FBI Can Obtain A Warrant If You Run Tor Come December.

Plenty of Bitcoin users use Tor to access the Internet and the deep web. Up until now there was nothing particularly wrong with that, but a new ruling may change that scenario altogether. If this ruling is to be approved, any federal magistrate judge can issue a search and seizure warrant for anyone who uses Tor or similar software to remain anonymous on the Internet.

USING TOR MIGHT BECOME "ILLEGAL."

AND

Unfortunately that success has not gone by unnoticed, as the US Supreme Court has approved a rule change that will shake things up like never before. By granting every federal magistrate judge the right to issue a warrant for anyone using Tor, anonymity on the Internet may become a serious offense. Moreover, if the US Congress does not undertake action to fight this ruling, it will go into effect as soon as December 2016.

Discuss.

This is exactly proof we aren't free. Lol

Run OpenVPN on your router (a speedy DD WRT compatible router costs about 30 bucks). All traffic goes through your offshore VPN. Your ISP can no longer see that you use TOR. I've had VPN uptime of over a month.

This requires that you trust your VPN. But I'd trust a privacy focused VPN like Nord/Black over my ISP, who I'm certain would comply with LE in a second.

25% of Internet users globally use a VPN so you're not gonna stand out (or go on some magic list) by running a VPN like this.

"This article is wrong. The rule change just means that a magistrate judge in the jurisdiction where the crime occurred can grant a warrant; it doesn't change the standard used to evaluate the warrant application. The police still have to show probable cause, this rule changes only which judge can grant it.

Previously, the uncertainty of location meant that no judge in the country could definitively grant the warrant."

[22 Points] honestlyimeanreally:

There's simply no way this will feasibly work.

I had to create a hidden service for a fucking school assignment. Come December, that assignment will put everyone on a list?

Furthermore: think of everyone stealing neighbors wifi with tails. I don't think the neighbors are gonna be too happy when their door is kicked in and they're actually upstanding citizens of American Freedomâ„¢

Either way: anyone serious about buying stuff online with TOR won't be stopped in the slightest. This is just about setting precedent so out rights may be further eroded in years to come.

Who gives a shit honestly.. The most sophisticated users already use the tools that keep their data volatile. Kick my door in, i flip my power strip off and my browsing data goes byebye. What do you have on me? I was using tor on a free linux distro.. Cool story bro. Am i free to go? Lol..

this is so fucked

[4 Points] ShineOnYouFatOldSun:

Does this have any impact on UK tor users whatsoever?

Edit: or any non-US users for that matter.

[6 Points] None:

The fuck? So literally if a fucking person is running Tor they're gonna fuck you with a fucking search and SEIZURE warrant. What the fuck are they gonna do when they raid a fucking journalist who isn't doing shit wrong? This shits actually really scary, but ain't stopping my shit :)

[3 Points] rc4hahahaha:

Your hard drive should be encrypted, so it should not matter if they have a warrant to your computer or not.

FBI can suck my argentinian dick.

Really? Rehashing the same bullshit lie and misinterpretation that has already been pointed out as being false for the last week. THis entire article is total utter bullshit and not at all factuall. And the second site you point to has the worse censorship I have ever seen on a site. When trying to point out that the law does absolutely nothing of the sort they are are claiming (without swearing or aything that would justify deleting) and pointing out what it really means, they delete the comment. I tried multiple times, they kept deleting it along with others who tried to point out how wrong the article was (as his this thread). I guess creating delusional paranoia and fud is their goal, not actual truth.

[2 Points] None:

What if you use tor through a mobile phone? How is this even happening...literally making privacy illegal. Fuck the powers that be for this one. Fuck them all.

[2 Points] redditlogiclol:

This is complete bullshit. Think about it , it makes no sense and it's like saying if you buy a home brewery kit you must be a bootlegger. No judge in the world would approve a search warrant based solely on the use of The , that will never be enough probable cause to stand in court unless you have prior convictions of drug trafficking or manufacturing and maybe a possession with intent to sell. It would be like trying to go to a judge to secure a warrant fr arrest on murder or rape because you own horror films lol. Be. paranoid if you want but it's just BS and I have noticed allot of this here lately. One story states cops have drug sniffing cars lol. Also , look at the source for this story , not exactly a reputable source and if you think foreign nations don't come online to spread fear and hate for your country you need to wake up.

FUCKING BULLSHIT

Yup, just another way to blame drugs for taking our freedoms away. The real irony is that for a lot of us drugs are the only thing that truly make us free.

This is only for Americans, right?

if you're in the US... so yeah, who cares.

[1 Points] None:

Looks like tin foil hat journalism panic scare articles to me. There still needs to be probable cause for a warrant which is a pretty high bar. Just running tor does not automatically get them a warrant.

Am I fucked?

[1 Points] Yourconscious69:

Ok, so I have seen a lot of people saying this is bullshit and is just worded in a way to make us panic. Regardless, if this truly did turn out to be a nightmare for us.. wouldn't using a VPN->Tor prevent the FBI from being able to see that you are even using TOR?

He;s probably posting more and more listing on items I'm not 100% he can deliver honestly on. I really like to swim and i think the liquid ghb i bought from him evaporated.

[1 Points] martinko1337:

I am reading "The Diamond Age" at the moment, a Sci-Fi set in a world where internet turned completely anonymous. Since money transactions etc could be made untraceable It caused all banks and governments to collapse.

[1 Points] freenarative:

If you store it on a thumb drive and run it from that you should be ok, right?

If you get an unexpected police visit you could swallow the drive (or pack it) and all the evidence is gone. (As long as you're not alone in the house you have plausible deniability)

As I see it, they need a warrant to search your computer to FIND tor. They know it's being used but need proof of the user. You can't be proven as the user if it's not on your computer.

Or... Am I missing something?

[1 Points] 2CandyVendor:

Like the other user(s) have suggested, run a VPN straight from your router (use a good VPN though since many can still be subpoena the provider and still bone you). Looks like the age of digital freedom is slowly ending. New technologies will always be around for us to be a step or three ahead of them, just needs a bit more effort :)

[1 Points] Jethro23:

Land of the free?

[1 Points] GuilleX:

So.... If you get infected by ransomware and you are instructed to go online on TOR network to meet your demands... You are still getting visited by the FBI?

Here is am easy way around all this..go to Walmart and get a cheap ass prepaid smart phone..they have one for 28$ buy min with cash...download torbot and orfox..there ya go..you can access tor anonymously and if shit pops off you just chuck the burner...seems pretty easy to me...
