encryption (highly recommended!), it looks to be at least as safe as anything else I've seen.

+1
Setup Thunderbird with TOR, connect to Tor Mail, and install Enigmail pluging for Thunderbird (after you installed gpg4win) and you're golden!!!
