And is there any danger in using the more popular tumblers like Bitcoin Fog?
How well do tumblers really work? It seems like a lot of big scammers are found out by following the blockchain.

I asked an expert about this.
If you see somebody putting money INTO a tumbler, and its quite a large amount, you can follow it through.
But a tumbler is designed to HIDE WHERE THE MONEY ORIGINATED, FROM IT'S FINAL WALLET, NOT WHERE ITS GOING TO.
If you put 3 BTC into bitcoin fog, somebody's else's 3 bitcoins from last week tumble through. Yours stay put.
That can't be beaten.

Not saying i scam, but i just use agora or another darknets inbuilt tumbler for security.

You could check the taint analysis on blockchain. Problem is you are breaking one link, but also picking up dodgy coins too possibly.

if you're making small purchases, the built in tumbler like Agora works perfectly fine.
Can you point me to someone that has been found using the blockchain? The legendary SMP chase led to an exchange wallet, where most chases seem to end up. Get the bitcoins to an exchange, make a few trades between BTC/XBT and USD, or throw some other cryptos into the mix to further anonymize, and you've disappeared.
