Imovane (Zopiclone) works really well but you don't want to be relying on it everyday. Exercise everyday. That's the one thing that's made a world of difference for me. Might be a trite advice, but it really helps.

I am a former benzo addict, took my last this past June. Don't know if they've been said already, but I use each of these in some sort of a combination every night and find them to be basically benign as far as side effects:
Hydroxyzine(50mg, can redose another 50mg if needed)
Melatonin(I take 10mg, comes in 2mg and 5mg as well)
5-HTP(100mg)
Trazadone(I use this the rarest, when nothing else is working, I have 100mg tablets and usually start with 50mg)
Hope everything works out for you mr chewygeeza. Edit: oh, and masturbating when trying to fall (back) asleep is very effective! So is eating a banana.

Triazolam (halcion) is good for sleeping. I 2nd the hydroxyzine, not habit forming, 100mg totally knocks me out, 50 mg is great for allergies.

To my experience melatonin actually works and gives a good night sleep not like OTC anti-histamines which make you wake up feeling tired and drowsy, but only if you go to sleep in the next 5-10 minutes after feeling the effect, if not it washes out quickly.
There is an app called relax and sleep, it lets you combine together some relaxing sounds adjusting their volume, worked for me putting it under my pillow in bed.
And then there is busting one inside a sock of course.
Look into and consult with your doctor before potentially using:
Melatonin (Shouldn't need more than 1mg) - make sure it's suitable for vegetarians, or else it's made from cow brain, and nobody likes Mad Cow Disease.
Skullcap (Scutellia lateriflora)
Damiana (Turnera diffusa)
Lemon Balm (Melissa officianalis)
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
Chamomile (Matricaria sp.)
Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum)
Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
Magnesium supplements (glycinate is preferable)
Potassium-rich foods (tomato juice is a great one)
Exercise at least a couple hours before bed
Using a software program like RedShift on any electronic screens you look at.
The elimination of caffeine and other stimulants from your life, done very gradually. Caffeine can have a half-life of 12 hours, which means you're going to bed with half of your morning's coffee still active. If you make your own coffee, start swapping a small fraction of your grounds for decaf, and titrate your way to 100% decaf over no less than a few weeks. Then get off the decaf, too (some of it can still be fairly caffeinated).
