Why do people DDOS DNM's like Alphabay? Is there any profit in it for these people?

I really just don't understand why people would DDOS our markets. Is it maybe the government doing it secretly, or maybe some other competing marketplace?

They're not really being ddos'd. It's just a simulation to add drama along with the story line.

There are a few reasons.

Firstly, as [redacted] rightly said, they can hold it ransom. Downtime will cause HUGE amounts of money to be lost, so the longer they don't pay, the more money they lose.

Another reason can be another market hiring a team/someone to do it to drive more people to their site.

People also do it just because they can. Likely have the psychopathic tendency to enjoy having power over others and this is how they express that. As much as I hate to admit it, I've been guilty of that in the past.

Saying all that, couldn't it just be unplanned downtime?

Another market, a hacker who wants $ or a government are the main things that come to mind. Maybe someone demonstrating the power of their botnet to potential customers (people that would pay to rent the botnet to DDOS whatever they want, not necessarily the markets). Possibly an independent person/entity that has a personal vendetta against drug use but that seems unlikely.

Man I swear these mod flairs get better everyday. Seriously half the reason I come here.

[3 Points] PM_me_BTC_or_ETH:

Some people just like to watch the world burn.

On the other side, big markets are big business, lots of money every day. If you drive casual sales to your site (even temporarily), you make more money - probably more money than the DDOS cost.

Outages erode confidence in your service. Your adversaries, benefit from that lack of confidence; especially in a week where you're already reeling from a security breech.

[3 Points] BoxAddict:

Maybe I can provide some of my thoughts on this. The last times that DDOS were happening to other markets one of these two things happened.... One.) exit scam

Or

Two.)attempt at law enforcement to find server locations via tor

I guess option 0 is just keep on trekkinglol

It is funny watching people cry after you click the button to send the command out to the zombie network to attack.

Why do people troll on the internet? It's often the same answer.
