State of The Sub - Summer 2016

State of the Sub

Mod Addition

As previously announced, we are happy to welcome /u/2cblover. He's already proven to be a wonderful addition and he has jumped right into the fray. I'm glad things are stabilized from a few months ago. We had the departure of several mods who contributed greatly to the sub and was sad to see them leave. I know there were several decisions I made unilaterally which many disagreed with. We are looking to onboard at least one more mod over the next coming weeks or month or so. We have a great core team and we would prefer to slowly add members to ensure chemistry and such is maintained. Again, we are very glad to have /u/2cblover onboard!

Rule Y

Given criticism, feedback and recent events, it was decided that a rule change was necessary. We do our best to maintain an environment conducive to the discussion of our little hobby here. As a result, we've decided to implement a new rule, which we affectionately call "Rule Y".

What is Rule Y?

I figure given the mods here are not elected by popular vote but rather appointed, what better inspiration to draw from than the Supreme Court of the United States. Rule Y is modeled after the Supreme Court decision of Jacobellis v. Ohio which dealt with obscenity laws. Justice Potter wrote the most well known words of this decision as it pertains to hard-core pornography (SCOTUS determined that all pornography outside of hard-core pornography was protected by the first amendment). When he spoke of determining the threshold between legal porn and hard core porn, he said essentially that he couldn't describe what hard-core porn was but "I know it when I see it."

Likewise, Rule Y is intended to give the mods here discretion in moderating and curating content on the sub without having to argue about a loophole or technicality. Like our porn loving Justice Potter and his knowledge of hard core porn, we feel that the mods here have the temperment and ability to discern content that further builds this community positively versus content that adds no value or hurts this community. Given that the mods here are specifically chosen for their knowledge of this sub, its culture, and its purpose, I trust that we will be able to properly curate content with limited infringement on the community's ability to express themselves.

Rule Y is not intended to give us carte blanche on deleting content we may not like. This is not the purpose at all. The problem is the inability to codify every possible rule. We have 16 rules and we didn't want to add 10 more to cover every permutation of bad behavior. The purpose of Rule Y is give us better ability to ferret out problematic content and content that does not serve the best interests of the community.

We are already aware that some will cry censorship or that we are Hitler'ing the sub. And that's fine. There is already censorship and there is already loud cries of dissatisfaction amongst the community. So we figure might as well try something different, see if things improve. Things seriously got to the point where technicalities and loopholes were being played. The 16 Rules were never intended to be the end all, be all but rather a guideline as to how to act in this sub.

Rule Y - Practical Terms

Here's the deal - if you follow the 16 listed rules in spirit and act in good faith, you've got nothing to worry about. /u/Vendor_BBMC can continue his posts with no interference from us. The "fun" drama will not cease. While we think vendor reviews, opsec questions, and the like are the backbone of this place, we also believe its important to build community and have some fun. Rule Y won't interfere with that. However, the trolling is not going to be left unchecked as it has in the past. The bickering back and forth is not going to continue. Off topic comments will be removed. Violations will result in warnings or bans based on the mod's discretion. Stop being fucking dicks to your fellow criminal. Start treating others with respect.

Vendors and the Sub

We want to note that we will be approaching this differently than we have in the past. However, this merits its own post so its not buried in the SoS. Our new policies regarding vendors will be published soon. Please note we want vendors to participate in this community. We love vendors. We do want to ensure a level playing field for all and want to keep the sub as spam-less as possible. We'll be working on the details of this and publish it on its own since its important for vendors to see.

Superlist Changes

We are also playing with different methodologies for adding new markets to the Superlist. The most important change is that we aren't listing as quickly as we have in the past. Previously, a market made an public announcement, waiting a week, and got listed. Now, we want more community involvement and inspection. The market announcement will remain, after a week, a sticky will be made proposing the new market(s) to the community and the community will be given a chance to test the market. We anticipate this part of the process will take about 2 weeks. Remember, this is a community efforts, not a mod effort, to vet new markets. We need to codify this new process and will make an announcement as well.

TL;DR - /u/2cblover is our new mod. Rule Y is our new rule.

Finally we don't have to put up with fucking squaking in every fucking post and the BS that pelican is. There's nothing more annoying then going to read a post then you have to scroll for 5 minutes shaking your head because he's talking about nothing and making bird noises. Thank you so much.

Also, it's a little dangerous how you guys can just delete whatever you want. That's going to be a big problem with a lot of people here.

[2 Points] LSD145:

Sounds like a good step in the right direction. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Glad you guys are listening to issues though and are putting in the effort to keep this sub functioning.

[2 Points] Throughawayup:

I think that's a good idea. The mods seem to have good heads on their shoulders around here. All hail our new leader for I am just a sheep in a herd.

[2 Points] UnclePsych0:

I, for one, am in support of using Justice Potter's ubiquitous quote in order to make sure that everyone treats his fellow man appropriately.

It is truly impossible to outline every single instance of things we shouldn't be doing, but it's not too hard to use a little common sense and agree on unacceptable behavior, especially when it drags on and on through a large number of different threads.

I'd also like to use a famous quote to respond to a famous quote. Instead of using a representation of authority (and I do appreciate the parallels you drew between the mods and judges), I'd like to use a man who started down the career that made him famous because "he was no good at selling LSD".

Alan Moore.

Who watches the watchmen?

I think there's a clear difference between moderating and censoring. But how does this work? The Supreme Court has at least some semblance of checks and balances. But what are we supposed to do? Bring the admins in? (Writing that sentence alone makes me shiver).

Do the mods "watch the watchmen"? Does it require a universal consensus or at the very least majority vote from the mods to start perma-banning accounts from here? Or can one frustrated mod start taking down an account unilaterally? Because you, /u/Theeconomist1 , made your account specifically to mod, then there's the chance that you had a DNM account beforehand. That account probably had some kind of relationship with the other people here, and I doubt every mod can say that all of these relationships were 100% perfect. How do you make sure mods don't start taking down posts for no reason?

Or how do we protest posts being banned? Message someone? If you're not allowed back in the sub, how do you check who mods it? Memorization?

Like I said, I support this decision but it'd be cool if I knew that someone at least thought of how to balance the blank cheque the mods have just been written.

Tl;dr: Meth

Yeah, this lived up to my expectations. You put a lot of work into this post. I appreciate it.

It makes me sad to come to this place and want to leave due to nothing but garbage wanna be drama (like some knockoff days of our lives shit for upvotes, come the fuck on) and massive amounts of hostility to a community that solely exists to help each other get high... Rule Y excites me.

Rule Y?

Rule WHY more like.

The "Yld card". Y have rules that we have to follow, but the mods can ignore at their discretion? Y bother with the 16 preceeding rules if you're a moderator? They're only for the plebs now. Stop YYYY ning.

I've got a feeling that it won't be used to crack down on stuff the mods don't like. It will be used to allow banned sports like vendor-baiting, total cock fights, and other stuff mods get up to when they're bored. hey, but don't take my word for it. This video explains the rule in more detail:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd1hko6-his

But I see I'm outnumbered by you guys who've just given the mods unilateral carte blanche to ignore the rules or create new legislation on-the-fly, because they're being nice today.

/u/Vendor_BBMC can continue his posts with no interference from us

I'll go with the flow, especially as ANYTHING I DO, BY DEFINITION, HAS BEEN PRE-APPROVED in this rule book stitch up, to keep me quiet, and I know a good deal when I see one. So after further consideration, I've decided that its the best rule ever. I'm above the law too, so somebody else can be this sub's conscience. No takers? Anybody? Meh..

Next thing you know, they'll be sneaking gwern back in under an assumed name. Oh, and welcome to 2cblover. As Phil Collins and Phil Bailey sang, "He's Two CB Lover, he'll take your heart but you won't feel it"

Ohhhhhh, pretty much what I guessed when you sent me to that case then?

This is very risky imo.

In essence, you're kinda modelling your rules on the Gestapo now then u/TheEconomist1? ;-)

For the sake of transparancy, could you not start up r/DNMFightclub again, and migrate those posts to there, where they can carry on as they wish? Then we can all see if you (the mods) were fair in your decision? I know that might mean a bit more moderation, but it'd hardly matter to ban a load of dicks if they were over there and cross the line (i.e. doxxing).

Or just ban them from here and send them to (a private) FC for a week, kinda like what we did to Australia?

Or another suggestion, a locked sub page here where removed comments are migrated to? It can be in the rules, and a link to the page in a sticky?

It's a tough situation, but it seems like a slippery slope. Afterall, at least 2 mods here have admitted to corruption in the short time I've been here......

[0 Points] None:

So you now want carte blanche to remove anything at all because it's too hard to write a decent set of rules which covers most of what you'll see in practical, day-to-day moderating. I think that's lazy and lame. It's based on a pure cop out and is a dangerous precedent.

"Hey, why'd you remove X? What rule did I break?"

"Rule Y, muh fucka; now slag off."

"Oh, okay; well, what specifically is Rule Y and how did I break it?"

"It's not really a rule. It's more of a policy which gives moderators unlimited, unchecked, unilateral authority to remove posts at will."

"Oh..."

Yeah, this is going great.
