Which country to VPN from?

opsec question for you guys. when you use a vpn to connect to tor, do you choose a US server or foreign server? the merits of US server, as i probably incorrectly understand it, is there aren't retention requirements in US, so the companies that have policies not to log have nothing to hand over. i could also see foreign countries being attractive because netherlands etc seem to have better stances on privacy in general. and also the fact that snowden is hiding in russia might mean that, if it's good enough for snowden, it probably is good enough for me. but then there's the fact that the nsa is logging internet traffic if some of it is foreign. so what do you guys do?

Server that's not hosted in any of the Five Eyes: USA, New Zealand, Australia, UK, Canada.

The Northern European countries are usually a good choice.
