Why are so many vendors using protonmail all of a sudden?

Requires java
Javascript - theres a pretty big difference.
It also uses app manifests and service workers which negates a large part of the Javascript risk since you can save the app on first launch. It strips a lot of mail headers (which users on POP/IMAP + desktop dont' consider) and the built in PGP support is OpenPGP - an open source project that is reasonably well audited.
Ideally you don't use email since it leaves a lot of metadata behind - but Protonmail handles a lot of the threat risks well for a free and web based provider and it's hard to argue against it being one of the better/best options.

You could always use PGP with proton.....but my opinion is that most of these reddit "vendors" use proton because it's the most known right now to do their attempted DD scams.

There is no limit to sending emails per day unlike tutanota. That might be one of the reasons

It's an established service that even regular people are starting to use. Your mailbox contents are encrypted so your emails cannot be (easily) subpoenaed. Someone would have to compel them to subvert their own service to get your passwords and that would have to go through Swiss court.
You should remember to always PGP. Protonmail can do automatic encryption within their own email service but emails sent across different email services should be considered plaintext. Research how SMTP works for further explanation.

Create the account inside a virtual box and use it with a logless vpn that you pay for with tumbled coins?

It can encrypt inline and they also offer a great VPN service. Interface is nice. Pricing isn't too bad. They are based in Switzerland.
Like you said, though, using proton to send to other proton users is the best use case.

LMAO. If you havve a better encrypted mail service Im sure they would use that.

LE??
doesnt matter if they encrypt proton to other providers. you can still just PGP.
