Title: Someone PLEASE help with PGP
Post by: bnb001 on October 04, 2013, 10:08 pm
I may or may not be a girl. I may or may not be better at cooking up a storm rather than encrypting emails.

I have a mac, have installed thunderbird and the add on enigmail, and after much step-by-step reading and you tube video watching, have successfully managed to encrypt an email to someone BUT it's coming as an attachment to them which of course they won't open because of the risks SO how the hell do I use someones public key to encrypt a message

Break it down, retard-style

Cheers  :)

search GPG4Win, get it from the project official page. Look for the link to the GPG4Win Compendium - it's your instruction manual.

Once it's installed etc import their key to your key ring then you can click 'message' in cryptophane, type what you want, select who to encrypt it to from the keys in your ring, sign it, and it'll paste the encrypted message onto your clipboard. If you're already lost read the compendium from page 1.

*Edit Mac: nvm. Search GPG4Mac and try everything else the same? lol dunno

Screw GPG4Win, it's a Windows piece of shit.  Enigmail is great for decrypting incoming email. For sending encrypted mail, I prefer to do it manually. Use GPGTools to encrypt your message on the clipboard, then copy and paste the encrypted message into the Thunderbird compose window. That is hands-down the easiest way to do it.

When you say encrypt message on the clipboard - which clipboard? In which programme? How to encrypt with someones public key? So if someone says 'this is my public key 'xxxx' please use it to encrypt emails to me' - what do I do with it? Do I compose a message 'xxHi, how are you?xx' so put my text in the middle of the big code they give me?

I just dont get it?  ???

When you say encrypt message on the clipboard - which clipboard? In which programme?
The clipboard just means "Whatever is currently copied with ctrl-c, ready to paste".  So it's not part of any one program, it's a part of the operating system, mac os itself.
How to encrypt with someones public key? So if someone says 'this is my public key 'xxxx' please use it to encrypt emails to me' - what do I do with it? Do I compose a message 'xxHi, how are you?xx' so put my text in the middle of the big code they give me?
I don't use a mac, but the general gist of most gpg programs is
1.  Write an unencrypted message to encrypt
2.  Import the recipients public key into your gpg program
3.  Copy the unencrypted message into the gpg program
4.  (optional)  Add your own public key to the end of the message, so the recipient can message back securely.
5.  Encrypt the message, select the recipient's key to encrypt with
6.  Copy the -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----  text into your email/whatever client and beam it off
My apologies for the vagueness

Sent you a message. So do you need my public key to open it?  :o

You need to PM me your public key and the encryption... You cannot send encryptions to me through the program from what I understand. I thought the same thing and thought encryptions were meant to be sent through the program but after hours of trying to figure it out I had it the whole time.

PM me your encryption and key.

Wha?  :-\ I sent you an email through thunderbird - it said it was encrypted then I PMd you my key. Will this work? Do you mean you cannot encrypt emails to people through an email program such as safemail or gmail?

Ah all this is so confusing. And I haven't even got to buying bitcoins yet.  :o

Nothing gets encypted but the text you used in whatever program you use. The only thing you're using the email for is to carry the encyption code to the person you wanna talk with. Doesnt have to be email, could be a forum msg, a IM msg or hell you could write the code down on paper and give them it.
You use public keys for people to encode the text they want to send to you and vice versa, you decrypt with you're private key that you never gie the password out for.

Holdup I got the email and read the message. I didn't know you sent it through email I was presuming you were going to send it through PM. My apologies and yeah you can send it through email I just didn't know where to look haha.

Send it through PM next time and just copy and paste the encrypted code and we can communicate that way through PM.

I'll send you another one back through PM let me know if you receive it.

If you go to youtube and type in "gpg4win tutorial" the first video that should pop up will be called "How to use GPG encryption". The username of the uploader is Theo8892. Watch that.

Yay so it actually worked through email? Yeah I've no idea how to encrypt/decrypt through a forum.
Highinthesky - is that tutorial for windows? I have a mac which is why I'm finding it hard to find good tutorials that use thunderbird instead of the regular mail application which isn't very secure.
