Can anyone share information on phone taps?

Here's the context:

A person I know has recently been suspected of being a cop informant after some sketchiness on a phone call he made (strange ways of asking for bars, beeps, background noises) and just now he has called my number and I answered it. The whole time, I heard background voices, possibly echos of whatever I've said and I'm sketched out as fuk...especially since I'm dirty. I'm wondering if by simply answering this call, could that lead to my phone being tapped? It's a smartphone too, which makes it even more risky/likely to be tapped. I've downloaded a battery manager app and data manager app to track the amount of battery and data my phone uses, as I've read that those are clear indicators of a phone tapping. Please share your knowledge so that I may have peace of mind.

If you are in the US, your phone IS being recorded by GCHQ in the UK.

In return, your NSA handle all our phones. That way, our own governments aren't spying on us.

"Tapped" is 1970s, pre-digital / VoIP/internet terminology. Get on the bus, grandad! If you are going to discuss drug transactions use an encrypted messenger app, or at least "redphone" scrambler app. You only need to say the word "cocaine" for your recorded conversation to be sifted out from the haystack.

ALWAYS assume that your phone conversations aren't private, and use a system. I'll give an example:-

Say you are a local dealer, and you are arranging a time to meet. There is "normal" time, and "honest to god" time, If you say "I will come round at 8PM", it means you will meet at 8PM,

If you say "I'll be there at 11PM, honest to god", it means you will meet at 8PM. By saying those 3 words, it means "whatever time I just said, knock 3 hours off". You will arrive at 8PM, do the deal, be gone by 8:30PM (maybe 9PM if you're a weed dealer). LE will get in position to watch the place at 10PM, thinking they're an hour early. They will sit eating donuts until 1AM, then go home wondering why they keep missing you.

Ex-telco engineer reporting in.

You do not need software on a phone to listen in on the calls. Nor do you need anything that will make beeps, bloops or other digital noises. Or clicks. All you need is love... Sorry, I mean software.

Echoes CAN (read, VERY OCCASIONALLY) be a side effect of directly listening to a conversation but with modern technology, mostly the echo is just feedback.

Are VOIP or apps such as hangouts insecure?
