Can I use this version of Tails safely?

Beyond frustrated in my continued attempts to get Tails to work from a USB made with the Tails installer. Can I use the initial Tails USB made from the USB install utility? Is the only difference that I cannot use persistence? If I save my keys to another USB, I suppose it wouldn't be all that hard to load them in every time. I just need to know if it's secure, and how that might effect my Electrum wallet. Not to mention Electrum requires an update. Does this mean I would have to update Electrum every time I used Tails? Thank you.

Updates are there for a reason, so you should really update. What step are you getting hung up on? I'm definitely no computer whiz, but maybe soemone else or I can help. One thing that hung me up during the upgrade was downloading the update. It shows up in your tor browser folder on TAILS almost immediately, but it actually takes 45 minutes or so to fully download and be able to verify. Could that be the issue? Let us know.

Also, yes you have to update electrum for it to work properly. Here's a link to help you out:

It's the same exact installation only one has persistence, as you said. There's no reason not to use the method you suggested. Updates won't stick because it's like using a live CD, and I'm not sure if electrum has to sync with the blockchain; but if it does, it'll be a pain to do that every time because it takes forever.

I had issues getting persistence as well and I don't remember if I ever figured it out. Make sure your USB drive is formatted to the correct file system, most likely fat32 but I'm not sure. What is your error? Does it just not stick after reboot?

Are you using a cheap usb stick?

If you are, that's almost certainly your problem.

Not sure if you've seen this: https://tails.boum.org/support/known_issues/#index1h2 Make sure your USB stick is compatible. Don't give up. Using TAILS from a USB stick with a persistent volume is the way to go. Check out all the known issues on the page. Hope you get it figured out.

Dont need to update electrum, if you want to send a transaction download the electrum package, untar and run from there. wget https://download.electrum.org/2.5.4/Electrum-2.5.4.tar.gz && tar -xvf Electrum-2.5.4.tar.gz && cd Electrum-2.5.4 && ./electrum

if using a FAT parititon that last command should be python electrum as it wont have an executable flag.
