Life sentence

Fucking despicable. Harm reduction a "magical fantasy"? Bullshit, never before have people been able to access drugs with a 99% guarantee they were getting exactly what was advertised. The "War on Drugs" is an absolute failure. You know this, I know this, everyone that doesn't have their head up their ass knows this.

Take a street dealer out, two more pop up in their place. Take a market out, five more pop up in it's place. This will be a never-ending battle with no clear winner, but we're proving a point by continuing to use these markets. We want what we want. We should be able to do whatever the fuck we want to our bodies without some bureaucrat telling us otherwise.

To Judge Forrest: Kindly go fuck yourself and that high podium that you sit at.

To Ross Ulbricht: What you did might not have been right, and you've made mistakes. But people are behind you and what Silk Road stood for.

[149 Points] AliceBTolkas:

The officer who choked a human being to death over unpaid taxes on loose cigarettes won't spend a minute begin bars...and Ross gets life. 2 life sentences. Jesus Mary and Joseph Stalin, WTF

Blaming Ross Ulbricht for people overdosing on drugs bought from #SilkRoad is like blaming peanut farmers for people dying of nut allergies

[104 Points] None:

thank you for being a pioneer, Ross. thank you for your courage and your fight for freedom.

without you, I probably would have never inquired into, nor been able to safely access the very psychedelic medicines that saved my life from depression and potentially suicide.

I appreciate you and commend your efforts. This is devastating. I am not a religious man, but I just said a prayer for your strength. I wish you god-speed.

May the universe rightfully bless you, brother.

[70 Points] PistolMcDaniels:

Making an example out of someone is the most clear evidence of not treating them fairly. Laws are supposed to apply to all men equally, so saying "give him life instead of what he deserves so it sends a message" is fucking preposterous.

[66 Points] thromeawayfar:

everyone just needs to keep making orders! spread the word as best possible without breaking opsec! fuck the feds! this makes me sick. LIFE!! this guy is a fucking revolutionary i dont care what anybody says. fuck you judge forrest!!!!!!!

[33 Points] she_owed_it_to_him:

Judge Forrest was appointed by Obama but nominated and suggested by non other than Senator Charles Schumer who was the original one crying for SR and the like to be shut down.

This judge had prejudice against the defendant from the beginning and his fate was already sealed. Just look at all the denied motions and evidence presented by Dratel.

This "trial" was a farce and I knew all along he would get as much as they could throw at him. Also as someone pointed out, "making an example" out of someone is not justice, it is abuse.

it is likely this will cause more problems then it will solve but that's the US government for you. Either ban it, tax it, throw money at it, or bomb it. Answers for everything

[31 Points] ikozehh:

Years from now when the war on drugs is over, Ross will be recognised for the work he did. He will go down in history as someone that pushed for our freedom and he wont be forgotten. The sentence he has received is sickening, killing someone in a drunk driving accident for example will bid you a far shorter sentence. What is the best way to support him/ his family? Any donation links available?

[25 Points] venicerocco:

That judge is a nasty piece of work.

[25 Points] ugandariches:

“I strongly believe my son would still be alive today if Mr. Ulbricht had never created Silk Road,” said one father whose 25-year old son had died from an overdose of heroin,

Statements like this make me angry. Your son was 25, he was a fully grown adult who knew what he was doing and was responsible for his own actions. It's no more Ross's fault that he died than it is Tylenol's fault for the thousands of people who die from acetaminophen induced liver damage.

And beyond the two parents who spoke at the Friday hearing, it pointed to six individuals who it claimed had died of drug overdoses from drugs purchased on the Silk Road.

Millions of dollars of drug transactions, kilos upon kilos of heroin shipped to thousands of people around the world, and they could only find six overdose cases attributed to the SR.

I never really liked my country, but today is one of the days that I can truthfully say I'm ashamed to be an American.

[23 Points] sozzZ:

We should stage a protest. Peaceful, non violent protest somewhere in NYC or DC just with signs and some information. What an outrage. I've never been politcally active or motivated by anything in the justice system but this is an egregious error. We should not let it stand--the appeal is DOA--we need to let our voices be heard.

[22 Points] kidhumbeats:

Looks like Doxxing the Judge only made her more angry after all. Maybe wasn't such a good idea.

[20 Points] l0rdishtar:

Fast food has killed more people than Silk Road, and that's just in the last 60 seconds.

[15 Points] None:

Shit - America , you are evil. Evil!

Imagine how much better off we'd be if we prosecuted the real parasites and corrupt thieves who run things? Why aren't they taken in to court and smashed to smithereens as easily?

Remember all the parasitic British MP's who stole tax payers money to buy garden furniture and lamps? How come they weren't sentenced to life without parole and every single penny they owned or will ever own taken off of them? Different countries - same parasites running things.

[17 Points] pseudocoder1:

In August 2014, Forrest dismissed a price-fixing suit against Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, and Glencore. She held that, although the defendant's actions did affect the aluminium marketplace, the plaintiffs failed to show the defendants had intended to manipulate prices.[13][14]

10 minute break before #SilkRoad sentencing, Ross Ulbricht just gave the judge a final tearful plea for leniency.

[11 Points] BrentIsGod:

This will never stop till we all get off our asses and fight. How long do we sit on our asses while these worthless scumbags lock us in cages for profit. It's a war. They want a war. When does the other side fight back against the tyranny?

[11 Points] baseballdude81:

If he moved to Norway, he would have gotten like 6 months.

[9 Points] sozzZ:

just to add, on top of the extremely harsh sentence--more than even the prosecution was asking for--they slapped him with a $180mm fine also. just to totally screw him permanently. I'm so mad right now at the justice system- truly a dark day for all of us on this sub. can only imagine how sad and alone Ross feels right now :'(

[9 Points] None:

Be very aware, folks. This wasn't a fair case, it wasn't intended to be.

The internet is the biggest threat to our government, in the age of information. Whistleblowers are punished, and now people who are competing financially with the CIA drug dealers are punished as well.

A murderer can get a decade, a pedophile can get nothing and an actual drug dealer sometimes avoids a year. But the Silk Road? That was making big bucks, and it threatened the people in control. That cannot be tolerated, so we are meant to take notice of Ross. Don't fuck with us, they say

[5 Points] auto587643:

How stupid of LE and the American justice system. This will not be the end of deep web markets at all, the balance of power will just shift from American/Western to Eastern, foreign based ones from Russia, Eastern Europe, East Asia, etc., where the money we spend goes to support deadly organized crime groups there and brutal regimes. I don't even want to go into details about DPRK Deep Market and where the money goes with them...

We did the same with the American Mafia, cutting out the natural born US citizens through relentless prosecution. Now the biggest groups in the US are Los Zetas, Cartel del Golfo, Sinaloa Cartel, MS13, Russian Mafia, Chinese Triads, Yakuza, 'Ndrangheta, etc. All these groups are far more ruthless and violent and all of them send the money they make back home, with their governments usually getting a nice cut.

Great job Western LE, you're just pushing the balance of power towards the shadier, more fucked up DNMs that are all based in rival nations. Don't bitch when this eventually comes to bite you in the ass.

[5 Points] J0NJ0NES:

In her statement preceding Ulbricht’s sentencing, Judge Forrest fully sided with the prosecution against the defense’s “harm reduction” argument, arguing that the Silk Road vastly expanded access to drugs. “Silk Road was about fulfilling demand, and it was about creating demand,” she said. “It was market-expanding.”

The above is very illustrative that judges in the US are profoundly ignorant to the detriment of their ability to adjudicate. She's essentially weighing in as some kind of expert in economics. But even a first year economics student would understand that DNM drugs are "substitute goods", not "complimentary goods". Essentially this means that the pie doesn't grow, it only gets partitioned differently due to competition.

Say you have a set of 10 drug users who buy drugs off of the street. Introduce the DNMs and the set may grow to 11, but now you have only 4 drug users buying drugs off the street and 7 buying off of DNMs. That's six drug users who are now using a safer source, the very definition of harm reduction.

I'm not aware of any serious study that supports the idea that DNMs have increased, with any significance, the number of people using drugs.

[3 Points] Modziw:

I've been in shock all day. All day. Today my heart is broken. My mind is spinning thing this young man's life is over, finished. This is worse then a death sentence. Barring child pornography, I am almost positive this is the harshest punishment anyone has gotten for something they did on a computer. Just thinking about it makes it seem utterly surreal. A double life sentence? My heart bleeds for this man and his family. I wish nothing but the worst for this "judge". What a fucking .. christ there is no words. Ross was one of the coolest, sweetest, and most intelligent persons I ever had the pleasure of communicating with. I'm almost twice his age, and I was certain I was chatting with someone in my age group. To think it was a kid in his 20's with such a worldly wisdom and practicality about him, such a talented and creative young man.. being thrown into a cage FOREVER? FOR FUCKING EVER? Even the prosecutors were probably shocked by this. This bitch judge did not hand out JUSTICE by ANY means. She made an EXAMPLE out him (or so she thinks).. that is not fair, that is not justice, that is not humane. I hope Ross finds the fortitude and strength to endure this tragedy, I hope by some miracle (an appeal, a pardon, drug laws change and charges are overturned, whatever) he breathes free air again in his lifetime. I hope the prosecutors, I hope people like Jared Deryagan, Chris Tarbel, Carl Force, etc.. and especially this cunt Forrest.. God I hope nothing but the worst for them.

Today was a black day. Ross Ulbricht/Dread Pirate Roberts/Silk Road changed the world. Thank you so much man. It's a shame none of us couldn't do anything for you.

[4 Points] Delusion_Of_Adequacy:

The judge repeatedly referring to Ulbricht as 'privileged' sounds an awful lot like SJW logic. In general, I feel a judge should refrain from deciding whether someone is 'privileged' or not, but should focus on upholding the law with an impartial mindset.
Yes, Ulbricht broke the law, and knew he risked prison doing it, and I don't think it's unfair he's going to jail. I do think he's going to jail for way too long, and the judges remarks on privilege make me feel like she wasn't impartial.

[3 Points] None:

Ross Ulbricht was dumb enough to try to have a stranger kill another stranger...

But DPR was jittery, and he’d noticed that his trusted admin had been offline for a few days. A Google search revealed that Green had been arrested, and DPR suspected he would flip. Moreover, he got a message from another employee, Inigo, that $350,000 in bitcoins had just disappeared from various accounts. Inigo quickly traced the theft to Green’s admin identity. DPR went into crisis mode, communicating with his confidants, scrambling for a solution. “This will be the first time I have had to call on my muscle,” he told Inigo. “Fucking sucks.”

Moments later, DPR messaged Nob that he had a “problem” in Utah that required violence. According to the backstory Force had created for Nob, his criminal repertoire included enforcement and collection talents, so he acted the part. Sitting in the Marriott, Force received a PDF of the target, opened it, and discovered a scan of Green’s driver’s license photo. Then he looked across the table, where at that very moment Green was half-asleep. Well, this sure is an opportunity! Force thought.

[3 Points] Itsonlymeffs:

What an absolute joke. Shame on America and it's so called "Justice" system. Life in prison for creating a website that took drug dealing off the streets, along with giving drug buyers a rating system to buy drugs with a feedback system to increase the safety of buying drugs.... LETS FACE IT... people are going to buy drugs regardless... the internet takes a away many risks and I believe Ross has saved many more lives than were lost from his endeavors. The United States sentencing is a friggen joke... I have seen people gets years for an once of weed.... Here in Australia a first time offender would get off with a warning or suspended sentence.... This trail epitomizes the USA's love of sending people to prison for drugs.... WAKE UP TO YOURSELVES USA AUTHORITIES... The war on Drugs will NEVER be won....a change in strategy and harm reduction far outweighs the easy "send everyone to prison" mentality... it's PATHETIC. Shame on you America. Wake the fuk up.

Life is a fucked up sentence, and I pity the guy but.

Asking to be able to spend the last 1/4 of his life as a free man was a risk and, because of media attention, it backfired.

We have tried to protest peacefully only to be tear gassed and pepper sprayed. Judge Forrest and all the other traitors to the constitution; It's only a matter of time before your life is taken for the many lifes you have stolen.

[1 Points] damnmachine:

Fucking railroad of a trial. That jury clearly gobbled up all the prosecutions bullshit and asked for seconds.

If a site like silk road was created, but wasn't hosted in the United States, nor did it keep any of its proceeds or assets in the States and finally, its operator/s weren't US citizens or in the US at all, could the persons responsible still be prosecuted in the USA?

Just wondering.

Forrest rejected arguments that Silk Road had reduced harm among drug users by taking illegal activities off the street. “No drug dealer from the Bronx has ever made this argument to the court. It’s a privileged argument and it’s an argument made by one of the privileged,” she said.

I'm so ashamed of my country today. I understand Ross wasn't perfect but people rarely are except in the movies. I think this is disgusting, given that people who rape children get less time. Remember the Wolf of Wall STreet? He stole about 200 million dollars- not for liberty but just to enrich himself. He destroyed countless lives and got less than 5 years. This country is insane. I used to be what you might call a patriot- a believer in the 'land of the free' bullshit. Not anymore.

[1 Points] free-my-nigga-ross:

Hey ross stay strong we're here for you.

[1 Points] aCitizenofRome:

They will wish they had executed him. He will serve as a Martyr for the DNM community for the rest of his life. However I feel his sentence will not stand the test of time and will either be reduced in the future or appealed.

[1 Points] Svstem:

I would've preferred him getting executed instead of getting life for his own sake. Spending the rest of your days in a federal penitentiary when you're only 31 is worse than getting killed.

[1 Points] inoathingor2:

It's outrages and sad. In comparison: The guys that started Utopia and were also vendors or mods on BMR were sentenced to 7 years in the Netherlands (7 years was the highest sentence, some got less).

The USA "justice" system is a cruel monster with many victims in the belly of the beast.

[1 Points] fainting_g0at:

Honestly I think she is a terrible judge and this whole process has been bullshit. Ross was fucked the second they had his laptop.

[1 Points] Modest_McGee:

Does anyone know where Ross is being held? Would it be possible to send him letters or even pay a visit? Would he be able to reply to letters sent? Ever since his arrest I have been dead set on some sort of exchanging of words. This guy is going to be in the history books as the Che of the internet age.

[1 Points] OFCwhite:

They made an example out of him. Such a shame.

[1 Points] FloydDankweather:

They fucked Ross over simply because he kept drug usage the same, if not increased it across the world, and probably reduced the amount of deaths that could have happened, and overall violence.

When theres no statistics, and people are enjoying drugs safely, certain agencies and organizations wont need as much funding anymore. Hank Schrader needs to finance to his new truck somehow!

Their parents were neglect and that's what happened. And now, stupid sites and media spreading news everywhere about the sentence, let's bury it, no need to tell stupid people what really exist or not so things like this won't spread so far.

BULLSHIT. Like Aaron Schwartz, DPR was a pioneer for the potential of this medium, digital information. And the results are the same: 2 geniuses taken in early life for making this digital topography exciting and understandable to masses. Look at the other side of the coin. When Napster created a Billionaire boy, nice milk toast, TAX paying node. And the feds, LE, negative media and the like, only have taken things away; unfortunately, 2 lives. People will complain of the people it 'hurt'. We all know there is a LONG learning curve to even entering the DNM places. Takes research, timing, luck and sometimes finesse to even try to do a transaction. It is not easy. Public opinion and critics make the DNM arena as being a place where one can easily attain whatever illegal things they want. I know that most, if not all of the haters have no clue just how difficult this place is to access and walk, not crawl. Shame on you US Fed system. You are the reason we still live in dark days of life; the DNM world in particular. Taking your laws, your rules, to the international digital playground and making sure everyone, because they 'fear' succumb and bow to US pressure. You let people like Sean Parker live, breathe free, get old and become a billionaire. You killed Aaron Schwartz and in theory DPR too. Be strong Ross, you are and always be, a pioneer and icon in this new digital landscape. This place where fascism is still in effect via the US Federal system. The US fails in the middle east trying to force democracy on them. They, by this ruling let us know that Hitler has risen from the dead and become our Federal system. No freedom, only one ideology and the strong arm of this court system to 'control' the world. The US is still short sighted on how valuable you are and were to the furthering of life. They only mean to stamp out and control everything they can't gather taxes from. Always the money. You are relevant and a genius. I am sad for this ruling. Believe in karma. I thank you.
