Using Raspberry Pi

Can I use a rapsberry pi with a wifi adapter to connect to networks other than my home network and use it solely to order from. I would be removing all sources of power before taking it home. Would this be a viable option instead of having to pay for a vpn

What's wrong with Tor?

Yes. A raspberry pi (1 or 2) is extremely useful for physical opsec.

Boot up the pi. Install tor browser and other software as needed and worst case, just throw it away.

This isn't addressing the same threat model as a VPN does. It is likely overkill for what you need, but to answer your question, yes, you can do this. You'd be fine just using Tails.

So, war driving with a pi?

The best way to use an RPi for this stuff, in my opinion, would be to set it up as an Isolating Tor Proxy, which is then paired with a laptop that's used as the workstation. This is essentially what Whonix does, or can do anyway - though I'm not sure Whonix Host will run on a Pi. That way, the physical machine you're working on doesn't ever know its own IP address (only a local LAN IP address). This is also the kind of setup that I really feel is a must for any high-profile hidden service.

It's important to make sure your firewall rules are up to snuff - for instance, this FLAWED, DANGEROUS tutorial on making an "Onion Pi" - essentially Adafruit's guide on doing this with a Pi - doesn't set any of the netfilter policies (controlled with the iptables commands) to DROP, as they really must be. With their setup, all UDP traffic will still be relayed out, non-torified, and there may be additional problems with it (they kind of play it fast and loose with the rest of their netfilter rules, too - relying on conntrack, etc.).

Note that this kind of setup will require the Pi to use two separate, physical network adaptors - perhaps one wired, and one wireless - in order to segregate the two subnets.

The workstation should ideally be a well-secured GNU/Linux or *BSD system that isn't used for any other activities, starting from a totally clean (or Live) OS. For certain threat models, there may also be some benefit to removing any hard drives that the workstation has, or even discrete graphics cards (if it has onboard graphics). Unfortunately, using an un-modified Tails live system is not ideal, as it will route Tor over Tor, which in addition to greatly slowing the connection and wasting the Tor network's bandwidth, may in fact have a number of negative security implications.

TL;DR: set shit up with Whonix with a supplemental workstation laptop.

Any questions about this stuff, feel free to ask.

Yeah, stick Tor on there, and have a portable Tor router. The problem with that is that whatever computer you use may still leak identifying information. That's why everybody recommends just using Tails. Or were you talking about also using the Raspberry Pi as the computer, in which case that's probably ok, although you'd want to check what information it has that could identify you.

I've purchased a raspberry Pi 2 model B+ with a long range wifi adapter for this exact purpose. IT'S SO FUCKING SLOW. Dude, save yourself the time energy and money and go another route. If you're still interested though, I used Raspbian with a 32 GB storage USB, a long range antennae-style USB wifi adapter, and a WIRED keyboard and mouse (I don't trust that an attacker couldn't get to my Pi somehow through the wireless keyboard/mouse).

Mmmmm......rasberry pie...garggggghhh

Yes. But you would need a screen, keyboard and mouse. A paid-for VPN is a weak link compared to the free, anonymous encrypted chain of VPNs that we call TOR.

Take an ordinary-looking windows netbook to the library instead and boot it from TAILS.

Just buy a cheap lifetime VPN...

I got mine for only a dollar.

Absolutely useless unless you are a drug dealer...
