VPN: is it worth it?

Do you guys use VPN as an extra security layer? By VPN I mean paid services, not a proxy on somebody's grandma's compromised Dell.

I've been trying to figure out what the actual benefit of a VPN would be in this business. "Cheating" your provider's filters by "masking" Tor traffic? But do you trust a VPN operator more than a slow as molasses telco/cable company in terms of actively cooperating with TPTB?

Another question, if you're connecting from a public/broken AP, does a VPN even make sense?

If you are using Tor correctly there is no point to a VPN. Your ISP won't give a shit about Tor traffic, it isn't illegal.

I use a VPN just for my piece of mind (paranoia). The idea of only using Tor just makes me nervous. Especially when SEVERAL alphabet authorities are looking for vulnerabilities. Not only that, but it takes nothing more than the download of Tor to get you on the alphabet's lists.

Might be pointless, but at $100 a year it's insanely cheap insurance. Safely torrent too.

Using Socks is much better than using VPN from my understanding.

So is there any disadvantage to using a VPN and TOR at the same time? And by disadvantage I mean is there any possibility that using a VPN with TOR is LESS secure than TOR alone?
