Hack a car with it's OS?

So a friend of mine said he found the source code for Ford and Chevy's OS, and he said he could probably mess with a car by changing it, then implementing it in the car. No search engine or torrent site has come up to anything he was talking about. Is this possible, and if so, where can I get these source codes?

This was possible to do to jeeps for awhile, but most cars with discovered vulnerabilities are recalled for maintenance and patched up.

Ask your "buddy" where to find source codes, ain't no one on here going to point you in the right direction.. get real.

If you don't know how to find a source code yourself, then you won't be able to hack shit. Give up on whatever you're considering, this is out of your league.

Sounds like some made up hollywood shit to me.

I don't know about altering the "source code" but you can write to the car's computer on a few cars that I know about, and probably more. I think this is technically changing source code, but not in the way most people think of source code. You're not going to torrent FORD OS and compile it and upload it to the car without stealing test harnesses and tons of proprietary tools from the manufacturer before you could even come close to compiling it.

In reality all they can do is make alteration to the cars computer, in the same way the dealer can usually,

I had a volkwagen that you could use VAG-COM to change bits in the eprom. You could add features that car didn't because the original owner didn't care about being able to open all the windows by double tapping the open button, and didn't buy that option package. Vag-com can overwrite that. VAG-COM also emulated the shop diagnostic tool the dealers have, allowing you(or an independent shop) to diagnose all kind of problems through an obd port.

Even more impressive is the way companies are altering the computer to gain performance by tuning the ECU to match the MAF which gains a few horsepower or a few mpgs on most Fords. I have a tune for my Ford, which was a bit overpriced for the performance gain. But there is a fan made tool called Focccus that allows you to add options that my base model car doesn't have. Like Hill Hold(brakes stay locked on a hill until you reach the clutch engagement point and then release, makes starting on a steep hill easy) I enabled a few other features that I can't remember now.

if these existed, and were cheap enough for us to buy, the manufacturers would just 'buy' the vulnerability so they can fix it
