tails alternative

Hey guys. Title says it all. Basically I'd like something like tails running from a live usb or not doesn't really matter to me but with which I can easily use a VPN. It's too annoying to set it up again each time using tails I'd like something where I can keep my VPN installed permanently...

any suggestions? thanks

Look into persistance volumes in tails, there's a way to do what you'd like to (save data across reboots, encrypted partition/jails, use dd to make a file to mount as a "drive" with some decent encryption and a good passphrase in your persistance volume and store all your data and necessary files there.

Whonix and Tails are the two standard distros that are preached in the DNM community. Kali Linux is also worth a look if you are into security and not just looking for a Tor encapsulated barebones OS to live-boot from.

I use Mint on encrypted USB.

Doesn't seem much worse OPSEC wise than having a persistence on tails.

As others have said, you could use Whonix or Qubes if using a VPN in your set-up is important to you. Alternatively, you could use a router running firmware which allows you to install a VPN client such as OpenVPN. Then all your web traffic would go through the VPN, regardless of what device you were using whilst connected to your home network. Because the Tails devs don't like Tails being used in conjunction with a VPN, this option is basically your best bet for using Tails with a VPN and doesn't require you to repeatedly configure the VPN client once it's done initially.

I'd be going with Whonix or Qubes instead of Tails if a VPN is a necessary inclusion.

There's a Qubes LiveUSB now, but odds are your hardware won't be compatible with it, and I think it's alpha still.

Something to consider however.
