WTF is Khat?

I was reading this article and saw this chart on the most harmful drugs to least harmful and I saw this drug called Khat. Has anyone ever heard of this or tried it? Apparently it's a controlled substance in United States and Canada but I've never heard of it before. What is it and why is it illegal? Also, is there anyone selling it on the darknet?

Cathinone in khat loses potency quickly.

If you reduce ephedrine, you get methamphetamine. if you oxidize it, you get the corresponding ketone - methcathinone. Its a waste of ephedrine compared to meth.

HOWEVER, if you add a methyl group to the 4-position of the benzene ring, you get 4-mthyl methcathinone - mephedrone, which is a great drug.

Buzzy like coke, but doesn't turn you into a jerk. Empathy like MDMA, but less halucinogenic.

It is very common in Africa. You chew it and it supposedly gives you a mild, similar effect that amphetamines have.

The reason you don't see it on the darknet is that it SEVERELY looses potency during the 72 hours after it is harvested. I do remember seeing one of the RCs that are pretty popular are pretty much Khat.

Cathinone, maybe?

It's believe it's common in the middle east, a lot of arabs bring it over but they pretty much keep it to themselves/communities from what I understand which is why you don't really see it much on the street. It containes cathinone.

It's controlled here so we don't see it. Might as well take amphetamines or cocaine if you're going to take an illegal stimulant. Back during Desert Storm soldiers used to love chewing Khat though.

Just like how they loved smoking Spice during the last Gulf War.

I had it last year when I visited Kenya. It was lots of fun. Just a mild speedy buzz. You can drink a ton of beer and chew Khat for hours and wake up feeling fine the next day. It's very popular in Kenya and Somalia mostly. You just chew the plant itself, there's no processing or anything. We chewed it with bubblegum to help with the somewhat bitter taste and reedy texture.
