VPN and Tor or Tails?

What are the weaknesses of each of these and which do you think is better? I'm more curious because I have used both, but I don't necessarily know the technical aspect of it and am curious.

Lets get this strait: Tor and TAILS are for anonymity. VPNs are for privacy.

Neither is better then the other, as they are for two very different tasks.

Weaknesses of all: zero day attacks, hacking, and malicious code.

Tor: Most academic researched anonymity solution. Developed by the US government. Users can be spied on by exit nodes.

TAILS: an end user anonymity solution. Powerful, yet simple to use, and hard to fuck up. Based on Debian. Lots of code, could have backdoors.

VPN: run by a company. Each has different data retention policies. Can't put too much trust in them.
