MADRID - Spanish police said on Monday that packages containing 33 kilograms (72.75 pounds) of synthetic drugs sent from a Chinese website for distribution in Spain had been intercepted and that British citizens were involved.
An investigation was launched after the discovery of several orders from a Chinese website that were routed to Spain.
"National police agents have intercepted 33 kilograms of new psychoactive substances sent to Spain from one of the main Chinese websites specializing in the sale of synthetic drugs," said a police statement.
"Five British individuals have been identified" as the recipients in Alicante, southern Spain, but were yet to be tracked down, the statement added.
The suspects had allegedly created a website in the so-called Deep Web in order to sell the contents of the packages.
Investigators identified the recipients of 15 of the shipments, which were received in mailboxes rented from parcel companies.
The packages, sent from China, weighed between one-three kilos each.
Spanish investigators collaborated with law enforcement agencies from both China and the United Kingdom in the operation.
