Does anyone else remember the discussions on this very subreddit when the Carnegie Mellon researchers pulled their conference talk on this subject? It's a bit tin foil hatty for sure, but I definitely remember certain voices in this community insisting that it was surely nothing, nothing at all.
Kinda wondering about those accounts now. If anyone can find the threads they'd be a good read today.
Edit: Here's an example. Some of the more interesting comments and accounts have been deleted. https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkNetMarkets/comments/2beo4k/researchers_lawyers_blocked_our_black_hat_demo_on/

As someone who lost a SIGNIFICANT amount of money when Silk Road was taken down (my fiance had died a few weeks before, so I just left a butt-ton of coins on there, as I not only sold chems but traded in bitcoins), I'm OK with this.
When you take part in these sort of enterprises, you have to expect law enforcement to do as much as possible to take you down, and they have way more tools in their shed. You gotta respect the other side, otherwise you run the risk of being taken by the ankles as you try to stand tall

might be a stupid question but if the FBI skipped having CMU crack the anonymity for them and did it themselves instead, would the FBI need a warrant in that case?

Something tells me under the table they received a lot more money cause think about How much of a hard on it gives the government to bust people that think they are undetectable (tor users)

If this is true the evidence against SR2 is in serious jeopardy. The FBI cant use these advanced investigation techniques because they would require a warrant. So by hiring a few straight edged compsci nerds to do their dirty work (Carnegie Melon is known for their Comp Sci programs and being very very establishment with tons of gunners wanting to waste their lives away at google.) Which allows them to wash their hands because it was a third party coming to them with the information which does not trigger the need for a warrant.
If they gave them funding however in a quid pro quo or some other type of tacit arrangement the judge could rule that they were agents of the government. It is a very common practice for the FBI to contract out work and they are always classified as agents of the government.
If the judge rules in their favour all the subsequent evidence would be poisoned and they would have to throw out the case.
