I was arrested in a DNM case and was just released from prison. Police is still on my ass because of my laptop.

The short story: a buyer got into trouble somehow and told the police where he bought his weed. This was way back in the day where i was still selling offline, like 2-3 years ago. So the police decided to search my house all these years later and found about a mixed kilo of several kinds of drugs, including cocaine and heroin. Mostly it was weed though. So they took my laptop, mobile phone and the drugs obviously and i was arrested and sent to jail basically all within 12 hours.

After almost 8 months detention i was finally put before a judge and because i invested in a good lawyer and probably with a bit of luck as well i got off with a couple years probation.. Being in jail for the first time in my life and having done 8 months already probably helped my case too.

Here is the kicker though. The reason i got off this easy probably also has to do with the fact they "only" found one kilo of drugs at my house.. And they were not able to break the encryption on my laptop. If they did i would do major time for sure. It would show a drugtrade of some multiple magnitudes greater.

They did let me know that they will continue to try to break the encryption. So here is the ham question: what are my odds? Full size disc encryption and the Password is 20 characters long..

If it's your local PD they aren't breaking through any encryption lol

[111 Points] tripandtrap:

I'd bet the real reason you got off with probation after 8 months with weed, cocaine, and heroin is because you snitched. Not because you invested in a good lawyer.

[57 Points] _PrinterPam_:

There are a few assumptions to be made here:

1) There are no flaws, backdoors, etc. to the FDE software that LE can avail themselves of (unknown).

2) There is a time penalty, preferably exponential, for each password entry attempt, for which they have no workaround (unknown).

3) Your password contains sufficient entropy.

If those three assumptions hold-up, I'd say the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor.

EDIT: I should also note that not only is #3 unlikely (since humans suck at entropy), but you also described your situation well enough for LE to put two-and-two together...and just informed the world exactly the number of characters you used for your password. That rules-out an ungodly number of possible passwords they would need to try and infers that you likely used a combination of common words (in order to remember it) with perhaps some variations of casing or transposition of symbols/numbers for certain letters.

[35 Points] guysir123:

How did they get the warrant to search your place?

And a 'kilo' sounds a lot worse than '2lbs of weed and a zip of coke and bags of dope'.

What would they find on your laptop? Tor? A wallet with coin sent to addresses that they can't verify means anything?

[21 Points] TheGhostOfXanxanman:

if your password is really 20 characters long and is not password123456789!@#$% then they won't crack it

[12 Points] Avengerhack:

Quite sure I know which country you were in 'prison' at least judging by the story. From experience and research, at least European law enforcement won't or don't have the 'power' to break strong full-disk encryption, truecrypt etc. If they think the information on the computer is important they will sing you their national anthem of lullabies to pursue you into giving them the access code, or password. One should never trust or listen to what a police tells you, they can tell you there will be no prison, just give us access etc. It's not their call to make and you should not believe them. I don't know your case, but even if you have a kilo in your residence, it isn't enough for the police to prosecute you until they've found evidence suggesting that the drugs belongs to you, or that it was intended for sale by you.

One can simply say 'I kept a bag, package or envelope for a colleague, didn't ask what was in it, but didn't think it was -----, although I understand it may have been wrong not to ask, etc.'

Honestly, vendors or buyers who get arrested lack the knowledge about how law enforcement operates and probably hasn't done any research about their local laws. I've seen only a few good cases where the suspect has came with a brilliant story, even when suspected for kilo's, but only received probation.

Now, I am certain it is a different story in the states, but in Europe, do some research and gain some knowledge if you are doing this long time. It will pay off eventually.

[5 Points] truelai:

You didn't say what you used for FDE.

Also, you just leaked a ton of details about your case that make your identification possible along with admissions of guilt for crimes you have not been charged for.

I'm thinking the strength of your crypto isn't going to be the determining factor here.

[5 Points] None:

Now they know your password is 20 character long.

[5 Points] obnoxious88:

I think they are fucking with you. 1. They don't have unlimited resources / time /money. 2. You won't be prioritised over new cases, new evidence. 3. I would go hard on denial and write a written request saying you want your property back and have served the time for your crime.

[3 Points] boyishsuggestion:

veracrypt

[3 Points] SilntNfrno:

Yeah how is this a DNM case?

[3 Points] AlpraCream:

20 characters is decent, but you still need to worry about side channel attacks that can be done to decrypt the laptop as well.

[3 Points] bubbleboy3000:

You have already been charged. get your laptop back. they cant charge you again.

[3 Points] Crade_:

Can't you file a motion to get your property back? My grandma sued her local pd years and years ago and won becsuse they refused to give her gun back to her when she was arrested for marijuana possession.

[2 Points] Trip-Trooper:

yeah. them wont crack! chill br0!

[2 Points] bigbigsmalldude:

Highly doubt they will break it. Also how long can they legally hold your shit. I would get on your lawyer to get your shit back.

[2 Points] LiterallyNotAShill:

If it's local LEOs then that ish would be wayyyyyy to expensive for them to crack.

[2 Points] PoorBulgarian:

Why keep it at home tho ... like cmon for real 1killo of weed ? Iven if you dont deal with DNM but street deals you know you should never have more then 1oz in ur house.. bury it/get a storage under a fake name anything but dont keep it at ur place..

[2 Points] lurch91:

I'm going to be honest with you, coming from someone who deals with, and studies deeply on the topic with my job:

1: As top comment says, the end of eternity would come close to being the amount of time it would take to solve that by brute force. They won't break it. Now, this is important to note that AI in the near future could impact this majorly and severely weaken, if not destroy the common encryption we use in a logistical finite amount of time.

2: Even if you were "forced" to have over your keys, it is your right to refuse, period.

The EFF has a lot of things privacy oriented people would love to know because it shows the rights you have in these circumstances.

[1 Points] gangsterdam020:

You must be in NL, other countries in EU would bury you with a key of whatever, encryption or not.

[1 Points] 180K:

Oh, I was hoping for an AMA. Shit should be on TAILS though, right?

[1 Points] LieutenantCheeze:

How did the judge not require you to forfeit the password? If you have potentially damning evidence that you can provide why wouldn’t they make you provide it? Seems fake

[1 Points] Babilisss:

Tails? If the pass is not on a bruteforce DB or is not a combination of the words found there then your odds are real good.

[1 Points] DankDanielOG:

What confuses me is why they’d continue attempting to crack your laptop after your 8 months with no success. Seems like a lot of time and money in recourses. I also wonder why it took multiple years for them to search your home after someone snitched on you. Also you can’t be taken back to court for a case you’ve already been sentenced for, but maybe you could go back to court if the laptop situation is considered a separate case but I doubt they will even get into the laptop.

[1 Points] lamb123:

You could destroy the laptop. You'd do time for destroying evidence, but it would be a lot less than for whatever they might discover on the laptop.

[1 Points] Tyrell-WIllick:

If they return your laptop, don't try to access immediately. Watch out for EVIL MAID ATTACK.

[1 Points] princess-peach-uk:

Good on you hun!

As everyone should know its mainly the things you do offline rather than online they will get you caught or avoid punishment

[1 Points] Bidzonflake:

If this was in the U.K. There is no way you would of done 8months. A kilo would be possession with intent to supply....

In any country I highly doubt you would get away with a K of any type of a drug.

If it's found in your possession e.g trouser pocket, car, house you would be done unless you can prove otherwise and that involves snitching.

I think your looking for attention and you got it. Well done!

[0 Points] Keeks__:

I've been binging 2 days now, so i'm already paranoid as fuck. But I was just thinkin, hey need to check out DNM as I found this thread. Yeahhh no, fuck that for tonight

[0 Points] sr0me:

Sorry but there is no way you spent 8 months behind bars without seeing a judge.

[-1 Points] c3ntrifuge:

Well.... depends on the encryption type and password character variability.

I would say not very long considering how long it would take me to break it.

[-1 Points] combatmonk:

BitLockwr or FileVault2?

[-1 Points] 1-ThrowAwayAccount-1:

You all are fucking retarded for believing what is obviously a complete lie. Is that how you people see yourselves? Like you're some sort of online drug kingpin. Jesus Christ.

[-2 Points] Amanda-Binds:

I was arrested in a SWIM case...came out looking like a drowned rat.

Just ask my hair stylist. She buys coke from me ;)

[-5 Points] DickMuke10:

I didn't think they were legally aloud to go through encryption. If it's the feds they won't be very long if they are legally able to.
