Trying to track a package anonymously

A friend of a friend wanted to know if there is a good way to anonymously track a package being sent from oversees. It's not an illegal package or anything, but the FOAF is a fanatic about doing everything he possibly can anonymously, something about "we are legion", idk, he's weird. Anyway, i was telling him he might be able to simply go to a public wifi and use a normal internet browser like google chrome to track the package, that way the IP address associated with checking the tracking just links to a public wifi server. I'm no computer scientist though so i wanted to post here to get some more info so i can tell him.

What do you guys think?

Someone over at [1] had said that somebody in a similar situation were to do this that they would want to use a public wifi that is somewhat far away from the delivery address, anyone know why this would be necessary?

Obviously using tor to do the tracking might raise flags [1], so he won't be doing that.

Best option is to sign up to MyUps if its shipped thru UPS of course. Basically you sign up with your address you use for packages and it alerts you when anything is being shipped to the address and you dont have to put any tracking numbers or anything in. If drugs were to be found you cant be caught on tracking the package due to plausible deniability.
