You know how people say "I was from the 70's and you know"...

I know this might be hard to find, but I am looking for the perspective of those from that era. With the availability of drugs via the DNM's, the legalization of marijuana, would you say there is any comparison to the 70's to today? I am somewhat interested in this point of view from both a casual recreational drug user and a non-user. I don't know if I am in the right place.

I am pretty sure drugs are cheaper, of better than quality and more accessible than ever

Dude weed used to suck back then but the acid was apparently flame as hell. Well according to my pops anyway. He doesn't even believe me the shit I have is weed. He had never seen a actual buds before until I started smoking. I thought that was pretty crazy. He said one hit of orange sunshine tho and you could pretty much guarantee ego death type trip.

He thinks today's drug culture is shit tho and I can't blame him. I took him to a dead and co show this past summer and he hated all the wannabe gangsta , wook shit. He said the culture was way more "hard and tough" than he remembered. The in your face pushing of drugs and kids crowded around nitrous tanks flipping balloons like their selling heroin in philly really turned him off. He couldn't believe how different the culture of dead shows had become since his last show in 86'.

I dunno if That answered any of your questions but I tried.

I am an old guy now but I can tell you the story of drugs from the mid sixties on. I have always been in the biz until I retired a few years ago. I may have sold pot to your Grandpa if he lived in my area. I have smoked pot for more than 50 years so I do know a bit about pot and many other drugs. I was in San Franciso for the Summer of Love in 1967. I dropped a lot of great acid in those days and LSD was the in thing. I am a musician so I met a lot of people with drugs of all kinds over the years and I was one of the original Hippies. My memories have faded a bit, but this is what I remember:

There was no drugs around until about 1965. There was junkies but they lived in a small part of the city and kept to theirselves. We mostly drank a lot of wine and beer and my friends were all biker types and being a tough guy was in. My family owned property in Mexico and that is where I started smoking 'Grass' about 1965. The people who say pot was weak never smoked the same pot as me I guess. Pot was $200 a kilo and it all came from Mexico where it was about $10-$20 a kilo. It was so easy to bring it home because the border guys had no clue about pot. In the beginning most pot was pretty good. Prices moved up as pot became more popular and since pot was now popular then it became commercial weed and the quality took a dive. Lots of seed and sticks in the commercial weed. Yeah, I would say the commercial weed was the weak shit that you are talking about. There was also qualtiy pot if you knew where to find it.

You never saw any Indica in those days, Sativa was the only pot available and it was fucking great. Everybody laughed and giggled and felt so fucking high. There was shit weed around too exactly like today. I find only about 10% of todays pot is what I would call 'great' and the same was true back then. There is a lot of mediocre pot today in my opinion and you have to look hard to find 'great' pot. I am a connoisseur and I do not waste my time on mediocre weed.

The first really great weed was Oaxcan (early 70's) and it was twice the price of regular weed. I remember saying "Fuck, I ain't payin $400 a pound for weed" but the Oaxcan was so good most people could not smoke much of it. There was Acupulco Gold, Panama Red and many others that I can't remember the names of now. The original Thai weed came on sticks wrapped with a little bit of fibre. There was about 21 sticks to the oz. and it was killer. Cambodian weed was originally grown by monks I was told and it was almost like acid. The original Cambodian was the all time best pot I have ever smoked. Cambodian also became mass produced shit in later years.

When Mexican pot became shitty along came Colombian in the mid to late 70's. The price was now about $500 t0 $800 per pound here. My prices are all dealer prices, consumers paid more. I won't mention Jamaican cuz it was always crap IMO. The first Colombian was all sinsemilia (seedless). Some of the great Colombian strains were Santa Marta Gold and Punta Roja. I had some that was called Black Colombian and you had to be in a safe place almost lying down when you smoked it. It was some of the strongest pot I ever smoked in my life. Colombian also became commercial weed and turned into utter crap as the years went by. Through the 70's and 80's you got a lot of commercial weed smuggled in by the ship load. Some was very good and some was mediocre at best. The last commercial weed I saw was about 1987. I had a friend who brought some Thai in and when he offered it to me I said "no I don't touch that crap" but it was suprisingly good and I did buy a bunch. By the beginning of 1988 there was the 'great drought' as you could not find pot easily since the cops had gotten good at intercepting the imports and they had busted most of the really big dealers.

I started growing pot in 1988 from the original strains that were produced in Holland. There was some really great strains then but they mostly got bred out over time. The 90's was a golden time for me. I grew a wicked strain of Sativa from Nevils Seedbank and people begged me for the stuff. Indica became popular after a while and Sativa waned in popularity. After 9-11 the borders got real tight and the pot biz went downhill, the prices dropped every 3 to 6 months because everyone with a light bulb was growing it. I finally got sick of it and quit growing. The marketplace was/is full of mediocre weed because everyone was/is growing it and the prices are too low to risk everything over.

Pot is quite a bit better today but the prices are low for the grower. I just had a friend over who has a legal grow and he can't hardly sell his pot for $1100 lb., because so many people are growing it. He had 80 lbs for sale and asked me if I could move it, he must be desperate to come to me now as most of my connections are dead, in jail or retired. I do have another friend who grows some wicked Pink Kush which is on par with some of the best strains ever and he only get $1350 lb. He would have easily sold it for $3000 per lb. in the 90's.

I would say there is some very good pot today because if you don't have 'good' pot you can not sell it at all but 'great' pot still sells well. This is one of the reasons you see so much Shatter today cuz people find it easier to sell than weed but the market it getting flooded with Shatter too and the prices are dropping fast.

Edit: spelling Edit:2 Deleted some stuff.

More: I forgot to mention Maui Wowie. I could never get more than a few pounds as it was rare. I recently bought some MW at a dispensary and it was no where near as good as the original Maui Wowie. the original MW was killer. I got so fucked up on a joint of that stuff. definitely the old Maui Wowie was so much better than the stuff they sell today.

Let's see now, Weed was far less potent but it got us high. With nothing good to compare to it was easily worth the $20 for a four finger bag. You just held a baggie up and put your hand against it. Four fingers was an ounce and the only other thing you needed was a frisbee to shake out the seeds. LSD was dirt cheap and potent. You would get 100 of whatever kind for $100. Usually dosed in the 200-300 mic range. We didn't have bars but we did have quaaludes and barbiturates. Rorer 714's and 712's, orange A/Ser's, Seconal, tuinals and nebutals. I remember complaining when ludes went from $35 to $50 a hundred. Speed was real pharmaceuticals except for maybe the white crosses.
Best part was nobody trying to pass of RC's and analogs. You knew what you were getting unless you fell for the guy selling hash that was scented broken up dog biscuits.

I'd say women had bushes, I like shaved pussies muuuch better! weed was weaker. acid was stronger. buying drugs online made things easier.

I remember weed was bought/sold in "Lids"..was usually a sammidge bag full to the top with just enough left to lick the top and flip it over and stick shut. Cost about 30 dollars, a joint was a quarter. And it was almost a totally different drug than whats grown today. Full of stems and seeds,,almost exclusively sativa and never very good(compared to later breeds). One of todays joints probably would have taken 3 or so back then.Occasionally you found some exotic stuff...just an indica usually... and it sold out fast and was a long time until you found something like it again. Cant say where this was due to opsec, but not on the east or west coasts..might have been better options in those places. I cant smoke the weed grown these days.. gives me panic attacks and extreme paranoia, sucks to be me. Acid back in the day ,one hit of purple microdot had me on a 36 hour rollercoaster ride I didn't particularly enjoy so don't know why I did it a dozen times or so. Always made me tense every muscle in my body and grind my teeth til they ached for weeks...but Id laff my ass off the whole time.
