A tribute to SilkRoad 1

Two years later? Three? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era -- the kind of peak that never comes again. The SilkRoad in the early 10s was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run... but no explanation, no mix of Listings or Vendors or Community Forums can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and online in that time and that corner of the darknet. Whatever it meant...

Darknet Market history is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of "history" it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole userbase comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time -- and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. lf not across the Cannabis Section, then up the Stimulants or down the Psychedelics... You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic cryptoanarchistic sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning...

And that, l think, was the handle -- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of law and order. Not in any blackhat or cyberwar sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and encrypted wave...

So now, less than three years later, you can go up on the listings in Agora and check the items, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- that trade volume where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

See you in space, Dread Pirate Robert...

Somebody butchered Hunter Thompson's "wave speech."

I hate whatever this is.

What's the general consensus? Would this have happened if Ross didn't think of it first? Was DNM destined to be a reality at some point and Ross just got to it first or did he really create an entire industry?
