Are airport dogs trained to detect Amphetamine (speed)?

Going to take 2g of dry speed powder with me on a international flight.

It will be capped and stored in a vitamin bottle in my carry-on luggage (no hold luggage in this flight so that's not an option).

I know that MDMA/ Coke/ Meth are problematic, but what about plain amphetamine? It's not pharma-grade and has a distinct smell.

Cheers.

Amphetamine is very easy for dogs to detect. The thing is the dogs are quite expensive and they don't like having them close to people that can harm them so they often use regular untrained dogs when they are close to you to intimidate you and provoke a reaction. The real sniffers walk behind the scenes after you have checked in your bags.

Not really applicable to your situation, but: a dog and its handler stopped right next to me in the TSA line at a very small airport in the south. I had a gram of heroin in a dental floss container in my backpack. The dog didn't so much as look at me.

Probably depends on where you're going. I'd say it'd be riskier going in and out of the Netherlands or Spain or Scandanavian countries with amphetamine than it would be going in and out of the US or Canada, for example.

Dogs are trained only to detect the most prevalent drugs. If, say, DMT was the biggest problem for Italy, they would train their dogs to sniff for DMT.

I'd bump this too, wonder how Europeans sneak past with their pink speed

The main purpose of contraband-sniffing dogs is to make smugglers even more nervous so that the handler can pick up on it.

Here's another point about dogs and the training they get. I had a friend who trained search & rescue dogs. He said that drug dogs are only trained to detect 1 type of drug. I think is because handlers need to know exactly what the dog is alerting to. This means that weed dogs can't detect coke, speed dogs can't detect opiods. So even if there are drug detecting dogs, you could be safe if it is just the wrong kind of dog. Of course, there is no way to know what the dog you see has been trained to detect.

As that friend turned out to not be the most honest all the time, I would like to hear if anyone else can confirm or deny this.

I am an ex customs officer. Speed is easily picked up by drug dogs. amphetamines are one of the first scents a DD is trained on (Weed is the last)

If a dog hits your scent trail (even from 100metres away) it will wander right up to you and indicate.

Make sure you mix the speed caps in the vitamin bottle with vitamins too. And after you've capped them, wipe each one of them with isopropyl alcohol

Knowing your origin and destination countries would help a lot with us answering this question...

I had an answer for you if you were flying domestic U.S., but that's not the case. I will say, if the dogs are looking for amphetamines, they'd get a lot of false detections from people's meds. I've been through customs a lot in various countries and it depends how much they want to check you. Most of the time if you're a leisure traveler, your bags won't be examined thoroughly. However, if you're from the U.S. and going to Canada to work, they will rifle through all of your shit. They don't like people from the U.S. coming to work and we can only work under certain conditions, like if it's paid for as part of a larger sale. They search your bags to 1. piss you off and 2. to look for evidence that you're getting paid to do service work. I've had those fucks go through everything, including opening sealed cigarettes packs and other things.

The thing to remember about going through customs is that customs agents are trained to tweak your paranoia. They don't smile, laugh, or enter into a pleasurable exchange. Even if you're not breaking the law, you tend to get paranoid when you talk to them. They pick up on that and will make a determination if they want to search you.

In the U.S. post 9/11, most of the dogs you see in airports are trained to detect explosives, not drugs.

I have only been stopped by Drug dogs in Europe.... in America i haven't run into any in airports... i travel weekly and have no problem with a few grams of hash oil on me .... have had the TSA dog screening with MDMA , and a Qt of hash oil on me a few months back... most of walked 4-5 dogs past the line before they were done , changing the dogs often....the dogs didnt flinched when passing me ... assuming there for explosives and gun powder.

also dogs are trained in one compound... cannabis , Coke , herion ect would be its own dog

[1 Points] lovelylittlegangster:

Generally airport dogs are mostly trained for bombs.

But... drug dogs have false positive rates upto 92%(1) for certain groups in certain areas.

So if you see a dog and start acting shady the handler will mark you out and the dog will start barking.
