Unbreakable Encryption

Ross claims that if he would have simply been able to close his laptop it would have become an encrypted brick that the government wouldn't be able to do anything with. How is this? What kind of encryption is practically if not completely unbreakable?

No encryption is "unbreakable", it just isn't breakable for the time being (with current technology).

But this is why we have private keys that expire and shit.

Nothing is really unbreakable given enough time. But for all intents and purposes, you can make it mathematically impossible for them to brute force the encryption within your own lifetime. Even if you do so, there's always the chance they'll get it on the first randomized guess as that's mathematically possible in theory as well.

This all assumes the hardware isn't compromised from the factory of course. Or if you're generating rands from a bad entropy pool then you end up with weaker encryption even with stronger passphrases and key lengths.

Ross probably had Truecrypt on his laptop, whole disc encryption. As it is no longer given support, VeraCrypt is the go to program for the same protection brother. Here you go!!!!

That's incorrect. There are many flaws that existed in TrueCrypt, which the government (has recently been proven) has spent a considerable amount of money to gain access to. That being said, for high profile cases, they use these exploits. On a local level, if only the police were involved (i.e. local department), he would of gotten away. When you're talking about a drug king pin worth billions of dollars then you've got the attention of every three letter agency. That could turn into federal funding, or a nice retirement package for the first guy on scene.

PGP. The guy who invinted it was brilliant. He had his body frozen so that in the future he can have some disease he had treated. Google it. While your'e at it, check out Nakamori Satoshi, try and wrap your head around that shit.
