Title: Bitcoin-QT Question
Post by: Propecia4hr on August 28, 2012, 01:34 am
Earlier today, I deposited some coins into my wallet, and in the meantime, I bought a new computer (Macbook pro retina = awesome).  When I made the deposit, I provided the wallet address on the old computer, but it's not with me at the moment.  I'm not sure how to word this without sounding like a complete idiot.  How can I access those funds from my new computer after installing the new bitcoin client?  I have the .dat file on a USB drive and the address.  Is there anything I can do beyond waiting to send from the old computer?

Propecia4hr, all you need to receive bitcoins on new computer is the file wallet.dat
on Windows computers this file stored in username/Aplication Data/Bitcoin
if your previous computer was MAC of Linux try to locate this file in any way. Irrespective of operation system, this file is portable, you can use wallet.dat from Windows on Linux or Mac and it will work just fine. You should do following - install bitcoin-QT locate file wallet.dat and replace it will file from old computer. Download block chain and you will receive your bitcoins.

file wallet.dat is most important file in bitcoin-QT would be good to have a backup of this file stored somewhere off line.

Thanks, I was able to find the .dat file, but unable to import it.  However, I just sent them from the old cpu to the new.  Thanks.
