Undercover DEA pot bust leads to drug charge in Cottage Grove
By Scott Wente on Feb 18, 2015 at 9:30 a.m.A South St. Paul man is accused of accepting a 5-pound package of marijuana from an undercover federal drug agent in Cottage Grove.
Prosecutors charged Davis M. Clayton, 47, with felony fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance in connection with the staged drug delivery last year. Clayton recently was arrested on a warrant after failing to appear for a hearing in Washington County District Court.
According to the criminal complaint:
The Drug Enforcement Administration on Oct. 13, 2014, intercepted a 5-pound package addressed to an apartment in the 7800 block of Hearthside Avenue. Law planned a controlled delivery of the package the following day. An undercover DEA agent dressed in a FedEx uniform brought the package to the apartment complex. Clayton told the agent he would take the package because the apartment resident was not home. The agent gave Clayton the package and he put it in his car.
When Clayton was arrested, he said the package was meant for a woman in the apartment. The woman was seen standing on a balcony watching the arrest. When authorities knocked on her door, she refused to answer and yelled from inside, "Come back with a warrant," the complaint says.
Clayton is scheduled for an initial court appearance March 12.
The fact that an actual DEA agent was the undercover man for this controlled delivery is interesting. Often times it is a postal inspector.
