After Paris Attacks, Proposed French Law Would Block Tor and Forbid Free Wi-Fi.

After the recent Paris terror attacks, the French government is proposing to forbid and block the use of the Tor anonymity network, according to an internal document from the Ministry of Interior seen by French newspaper Le Monde.

To stay on topic (for the sake of the trolls): how will they be able to order Drugs then? See, the US Government use state actors and manufactured terrorism to continuously strip away Citizen's freedom. This article is one example. Toodle-doo.

This is a bigger problem than you think. A lot of Tor relays are in France

Did anyone here laughing at the "block Tor" part in the title actually read the fucking article?

[...]

As for how the French government might enforce a legal ban on the use of Tor, it may be possible for an internet service provider to tell when one of its customers is using the anonymity network (although the ISP cannot see what sites the user is visiting.)

This proposed law would make it illegal to use Tor, and your ISP can tell when you're using it if you aren't behind a VPN. The majority of people here already do the bare fucking minimum like use TBB on Windows, and even order on Android and iOS. You think anyone is actually going to get a VPN?

But yeah. If this law passed and LE wants a warrant to search your place, they can use the fact that you use Tor to get that warrant.

FREE WIFI IS FOR TERRORISTS wtf

Looks like a popularist move that will never eventuate.

The French are the least likely to put up with a law like this as they are about the only western country that when they are unhappy about something actually back up what they say with action.

I have always admired the French for that.

Also by passing these laws, it erodes the freedom of the French, actually "erodes" should be replaced with something a little stronger and what this does is proves that acts of terrorism directly impact negatively on the population of where the attacks occur.

It is such a shame that western governments use tragedies like this as an excuse to increase the control they have over their own citizens. I bet they are rubbing their hands with glee at what they can get through when the next attack occurs.

None of these laws would actually prevent an actual attack of course, they would just use different technologies, stolen credit cards to buy wifi credits at airports/cafes & at the absolute worst do what the rest of us do, hide in plain site.

See, this is a prime example of how the terrorists are winning the war. With every attack they are stripping our freedoms. The attack in San Bernadino will see politicians gun grabbing.

block tor good luck next thing they will block is wow and ps4.

can you please post an actual link?

Block TOR ....lol good luck.

"escargot, my car go, 160 swiftly..."

Remember when a Russian company took the Russian government contract for blocking Tor, failed and found itself in a "bit off more than they could chew" scenario?

Can't see that happening in France, but also can't see them blocking Tor. Ramping up their cyber crime catching efforts is another thing though.

[insert low pitched French snail-like laughs]

It's amazing how a terrified population acts. Willing to trade liberty for security. This is exactly how countries end up with dictators.

[2 Points] 5ynapse:

I love the fact that those who supposedly were behind these attacks used fucking Skype yet the government wants to crack down on Tor and encryption. Typical reaction from a government looking to strip privacy and civil liberties using the war on terror as its excuse. Yawn.

[2 Points] None:

how will they be able to order Drugs then?

with great amount of mild inconvenience, they'd have to use a VPN to connect to Tor

[1 Points] ipeefreely21704:

How can they block tor?

What is stopping terrorists and other evildoers from using email and PGP encryption?

If this happens what's going to happen when those relays in France go dark?

[1 Points] None:

This just makes me think the DNMs wont be around forever so it would be ideal to stock up on as much as possible in case they ever go down and also to find good vendors and just take deals off market via email and pgp

[1 Points] young_k:

VPNs, TorBridges, relays, there's tons of ways to get around government censorship.

This discussion made me finally sign up with a VPN service (PureVPN, Hong Kong based and filesharing allowed). Enough is enough.
