Stolen Medical Records

My name is Aaron Sankin. I'm a reporter with the online news site the Daily Dot. You can check out some of my previous coverage of dark net markets here: http://kernelmag.dailydot.com/issue-sections/features-issue-sections/11688/silk-road-drug-related-violence/

I'm working on a story about the theft of electronic medical records. These records--which contain a ton of personal information like names, addressees, social security numbers, and insurance information--can be used by identity thieves to set up fake credit cards or take out fraudulent loans. They can also be used to get free medical care on someone else's dime or submit fake insurance claims and scam money from insurance companies.

The rates of data breaches of this type are increasing rapidly and there have been some reports of cybersecurity researchers coming across these records for sale on dark net marketplaces. I've been digging around some of the markets myself, but I haven't been able to find any of these records up for sale. I was wondering if any of the good denizens of r/darknetmarkets have ever come across someone either attempting to buy or sell this type of information?

There's recently been some buzz in the media about the trade in stolen medical records on dark net markets and I wanted to see if it's a real issue of if the hype about it has been overblown.

Somebody give this man a star for simultaneously being a reporter and doing some proper research. It's much easier to simply rehash the information reported from other "news" outlets. I commend you for your effort; please know that it goes neither unnoticed nor unappreciated (despite perhaps being slightly underappreciated).

This is actually the first I've heard about stolen medical records and DNMs. Like /u/throwahooawayyfoe said, they're more likely to turn up on carding forums. Most users of darknet markets are sourcing drugs.

[14 Points] throwahooawayyfoe:

I haven't personally seen it, although I'm sure it is out there if you look hard enough. It's probably not going to be on one of the centralized marketplaces, though. You're most likely going to end up finding it on some Russian carding forum somewhere.

These guys work with Sabu. I'll just leave it at that.

I do not like articles about dnms , plz fuck off

Be honest, how hard did you actually research this?

[3 Points] None:

It's overblown.

Sure it's out there, but we're simply out to get plants we can't otherwise find out our area. Some call it drugs, but I call it a lifestyle. Some say it's illegal, but I say it's relaxing.

Anyways, you're going to want to make a Jabber account and contact the people who sell it. Get their take directly on it. I don't think I've seen any 'hardcore' criminals around here who actually publicly admit to using such things.

Most of us here just roam around looking for reviews on the next strain to try out.

[3 Points] chodesmokers:

There is that one place where they trade medical records for kiddie porn.

[3 Points] Jobless_Junkie:

I've never seen any stolen medical records in particular, but I've definitely seen stolen identity packages. Mostly on evo, but I have seen some on agora that were taken down very quickly.

EDIT: If your looking for a market which carrys fraud related, hacking items for your report, go check out the new market "TheRealDeal". The URL is on dnstats.net

[4 Points] myDNMburner:

it was one listing which was a scam and they were on evo only, so good luck with that.......dont believe everything your dipshit reporter friends tell you.

[2 Points] Lawabidingabider:

If your information is sourced from reddit it's as good as public knowledge.

[1 Points] Trappy_Pandora:

We're the end users here mostly. If carding vendors are stealing medical records to sell as full identity dumps or make credit cards to sell then the buyers of those credit cards or fulls won't have any knowledge of how those cards came into being, most assume it was basic phishing.

Go to /r/tails and make a TAILS drive, then make an account on a market and ask a fraud vendor where they're getting their products from.

If you'd like to know more, I take bitcoin but this is the most I can say without being paid or becoming extremely snarky or insinuating silly things about you.

By the way, you spelled your name wrong.

You missed the part before Aaron where it should say "I am a Fed."

The last thing I want to see is /r/darknetmarkets in mainstream media. :,(

[1 Points] basshead555:

All this info is going to be on darknet carding forums or the Russian clearnet. Look on .ru sites and use a translator. Becarrful going on the Russian forums they'll hijack your shit in a heartbeat. It happened to me

[1 Points] None:

Although you may be able to find this somewhere way deep in the dark web, this kind of information has been sold before the dark web. It was just more discrete. I don't appreciate people trying to blame the dark web for things that have gone on since the beginning of time. You know there was an actual trade route known as the silk road that sold many so called elicit items from way back before America was even discovered. Don't even think 7lb sweet baby Jesus was born yet. Like a real life fucking Silk Road, hence the name of the first big dnm....yes some sarcasm was intended there. Anyway, give up. LE may get a few of us but we have the upper hand bitches. Go away with your propaganda.

[1 Points] Vendor_BBMC:

I think you might be confusing darknet drug marketplaces and carding forums

[1 Points] Xf3k:

I have access to an unlimited number of medical claims at my job. Hundreds of thousands of claims (maybe millions) and steeling that info and selling it on a DNM would be pretty easy... So I'm sure they are out there.
