Can someone kindly explain to me the basics of how VPN's work, and how to use them correctly to ensure proper opsec?

Hey fam. I've posted alot here before but had to switch up accounts. Anyway I realize I can research this myself but I would like to hear specifically from users of the DNM's about how to use VPN's correctly, and how they work in general. I found a VPN service I really so far like, my trial ends tomorrow and I'm gonna subscribe. There are options such as "Use P2P" and "Use Double VPN". They even have an "Onion over VPN" option. I've never used a VPN before, except once as a trial where it was really simple and rudimentary. I have 3 separate internet connections currently that I can use at home, if that helps, so I have the option to switch things up a bit I guess? So heres my main question: Let's say I connect to my wifi; meanwhile my VPN is connecting as well. My real IP connects to wifi first, then when the VPN connects, my IP changes, correct? So doesn't that mean that at my IP is revealed, even for a short time, which kind of ruins the whole anonymous thing? I mean, what do I do, connect to the VPN first? That's not even possible right? Also, I noticed that when I'm connected to the "onion over VPN" service that I cannot access most clearnet sites (which I'm not really suprised about). Can someone explain the whole theory behind this? Finally, what would be the best option for posting here on reddit if I were to decide to reveal something potentinally personal and or incriminating (not that I am planning to)? Thanks to all who contribute.

What are you hoping from your VPN? They don't provide anonymity, your VPN provider knows who you are if you connect to them and/or if you pay them with anything remotely traceable. VPNs only provide confidentiality.

Tor provides anonymity when used with clearnet. Tor provides anonymity and confidentiality when used with a hidden service.

Make sure you learn about the caveats with Tor, like phishing attacks (VPNs don't help you there), and if you register an account firstname_lastname, your anonymity is lost too.

use custom DNS's (search it) Use firefox and disable WebRtc with a plugin (leaks peoples ip's) You should check if your IP and DNS are leaking. They have websites for that Install firefox plugins that block trackers and ads , (uBlock, Disconnect) Install a plugin that changes your user agent. Maybe install noscript if you don't mind the extra hassle of not having Javascript enabled all the time

Edited: don't use google

I would only trust VPNs from privacytools.io, also this question would be more suited for r/privacy r/privacytoolsIO or r/VPN as VPNs are not recommended fro DNM use. What VPN are you using? If it doesn't have a kill switch I wouldn't use it which prevents IP leaks.

onion over VPN

I wouldn't trust that shit at all.

Tor.
