Newbie needs some help with tails on mac

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to verify the downloaded ISO image using GPGtools as described here https://tails.boum.org/doc/get/verify_the_iso_image_using_the_command_line/index.en.html. It is worth noting that I am not exceptionally computer literate so if someone could take the time to explain tails installation step by step like I'm 5, it would be much appreciated!

Edit: And I did check the noobs subreddit. Was unable to find anything helpful to me.

You can not boot from a usb using a MAC. Sorry. The usb stick does not have the proper hardware to do it. You would have to format the stick using a special mac partition which would render the ISO useless.

Another option is for you to try rEfit. You can partition your mac to set aside a small section to install the Tails. Then when you start your MAC, you will get two options, Start MAC or "Windows" I think, even though it is TAILS.

Problem - if you use rEfit, you will not be able to use FileVault and full disk encryption which is baaaaaadddd. You hard drive could be removed from your mac and read using any other mac on Earth without Filevault.

What I recommend is to use full disk encryption with Filevault first. That will encrypt your MAC. Then you can download VirtualBox and install TAILS as a VM and use it normally that way.

If you want more info, just ask.

I don't have a Mac, so I can't give you a tested solution for it, but I've been told that the gpg command line tool is the same, so this should work:

Open a command line window.

Import the Tails signing key:

gpg --recv-key 0x1202821CBE2CD9C1

gpg: requesting key 0x1202821CBE2CD9C1 from hkps server keyserver.cns.vt.edu
gpg: key 0x1202821CBE2CD9C1: "Tails developers (signing key) <tails@boum.org>" 55 new signatures

(Direct link to Tails signing key if the key import above fails for some reason. Import key into gpg. https://tails.boum.org/tails-signing.key )

(Direct link to the Tails signature for the ISO if you do not currently have it downloaded. Save it to the same directory that the ISO is located in. https://tails.boum.org/torrents/files/tails-i386-0.22.1.iso.sig )

cd to the directory where the Tails ISO and signature are located:

cd yyy

gpg --verify tails-i386-0.22.1.iso.sig tails-i386-0.22.1.iso

gpg: Signature made Sun 02 Feb 2014 04:00:06 AM MST
gpg: using RSA key 0x1202821CBE2CD9C1
gpg: Good signature from "Tails developers (signing key) <tails@boum.org>" [unknown]
gpg: aka "T(A)ILS developers (signing key) <amnesia@boum.org>" [unknown]
gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature!
gpg: There is no indication that the signature belongs to the owner.
Primary key fingerprint: 0D24 B36A A9A2 A651 7878 7645 1202 821C BE2C D9C1

The warning just indicates that a known Tails developer didn't directly hand you the signing key.

You can also do a SHA256 checksum on the ISO to see if it matches what I get and what the website indicates it should be.

sha256sum tails-i386-0.22.1.iso

fe5727a4e56c1d8824c9fb4ad0aada9ee7a137336159859103881a25f1a398b5 tails-i386-0.22.1.iso

(If you do not have the "sha256sum" command, try "shasum -a 256 tails-i386-0.22.1.iso" instead.)

The SHA256 checksum is here: https://tails.boum.org/inc/stable_i386_hash/
