Monero (XMR) FAQ

Thought I'd do an FAQ as I see a lot of people on here have the same type of questions (understandable it's relatively new tech for us) so hopefully I can answer a few of these. For anything I don't cover feel free to leave a comment and I'll do my best to answer :)

How do I buy and use Monero?

Do I need to run my XMR wallet on TAILS or can I run it on my normal OS?

Do I need to send from clear net wallet then to TAILS wallet then to the market?

Can I send XMR straight from the exchange to the market / vendor?

Should I run a full node (download the full blockchain) or connect to a remote node?

How much do transaction / miner fees cost?

Where can I spend my XMR?

How to turn XMR into another currency / use it at a tumbler?

Anything I haven't covered please let me know and I will do my best to answer! :)

Before using ShapeShift.io's services, please consider the fact that ShapeShift's CIO is an advisor for law enforcement groups and a member of the Blockchain Intelligence Group. ShapeShift also publishes all transactions (amounts, times, currencies, etc.) on a public API, and you should expect no privacy from ShapeShift for various reasons.

There are several ShapeShift competitors operating. Examples (sorted alphabetically):

/r/DarkNetMarkets does not endorse nor make money from any of the above services.

Alright so running a remote node via a tor daemon address on monero nodes website. It says "synching" and I see the blocks slowly going up but how long does it take?

I'm not trying to download the 40GB blockchain over tor, I just want to be able to use my wallet straight away over tails via remote node. How do I do this?

I was told running my Monero wallet on a regular OS is bad OPSEC is this not the case then?

Please note that the market 'Agora Reloaded' has absolutely nothing to do with the original, legendary DNM 'Agora'. Agora Reloaded is trying to leech off the reputation of a market they are not at all affiliated with.

Please remove the ?st= and everything after from the reddit link you just posted. It is used by reddit to track users and could compromise your OpSec too.

Great guide, thanks for taking the time to do it. I wasn't quite clear about the part to do with running a full node. Can you confirm that the options are:

1) Have the Monero wallet on tails, in which case you don't need to run a full node.

2)Have Monero wallet on regular OS and either:

a) Download and run a full node on regular OS

b) Use a VPN and connect to a remote node
