career fields that deal w/encryption & security

I know this question is better suited for a different sub but it gets talked about enough here and this is the one I read so I'll ask here first. Im about to go back to school again.Ive been studying opsec a lot lately since i started dealing with the markets and i really enjoy it. my question is which computer/IT field deals with encryption/security/etc the most?

One thing is fucking sure any area of IT now deals with encryption and not some DES3 bullshit. Find technology area you prefer and get into securing it.

Factoid - I worked for major airline reservation system and 25 years ago you didn't even login!

If I were you, I would enroll in whatever your place of education has their CIS listed in. From there, you can branch out into the parts of the field you really like. If you are dead set on encryption stuff, cryptography is probably where you want to go. But there is so much more, dont limit yourself from the start.

Just an fyi. Don't expect to start in a "security" field right after school. You will most likely start out as a system admin or network admin then after you have experience you can start considering specializing in security. Also, be aware that IT work is high stress and not only long hours, but odd hours too (think night shift and the occasional 24-36 hour days)

Do it man, the DNM is causing me to switch fields also. It's so annoying to always have to worry about OPSEC.

the CS program at my university has a major in Cyber operations which includes hacking. you are required to take classes that teach encryption as well. We had to do PGP by hand (the key numbers were much lower than 2048, our p and q were on the order of like 43 and 17)

Information Security. Whether you intend to seek CISSP certification or not(it's $$$) I would highly recommend you study the Common Body of Knowledge(CBK) used for CISSP certification.

Here's a cool way to learn about stuff without going through books and boring lectures. If you have some knowledge in coding, try solving these challenges one by one. By the time you're done you'll know more about practical cryptography than a lot of people who just learn about it in school. It doesn't replace a real CS degree of course, but it's a fun and easy way to see how crypto is done and what happens when it's done wrong:
