FBI and DEA under review for use of NSA mass surveillance data

The Justice Department is investigating the FBI's use of information taken directly from mass surveillance conducted by the National Security Agency (NSA)'s collection of telephone metadata.

The yield of that NSA spying program was described by a judge as a "staggering" amount of data when the agency's ability to collect it was struck down as illegal in court earlier this year. The program was resumed in June and will run until at least December.

Another ongoing Justice Department investigation is examining the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)'s use of "parallel construction."

Just to clarify because the title of this post may be confusing, the DEA is under DOJ review specifically for engaging in parallel construction using NSA data. The FBI is under review more broadly for its use of NSA data.

It both amazes and saddens me how many people ignored the Snowden leaks. Moreso for those who are aware of what is going on and simply don't care. I talk about this a lot offline, and an overwhelming number of people say they shouldn't care because they have nothing to hide. Then they give me a dirty look when I ask for their passwords.

They've been doing this for years, haven't they?

[11 Points] shadowofashadow:

Isn't it amazing that the people who appear to care the most about the law break it so often? More proof that authority is about power hungry assholes making people do their bidding more than anything else.

[8 Points] Einsteins_Lovechild:

All those conspiracy theorists that said this would happen must feel pretty stupid now: The US government is investigating whether the US government wrongfully leaked information wrongfully obtained by the US government to other branches of the US government for their wrongful use in prosecutions of US citizens by the US government. I am confident that the US government will put this matter to bed expeditiously, just like it did with those silly rumors that the US government was selling automatic weapons to the Sinaloa cartel in exchange for their intellingence and cooperation against the Zetas and in the border zone in general, and that the US government had even the slightest involvement with Chapo Guzman's escape. "Fast & Furious" was just a bad movie, not a US government/cartel arms partnership. CRAZY TALK.

Is there something wrong with America?

You guys are so...draconian. It's like Europe and the rest of the World are just leaving you guys in the dust.

What a bunch of parasites - them, not you specifically.
