I'm new to using Tor. 2 years ago a friend suggested I use a VPN client to better protect myself.
Is that still needed? Or is Tor secure enough to connect?
Thank guys.

Can anyone recommend a good semi inexpensive VPN service ?

VPN is not needed. If you are paranoid about your ISP seeing that you are connecting to Tor then connecting to Tor through a VPN will protect you from your ISP being able to see the Tor connection.
I set up a router to have two wireless access points. One access point is my normal everyday connection. The other AP sends/receives all traffic to/from the VPN. I start up TAILS and have it connect to the latter AP before it can connect to Tor.
This is completely unnecessary but I did it for the learning experience and I like the idea of hiding every single trace of my dubious activies from anyone.

You should have a VPN weather or not you use Tor/DNMs. But with Tor/DNMs, definitely. There have been articles coming out recently about how some tor exit nodes are compromised and are stealing people's btc right from their wallets.
personally i always use a vpn becuase i download torrents/moveis ands tuff too.
for something thats 6 bucks a mont (i use private internet access) its wel wortht eh money.
