What happens to a package that's to big for your P.O box?

I doubt it gets marked return to sender but do you get called or do they leave a note in the box? A related question, would a 5x5" box be suitable for small orders of pills (<100) and RC's?

They usually just throw them away if they don't fit.

Some post offices have lockers and they'll just slip a key your box. Others will leave a slip for you to pick up at front desk...

I just turned my PO box into a mini Tardis. It now has the room for many elephants.

Lol ignore that guy who said they throw them away.

I get packages sent to my PO box all the time. I get the smallest one because its like $16 for 3 months or something like that. When you do this, they put your package in a bigger box, and put the key in your PO box.

Now, if you buy a bigger box, it may come in handy because once I had to take a slip up to the counter to get my package. No big deal, but it means I have to go when they are open, and I have to talk to an employee. But I'm pretty sure they just give you a slip if there aren't any empty boxes to put it in.

My post office stacks them in a back room. You get a green(?) postcard that says,"you received a package to large for your box. Retrieve it at the front counter." You wait in line and hand card to postman. He gives you box.

Your postal workers eat your package like cookie monster eats cookies. Or you get a yellow slip and have to shit bricks collecting it at the counter. I prefer to just pay for the largest box and work with vendor to make sure it'll fit.

EDIT: My local USPS locations do not offer the locker option.

This is why I get the largest box available; no concerns about interaction with employees and available 24/7.

officially it will go to dead letter office and you can file a formal claim with the postmaster to get it. but some shops just open and split the contents, it really depends on the location.
