NEW YORK, NY -- Federal authorities busted a cocaine ring Tuesday charged with shipping the drug through the U.S. Postal Service.

Preet Bharara, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the indictment had been unsealed against nine suspects and seven were taken into custody Tuesday morning. Two were still at large, according to Bharara.

Authorities allege from May 2015 to July 2016, the nine defendants -- eight men and one woman -- shipped cocaine from Puerto Rico to New York City, using a method as simple as the U.S. Postal Service. The organization "shipped, trafficked, and distributed cocaine," according to the indictment. The indictment alleges they arranged the shipment of cocaine, retrieved it from various locations in Manhattan and the Bronx, stored the drugs in a storage facility in Manhattan and repackaged and sold the drugs to individual customers.

All nine have been charged with distributing and possession with the intention of distributing a controlled substance. Federal authorities seized over 25 kilograms -- about 55 pounds -- of cocaine.

"The defendants engaged in a brazen scheme to turn the U.S. Postal Service into their own drug delivery service," Bharara said. "The defendants, which includes an employee of the U.S. Postal Service, allegedly schemed to ship multiple kilograms of cocaine through the mail, going so far as to claim, in one instance, that a lost package contained the ashes of a cremated relative, when in fact, it contained cocaine."

The names of the indicted are as follows:

Justin Acosta
Eleelin Diaz
Jose Diaz, aka "Gordo"
Cristian Garcia
Kelving Hernandez
Felix Jimenez, aka "Daddy"
Robert Rodriguez, aka "Smiley"
Miguel Torres, aka "Ant"
Britney Worthy

According to the indictment, Jose Diaz and Jimenez were in charge of supervising the trafficking. Acosta, Garcia, Rodriguez and Torres were in charge of receiving and distributing the packages from the USPS. Eleelin Diaz and Worthy managed operations in the Bronx. Hernandez was an employee of the Postal Service and he assisted in tracking shipments and directing them to locations for pick-up.

A man on the inside didn't help Rodriguez, who authorities allege "contacted the USPS multiple times for information on the status and location of certain parcels that contained cocaine" and falsely claimed in an email to the Postmaster that one of the packages contained his father's ashes.
