Addict vs. Recreational User Discussion

I was curious how many people who use this subreddit would self-identify as drug addicts. Do most people here consider themselves regular but recreational users? If so, do you find it easy to not get addicted to whatever it is that tickles your fancy? How much of addiction avoidance is mental, like making smart decisions about frequency of use etc., or is addiction/dependance a physical response of the body, and as such, unpreventable? Would love to hear any opinions on the subject(s)!

First of all, great subjects. I can say I am a consistent recreational user. Mdma one time a month, pills once a month, cocaine once every 2-3 months, regular weed, mxe 2-3 times a month, lsd 4 times a year, rarely dmt, occasionaly benzos. I know it is pretty specific as I am limiting my use only at Friday and Saturday.

I've always been this way though, even when I was not working full time. I also started using drugs really late compared to you guys, like 24 (just my guess, not a biased) I am 30 now. As far as I've experienced, everything is mental (except opioids?). Using drugs safely requires a certain degree of maturity, self-consciousness and knowledge about what you are getting.

Without these, mistakes are inevitable, at least in my opinioin. I am not bragging about myself or anything like that or looking down on people who are using senselessly for that matter.

I like to think I have a very highly addictive personality.

I recent tired meth (smoked) 3 times and still don't really see all the hype of it. (this was local stuff 100$ A gram!! I'm guessing some shake and bake or country lab shit idk if that's good but for that price I'd rather get other drugs)

I even looked at a nice 20$ .5 on alphabay and didn't really have an urge to buy it even though I was looking for something to throw my extra coin at

oh yea but I'm a drug addict for sure, Not really addicted to any one drug but I just like to do drugs

I self identify as a drug addict, opiate addict in particular. I am actually kicking heroin right now, hopefully it's for the last time!

I guess I'm addicted to having a buzz but not any drug in particular. Just quit alcohol on 12/30 and don't miss it. Really only do psychs and every now and then MDMA or dissos. Gonna start smoking weed again after I get a job (or win the power ball).

i have both a successful legitamite and illegitimate buisness the first time my drug use impedes either i would call myself an addict until then im simply an enthusiast however a long time ago i was hooked on meth and simply will not dance with that devil ever again

[1 Points] None:

I would identify as a high functioning addict. I buy opiates when I can and crave them when I don't have them. I consider myself high functioning because

I've been this way on and off for a few years. My dosage has stayed steady, my buys have been fairly consistent, and I've never stepped it up to I/V or snorting. I just have a very expensive pill habit.

As long as a drug/drugs are not ruling your life you are fine. If the ONLY way you can be happy and find enjoyment is through shooting heroin or maybe you feel the need to be barred out constantly to cope with the troubles of life - you have a problem.

Meth is LIFE :-) But, yeah, I do love it, but I only order every other month. I smoke it only, no more rig's for good ole Rorschach!!!! Just placed an order, its been about 6 weeks since my last order for myself. but i have let that shit kick my ass in the past. Now I fly solo, smoke my stuff, sleep, back to my life. Hope this helped, any questions, feel free to hit me here on inbox brother :-)

I consider myself a "functioning" addict. Last year I started doing H because of the reason why most people start doing H; it's cheaper than prescription pain pills. I only snort and a gram will last me 2 weeks on average. I'm not your typical "junkie." I eat pretty clean, I workout 5-6 days a week, I have a great job that's supplemented with a handsome income, and I show up to work everyday on time. When I'm dressed to impress, there is no way you would say this guy does H everyday. But ya, I would identify myself as a "functioning addict."

[1 Points] JburnaDNM:

I think I am what you call a recreational addict aka functioning addict. I have a problem with drugs even when I was in the military and was in charge of a substance abuse program. Oh the irony. My cravings for opiates are fucking intense. I lost 2 marriages due to my addiction and made my life so fucked because of my addiction which only made it worse. I can quit but only if I have a very good reason. Right now I have more reAsons to keep consuming. Addiction is a disease and the struggle is real even if you possess the right tools.

I am a drug addict and I've been a drug addict for two or three years. I've always had an addictive personality I love instant gratification. I also, use drugs as a coping mechanism to deal with life because for some reason I have not figured out regular responses for these problems. Addiction is mostly a mental thing, but it is physical in some aspects. Certain drugs rewire your brain chemistry and change it. These drugs make it so you are more susceptible to them and you crave that dopamine release.
I would say it was easy to not get addicted until I started to do harder drugs. I never had any problems when I smoked pot, rolled, or occasionally tripped. However, when I started Coke and Xanax is when my problem first started. Not to say that one cannot use drugs like those and not develop a habit it is possible. My real demon eventually came in the form of heroin. I started out just snorting dope, but then I moved to shooting up with the needle. Now I shoot almost every drug I do. I am no longer physically addicted to heroin, but when I was it was hell. I would do a lot of terrible things to get my fix and not be sick. Heroin is one of those drugs that rewires your brain. I still struggle with it minorly. I think one of my problems was that I thought I could control it. I remember thinking after I did it the first couple times I didn't get addicted you don't have to get addicted to this drug it's not like that. Then bam you're fucked. All in all addiction is mental and physical. I think you are succeptible to addiction from genetics, personality issues, depression, and peer pressure. I know one of my biggest problems is depression and heroin is a big anti-depressant for me. Just my two cents be careful with what you put in your body and do research on it. Never play with needles.
