Don't just encrypt your disk and call it done, use encryption for compartmentation. Use encrypted virtual machines for single purposes. Your passwords on one encrypted VM that gets used for its purpose and shutdown again, your wallet in another, your trip reports and ledgers of what friend owes you what in another. All encrypted with different passwords with coded names. Use them briefly.

You need to disguise your computer as something else. Maybe a pile of elephant dung, or a tesla coil. It's your choice.
This is depending on your OS. I would say the most secure way to use a PC for the DNM's is to use Tails on an encrypted USB.
Assuming you are talking about hard drive encryption, you have a few options. First of all, you can create an encrypted file container using TrueCrypt. You can also choose to encrypt an entire drive. The project has been discontinued but you can still download the last release and the software itself offers some very secure encryption algorithms.
You can then store files on your hard drive or file container. Use a very secure password. You could also add an extra layer of protection by adding multiple file containers with different passwords.
You could also use bitlocker but make sure this is not the only thing you use. Reason being is it is closed source and we have no way of knowing if there are any backdoors. TrueCrypt recommend it on their site but we can never be sure.
