This is what drug policy looks like when you vote, at all. Holland likes to publicise their 'liberal' attitude towards drug users, and they do a better job at respecting individual rights than other 'liberal' states but, it stays hypocrite when you dont deal with the causes of drug addiction. Their policy on marihuana is a prime example. Being dutch, meaning having their economy based on the drug trade (think of the opium wars: fighting the emperor of China for the right of selling opium to his people, gains of which flew right back into the government treasury), the left wing kabinet legalized the sales of marihuana in the 90's, taxing the fuck out of it, thats why prices didnt drop, following the footsteps of their merchant traditions. Equally traditional was the decision of not making drugs legal in the constitution. Contrary to common believe is that the dutch 'opium law' (name of the drug law...go figure their sense of humor...) still prohibits all drugs. Only marihuana can be sold, with a max of 5grams and you can have 5 plants for personal use. This they 'tolerate' not 'legalize' huge difference. So yeah, the Dutch are hypocrites. But, and this is very true, the attitude of seeing drug users as people exerting their individual rights is pretty enlightened in comparison to other countries. Still, not dealing with the root causes of addiction which lie in society itself, tolerating drug consumption which attracts tourists and helps the economy by taxing it but on the other side incarcerrating people for supplying them is contraproductive to society as a whole and fucking hypocrite. Legalizing it would do nothing more bringing it under government regulation which imho does nothing more than giving the state total control i.e. big pharma. Imagine doctors distributing us drugs against anxiety and stress caused by the system we live in. First they cause the symptoms, making the palative cures illegal, making us want them even more, then legalising them, making us think we gained a victory, than administering them whole scale, total control. (Picture of dr evil with his pink in the corner of his mouth laughing evily)

That's absolutely amazing. I doubt the US will ever be like that.

The articles assumption that some street dealer sells china white for the same price as cocaine sounds like bullshit, that stuff's wprth at least double or triple the price of cocaine. Therefor the premise of this thread is wrong. Just saying though.
That's not sane policy. The reason they have to do this is because so many people are dying. Why are people dying? They're buying "cocaine" that's actually heroin. How? Because it's an unregulated industry thanks to being illegal.
The Netherlands isn't showing us sane drug policy, it's showing us another example of how shitty drug policies take lives.
