This is purely speculative, but I wonder how many gag orders, subpoenas, and search warrants have been served to Reddit.com for the personal information of the users of this subreddit?

Whether the admins are into drugs (role playing, of course) or not, I'd like to think that they wouldn't willingly hand over personally identifying information of its user base. However, they can't withhold that info from LE if it is court ordered. It would be fantastic if Reddit adopted a warrant canary, but I imagine with as much info as LE takes from Reddit, the canary would constantly be dead.

Hopefully, anyone who is on LE's radar has the know-how to keep their "dirty" identity separated from any kind of connection to their IRL identities.

The method of keeping the two identities separate is referred to as "Siloing." If you run over to /r/privacy there will be lots of good information on keeping your different accounts' activities separate. This strategy to privacy will become increasingly more and more important as time goes along.

Also, if anyone has any good tips for siloing and maintaining separate identities, please feel free to share.

If there's one thing we've learned in the last few months, it's that we all have to take responsibility for our own safety.

Considering they removed the canary warrant they once had in place in the spring of last year, I would guess site-wide there is a steady stream of subpoenas being issued for reddit and other social media giants.

Does this necessarily mean that it is aimed directly at the DNMs and this sub? No.

I would speculate that with reddit, and it being a worldwide network, there is probably a much greater amount of terrorism-centered subpoenas than drug/fraud related.

There used to be a reddit canary, but it's been dead a long time.

2016 Govt Requests

reddit 2016 Transparency Report

In 2016, Reddit received 170 requests to disclose user account information from US and foreign law enforcement authorities, a 73% increase over the requests received in 2015. The overall number of users affected by these requests decreased slightly, while the percentage of requests on which Reddit produced user account information increased slightly.

2015 Govt Requests

reddit 2015 Transparency Report

In 2015, we did not produce records in response to 40% of government requests, and we did not remove content in response to 79% of government requests.

2014 Govt Requests

reddit 2014 Transparency Report

58% of all government & civil requests

64% of all US state & federal government requests

We received requests from state and local government agencies in 15 different US states.

30% of the civil and US federal or state government requests we received included a court order prohibiting us from notifying users.

In 2014, we successfully fought back against two civil subpoenas that sought to unmask more than a dozen anonymous users.

Gwern, NSWGreat and 2 users claiming to have info on Kimble & Verto, search "subpoena" in this sub only and you should find the story

There was a post at the start of this year/end of last year, made my reddit staff, which had statistics on how many users' data they had to hand over to LE. If I remember correctly, it was in the hundreds range. There were subpoenas and other types of requests they had to hand over data for. I'll try find the post.

Ya I remember the evo ones very clearly. That z-1 guy pretty much trolled everyone including the cops. If your account is subpoenaed I'm pretty sure they have to let you know. Don't they?
