All I know is the cops will never get in trouble for something like that.

"If you were expecting these packages and would like to claim them, please come to police headquarters."

Yeah let me just stroll down there... "Hi, I'm here for the weed!"

[24 Points] RosyPalm:

The mail is officially delivered when it arrives at the proper address.

The person that lives at the address is the official owner of that mail.

If they give their permission for LE to open that piece of mail, then it is 100% A-Ok.

Stop using other people's houses for drops!

[18 Points] oh_no_five_oh:

The package was delivered to "Joe". Joe opens the package and sees 50lbs of weed. Joe didn't order any weed and knows weed is illegal. Joe calls cops and turns the weed over to them.

Absolutely nothing illegal here.

Wtf

$100,000 worth of weed is worth driving I'd think

[6 Points] shitterplug:

No. Perfectly legal. What probably happened was the people who received the package, opened it, found the pot, then called the police.

[5 Points] Theeconomist1:

No, b/c the illegal search and seizure applies to LE opening the pack themselves. But if a private citizen finds it and contacts LE, then no, a warrant is not generally needed. And no, its not illegal if someone opens mail on accident. Its illegal to steal mail. This comes up from time to time and there is a misperception on what constitutes felony mail theft and that sort of shit. So unfortunately, if your pack is misdelivered and a neighbor opens it up and calls LE, there is no loophole, get out of jail free card, aside from the usual shit you can claim (plausible deniability for instance).

[2 Points] None:

Policed have so much power these days, why are you all hoping these medieval laws will save you?

[2 Points] JburnaDNM:

What dumb fuck sends 50 pounds to the wrong address?

[1 Points] 1ReviewReviewer1:

The package was addressed to the person who opened it. Whats illegal about that?

Now if it was addressed to someone else but accidentally delivered to the person who opened it as the wrong address, that might be a different story

[1 Points] PathlessDemon:

It's not illegal, someone called about a concerning large pack delivered to their house and it was a investigation.

Did they have to clear it through the local post-master? Most probably, but shit like that where it becomes a found "illegal substance" in a mass amount as that tends to go wayside anyway because then it gets forced into a full investigation. No doubt the DEA will step in too for a hand in it since it was a large singular drop.

[1 Points] Infinitopolis:

I'm sure that the defense lawyer would have difficulty convincing the judge/jury to forget about the cannabis while focusing on improper search and seizure. The primary root event for the police, however, is a parallel construction. They can't open the package, find cannabis, then say they opened it because they knew there would be cannabis in it.

[1 Points] TripAddict:

Yes it is. USPS and cops will need a warrant to open any package.

[0 Points] fatgirlchaser69:

what i don't get is why they would notify the cops, i would take a peek inside and then keep it all for myself.. like if a package came my place i would assume someone just messed up my name with someone else they knew but it was meant for me

[0 Points] octomarvel:

Coulda been 50lbs of dildos.
