What do you thing about Telegram?

Sorry about the piss poor title, its obviously down to the lack of Meth.

I know it sounds stupid, but this messaging company Telegram promise open source and verifiable end to end encryption when you are using 'secret chat'..

They claim to create a key pair and messages sent can only be decrypted by the user to whom it is sent to.

Now obviously not enough trust to be used by a kingpin vendor moving keys, but what about small time drug talk (hey what are you scoring for the weekend?) that you should avoid on facebook or whatsapp or text or phone calls?

What are the cons of using this kind of service?

use signal by open whisper systems instead. Secure end-to-end encrypted sms with a ton of other cool features such as no screenies on the recents list and a passcode, etc.

Telegram isn't secure. Use ChatSecure or Xabber, they both use xmpp over tor with otr chat.

Edit: I should probably elaborate on why telegram isn't secure. The messages aren't encrypted and the provider can read them. You can't verify a contacts identity, plus if you past keys are stolen your conversations aren't secure.

Would really like someone to give a semi-detailed overview of how these apps are encrypting our msgs, and why some are safer than others
