Woman pleads guilty in methamphetamine-by-mail case (Joplin, Mo 7 Jun 2016)

A woman charged with trafficking in drugs by arranging delivery in the mail of more than a half-pound of methamphetamine to her mother-in-law's home in Carthage pleaded guilty Monday to a lesser offense.

Kristen N. Goodwin, 29, of rural Carthage, pleaded guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin to possession of methamphetamine, an offense punishable by up to seven years in prison. She had been facing a charge of first-degree trafficking in drugs, which carries from 10 to 30 years or up to what is considered life in prison.

Circuit Judge Gayle Crane ordered a sentencing assessment of the defendant and set a sentencing hearing for Aug. 8.

Goodwin came to the attention of law enforcement in October 2014 when a package containing 266 grams of methamphetamine was delivered to her mother-in-law's home. The package was addressed to Goodwin's son.

Postal inspectors had detected the presence of the drug in the package and informed local law enforcement before its delivery.

Goodwin told an investigator with the Jasper County Drug Task Force that she was being paid to provide an address where the package could be sent and was not otherwise benefiting from the delivery.

Take note, ordering to your mother-in-laws house is in fact not a good place for your drop to be.
