I live hundreds of miles away from him, he was still in college and I'm living the real person life now. I just got word through the grapevine that he got grabbed today. Not just grabbed though: absolutely fucked: 2 felony possession, 2 felony intent to distribute, a bunch of misdemeanor possessions and a fucking schedule I federal trafficking charge.
This guy was the most careful person about using DNMs that I've ever met. He had a burner PC, one of those linux partitions that wipes everything upon shutdown, the whole shebang. None of that shit saves you when you're careless in real life though.
From what I can piece together, he and his girl Mholed hard while staying with a bunch of people who don't do drugs and don't know drugs without giving them adequate warning. They (understandably) thought this guy and his girl were in need of medical attention when they were virtually unresponsive, and brought them to the hospital screaming 'OVERDOSE'. They told the pigs that my buddy had all different kinds of drugs in their house and either let 'em search or talked enough that a warrant could be obtained, and the rest doesn't need to be explained.
I'm not totally sure how they got the trafficking charge on him, but I vaguely recall telling him one time not to store his shit in the same envelope/packaging in which it was shipped to him. I'm guessing they saw the goods in an envelope that traveled between state lines, and there you go. Now, barring some sort of miracle, his life is essentially over. He will serve time (hopefully in a federal prison, it beats state at least), maybe serious time, and when he comes out he will not be allowed back into the top university that he was so proud to be a part of and he will be a felon, so any hope easily finding a job or renting his own apartment will be gone for a long, long time.
I'm still in shock, this shit just hasn't registered. This is one of the kindest, most selfless and understanding individuals that I've ever had the pleasure of interacting with. He's never hurt anyone and just wanted to share the beauty he saw in psychs and dissociatives with the world. When we can get shit with the click of a button, it becomes too easy to forget that we still tread the line between enlightenment and imprisonment. Please, PLEASE, don't keep felony quantities lying around. Don't take heroic doses unless everyone you may interact with has a working understanding of what that means. And for the love of FUCK, don't keep evidence of DNM activity in your residence. He was careless, he fucked up, and now he will be paying for it for the rest of his life.
As long as we play this game, we aren't safe. We aren't insulated. When we forget that, we risk losing everything that's important to us.
EDIT: A little bit of misunderstanding: I said 'while staying with' which makes it sound like he was just crashing on people's couch. He was subletting in their house for the summer, and had his own room. It doesn't make the fact that he MHoled without letting people know what that might mean any less stupid, but it's not like he was chilling among them then got wacked out. He was almost certainly in his room, and either wandered out in his state or someone came to talk to him.
It also looks like the trafficking charge may get dropped! His lawyer (reportedly, I'm still getting everything secondhand at best) says he's "confident" that my boy can escape jail time, but that seems so absurdly unlikely to me considering the severity of his charges that I'm taking it with grains of salt. If he does escape jail time, its gonna 100% be because he's an unassuming, well-spoken white kid. Not sure how I feel about that...
All the technology and OpSec in the world cannot negate human error.
