Anyone ever heard from the IRS?

Were all paranoid lately, but this struck me as odd...My best friend called in a panic because he got a registered mail notice in his box requiring signature and asking him to sign at the post office.

The sender was listed as the IRS and it was addressed to both himself and his wife. I'm not sure how many orders he made, but I know it was under 3 and only for personal use. I know this guy well enough to know that he would never sell anything to anybody. And of course his wife was never involved with any of the things that we discuss here.

Thoughts? Probably just an odd coincidence...

If he's a buyer, the IRS has zero interest in him related to DNM's.

If his bank account was being looked at (which it's not), the bank/LE would contact him; not the IRS. No reason to worry...unless he owes back-taxes.

sounds like your buddy owes some taxes! certainly worthy of concern but not paranoia.

It's not going to be DNM related, the IRS wouldn't be the agency pursuing people for such matters.

Maybe they fucked up their taxes and it has nothing to do with DNMs lol

The second biggest thing to fear about signing for! This has nothing to do with DNMs. Your friend probably owes money, didn't file a tax return (they were due last month if you requested an extension for personal returns), getting audited, etc etc. They will send that type of correspondence via registered mail. They want proof you got it. Its general not good news, but on the plus side, won't be getting arrested over it. I've gotten one before a while back when they thought I owed them money. And it came via registered USPS.

I was audited in the 2013 calendar year. I made a not-insignificant amount of money (six figures) selling mined bitcoins, as well as buying and selling them. I continue to make a decent amount of profit as a LBC seller, and I still buy and sell. A microscopic portion of my BTC transactions are related to DNM purchases, probably between 2000-3000 dollars this year. (I use norco... it's expensive)

When they audited me, they didn't remark on the BTC transactions whatsoever. The reason I was audited is because I had purchased an apartment without taking out a mortgage and it was >100,000 more than the house that I sold. Since I am a dual citizen, they saw a disparity in real estate purchase amounts but I used an overseas account to pay the difference between the profit of the sale and the price of the purchase. I am a pretty extreme-case scenario.

However, I had absolutely no problem whatsoever surviving the audit. Even the handful of DNM transactions can be explained as legitimate purchases -- someone repaired your computer and took BTC payment, or even selling the BTC for cash. The IRS does not look at BTC transactions as potentially criminal; they are far more concerned that people use it to launder money, not buy drugs online. Especially the small number that your friend has.

It's unlikely that is the problem, especially since the letter is addressed to both him and his wife. They send registered letters when they see anything they want more information about and it's highly, highly unlikely it has the first thing to do with DNMs. Before getting into a panic, I suggest that he read the letters and see what they say. I would bet my own money it has absolutely nothing to do to with bitcoins, let alone DNM orders. That just isn't how it works.

The IRS communicates via certified mail, even if they just want a form or anything minor, or if they are in a position that they have to make groups aware of a change to the code that affects them. I get a dozen certified letters from the IRS a year simply because I am a non-resident US citizen an my income bracket requires me to file a tax return annually even if I don't owe taxes, just to let me know some stupid rule changed. Have you friend relax and know that it's not correlated to DNM purchases and even if it is, it goes a long, long way from being something that is going to bite him in the ass.
