Australia: Now is the time to #GoDark

http://www.caleupe.com/writing/australia-now-is-the-time-to-go-dark/

On October 13, the mandatory data retention scheme in Australia goes live.

In late August, Quentin Dempster outlined the scale of information the government will legally force ISPs to collect. The list is extensive to say the least:

For emails:

For Phone:

Online activity and social media:

The list of agencies authorised to access this information without a warrant is extensive, and is not exhaustive:

Australia: use cryptostorm VPN, and the admin of cryptostorm respond to this kind of invasive metadata collection in Australia:

You have been warned.

EDITED: I didn't format it properly, now it's fixed.

Australia! You've just been democracized!

[3 Points] HofmannsHeir:

That's a gross violation of privacy, bad day to be an Aussie.

Oh, it's worse than all that:

187A Service providers must keep certain information and documents

        (1) A person (a service provider) who operates a service to which this Part applies (a relevant service) must keep, or cause to be kept, in accordance with section 187BA and for the period specified in section 187C:

                (a) information of a kind specified in or under section 187AA; or

** (b) documents containing information of that kind;**

Seeing as australian privacy laws prevent service providers from inspecting your communications, that last little bold double asterisked section (187A(1)(b)) means they can't selectively retain only your "header"/metadata info. They'll have to retain the entire document to comply.

Edit: sorry I'm bad at reddit formatting.

Time to get creative and get those smoke signals going! but we are actually fucked...australia, land of the free.

[2 Points] None:

Wait, what the fuck? That's insane, how could that level of spying and just overall invasion of every aspect of privacy ever be passed? I'm sorry, Australia.

[2 Points] juggies:

Australia is long gone. This is just the final nail in their coffin.

Ironic they started out as British prisoners set free, only to imprison themselves again.

[2 Points] seducer4real:

Cryptostrorms website is fukin awesome.

Edit: you should all read " cryptostorm beta review" before signing up.

[1 Points] pumpmaster69:

Does anyone know if actual voice conversations are recorded preemptively? Obviously if your phone is tapped they are recording everything you say, but, what if you are implicated in a crime and they want to hear phone conversations you made prior to the crime. Is that possible? That seems like a ridiculous amount of data to collect

When my mates have gone in and the evidence has been presented to there lawyers its always been text messages among other things that got them (idiots).

Over the past few days the Australian people are going through a shock knowing that their ISPs are now eligible to keep their metadata of their users thanks to the Communication Alliance of Australia.

This is exactly the same made move made by the NSA in the United States, this new law has caused an uproar in the Australian Public and has led them to seeking refuge by searching for VPNs.

This plan is to keep Australian’s from illegally downloading software and movies. But the government has not realized that this move will also risk the privacy of the Australian Citizens.

Australians are now looking for a way out of this and an Australian VPN is the only solution. A VPN will cloak your outgoing traffic and hide your IP which will keep your identity safe.

According to Google trends the Search for VPN in the Australian region has sky rocketed in the past few days. This shows that the people of Australia are smart enough to know whats best for their privacy.

Trends: https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=vpn&geo=AU&cmpt=q&tz=

VPNs aren't really expensive for e.g. PureVPN Costs around $3.75/month and IPVAnish costs around $4.87.

I'm failing to see how this will effect our community besides the government knowing where on tor or a vpn which they do now this just effects ordinary Internet users.
