Reminder: Ignore Blackmailers

It seems like this is the week of the blackmailer. I've seen several threads and modmail regarding various blackmail schemes. This is a reminder that you should not engage someone attempting to blackmail you. Blackmailers rely on an opened dialogue. Shut that down and they don't have shit and can't do shit. Almost all of these blackmailers won't do anything. They aren't calling the cops. They aren't going to do shit. The absolute only empowerment they have is if you engage them in conversation. If you don't, they have nothing left to do. Its highly doubtful that they will pursue anything, especially these nickle and dime scammers, they're a joke. They are looking for low hanging fruit and a quick payday. Nothing more. I mean come on, asking for $100 in extortion? What a fucking joke. Its obvious they are just looking for a quick and easy score and not looking to put any effort or work into "exposing" anyone.

If you get a blackmail attempt, ignore it. Burn the address if they have access to your address. Remember, even if the blackmailer calls the cops, what is he going to say? What will they get you on? If you burn the address, there is really nothing for LE to do.

Do NOT pay blackmailers. Do NOT engage in conversation. Report attempts here to try to root out the blackmailer.

Social Engineering is a bitch and a super tool of these scammers and blackmailers. They will also use forms of reverse psychology. TheEconomist hit the nail on the head. Ignore them. The more you talk the deeper the hole you dig.

Ive had that message "if you dont pay XXX btc" happen to me several times, the best approach is to say "go ahead".

Its just scare tactics and sadly it seems to work just like the nigerian prince who left you money.

Don't know the rules regarding legal advice here but depending on state laws, anything evidence/testimony the blackmailer offers to law enforcement would be hearsay when LE goes to the judge for a warrant and would do nothing towards proving probable cause for a search warrant. The anonymous tip would do nothing to further LE investigation and really puts the blackmailer in the compromising position. Edit: my brothers a paralegal and told me this just now I'm not a lawyer lol

Just reply "lol go for it"

Never fails.

Seriously, they prey on the young/naive and scared people who obviously are using their own home.

[1 Points] YeOldeShoppe2:

Anyone resorting to blackmail likely has no money and thus no resources. Haven't received a message like that yet but it would be amusing.

Is there no honor among criminals anymore?

Wait … was there ever?

Anyhow, assholes with little dicks …

[1 Points] blackhand25:

Pro-tip folks: any blackmailer who says something to the effect of "if you don't give me money I will give your information to the police" has nothing to give to the police if you don't pay them. Real blackmailers will send you a photo of you getting out of your car along with evidence of your crimes. Trust me, you'll know when someone has shit on you.
