What if Gwern is working for the FBI

Maybe that subpoena was really serious and he was busted for something and the only way out was to work for them by hunting down Satoshi? Isn't that how they got Sabo to help take down SR1?

Doubt it. Gwern has been around for a looooong time, well before SR1. Just look at all the work on his website and contributions in other subs. He is just a very good and dedicated researcher. In my opinion he should have never wasted his time with the Darknet and modding this sub.

Look, if Gwern was undercover why would they expose him in this article? It makes no sense. If they wanted a story out, they would have leaked it another way, not through a CI or undercover. Highly, highly unlikely. They have nothing illegal on Gwern as he didn't really do drugs and focused on documenting stuff. NOt saying his body of work wouldn't be of interest to LE, but I can't see them coercing him. Just to be clear, the subpoena wasn't on him personally. It was a subpoena to Reddit to expose various information from the logs (IP addys mostly I'm sure).

Has anyone become an expert on Gwern? He has a full website that is essentially his manifesto. You know the feds who subpoenaed the accounts read through every singe PM and comment made, so I want to get an AMA from the dude who had to read every single piece on Gwern's site and made an outline. That would be interesting.

Bollocks. gwern is wrong anyway, if he says satoshi is still alive.

The FBI don't need to employ gwern. he's been documenting our crimes for years and dumping it into the public domain. Not because he's a grass. I think he's just some kind of "rainman"-style savant.

Usually, anyone who documents your illegal activity without good reason, and wears a wire on every marketplace forum is viewed with suspicion, like a man looking under the doors of the toilet stalls in a ladies toilet.

Because its gwern with his basin haircut and pens in his shirt pocket, the girls invite him in to show him how everything works down there. "Gwern for president".

You can take equal scoops of clever and stupid, shake it up, and get me. Try it again, and you get gwern - its completely random.

i don't have the ability to do marketplace "scrapes", I have no problem admitting that. But I also wouldn't do them, for no other reason than because I can.

I could stand outside a crack den with a clipboard and a camera round my neck, but there's something in me that tells me not to which is missing from gwern. Does that make sense?

Similarly, gwern believes satoshi is a living person who has just been very very quiet for a year during the block size row.

I think the recipient of the first bitcoin transaction would also be its sender, between two computers in the same room:-

and for the last 18 months I've been convinced that Hal Finney was "satoshi". I also like to think that satoshi was a good man, without being completely convinced.

Something happened on Feb 6th 2014 on the blockchain, and sometime in April that year 51% of the blockchain copies decided that it didn't. Then the Bitcoin foundation began to tear itself apart, with many good people resigning without explanation.

Are you talking about sabu ? He helped take down anonymous and Jeremy Hammond .

I'm pretty sure Gwern knows how to manage his opsec and his Reddit email account yielded the feds sweet FA.

Maybe I'm just out of the loop here but why would the government be trying to hunt Satoshi?
