When people get caught, what is usually the reason?

Is it a lack of internet/computer security, where someone is a little too careless with their OPSEC? Is it during the delivery, like the package looks or smells funny? What's the most vulnerable part of the process that the LE usually targets?

The common thread is a buyer telling all of their friends about their DNM purchase.

Snitching is the No1 cause of death. The Metropolitan police paid £9,098,058 to informants between 2008-2013

NEVER have i seen a bust related to blockchain analysis or bitcoin purchasing habits. Only arrests I've seen are package receiving gone wrong (probably by running your mouth too much or getting too big IRL) and straight up snitches.

You know another reason people get caught? Telling on themselves, if you brag to people you get drugs and other illegal shit in the mail, do you really think you can trust all your friends or aquaintences?

People are haters and get envious. Don't tell anyone where you get your shit unless it's obviously someone you know for a fact would be the type to bail you out of jail or some shit because honestly a lot of people can't be trusted even if you think their cool people.

biggest reason for people getting caught or a controlled delivery is informants giving LE information about an operation or individual

Is it a lack of internet/computer security

Surprisingly no. That's not to say you should be lax in that regard but most busts happen through old-fashioned police work and bad luck.

Is it during the delivery, like the package looks or smells funny?

This is more common. Also, as others have mentioned already, people running their mouths about DNM activity and selling a lot IRL.

[5 Points] Theeconomist1:

For now, computer shit is prob more used as ancillary evidence. More than likely investigations are spurred by something IRL. Then they dig and find shit if you have sloppy opsec. Vendor profiling is another or if vendor is compromised. XanakKing comes to mind here. For domestic, it's very unlikely a pack is randomly uncovered in transit. Perhaps ordering marijuana from a legal state might be the bigger risk but that aside, random USPS finds is rare. Also using bad addresses seems to be problematic. Ordering to a vacant home for instance. I've read of instances of this happening - don't think it was necessarily DNM related but same principle of mailed drugs. Finally, most recently there was a very nosy owner of one of those PMBs who opened a customers pack. That's not terribly common but should make you think on using those types of places

Ordering internationally and in bulk is beyond my experience so my anecdotal observations are more geared towards the personal buyer

Law enforfement seems to be a big reason

When a fish gets too big, it has to be hunted down. And for sure, Human stupidity plays an essential role.

Edit:

And never forget a crucial factor a lot of people ignore, GREED.

What is this?

[2 Points] PepperoniDivers:

I'm really surprised how many said it's often from loud mouths. Luckily I am pretty secretive and only order for personal use so I feel a little better now.

[1 Points] DNM_Throwaway1234:

I'd say reselling large volumes and talking about ordering illegal drugs online are the # 1.

[1 Points] Yourconscious69:

Bad vendor packaging/profiling and people getting busted selling on the streets.

[1 Points] rogueXleader:

Yup, it's people who are too stupid to keep their mouths shut. Just because you might stand up to an interrogation doesn't mean your "friends" wouldn't sing like canaries when threatened with charges themselves

[1 Points] hidyhocaptain:

Seems like it's always weed people are getting busted for.

Not joining a Tor Vendor's association is usually a good way for vendors to get caught. They have several in the UK now, and they're launching ones in the US and Canada.

The best cop is their best informant.

Someone wise once said "The weakest link usually exists not between you and your vendor, but between the front door and your mailbox."
