[X-post: DNM Noobs] Escrow Etiquette?

Hi Everyone,

Couple of questions. An order was made just over a week ago, one that was FEd (vendor had tons of good reviews and it wasn't enough money to really care about). Packet was noted as shipped immediately on overnight delivery (letter) and has not arrived (1.5 weeks ago).

Another purchase was made the next day with escrow with a different vendor. Small again.

Question is, what is the etiquette on finalizing if the packet wasn't received (there's a couple days left before it finalizes automatically/packet was marked delivered immediately and shipping costs were charged)?

Obviously, finalizing on a packet that hasn't been received would not be beneficial, but if the packet was indeed sent and is just held up in the mail a vendor shouldn't be short changed.

When should the vendor be contacted? Wait until the day of finalization? What do?

If you haven't received I would try and contact the vendor first. If no response in a few days (before autofinalize) open up a dispute.

They may have a good reason why you haven't gotten anything, and they may be full of it and you might save yourself some coins opening up a dispute.

The only real etiquette here is finalize when you receive your product and don't open a dispute without contacting the vendor first (or leave negative feedback) - unless they have a ton of recent negative feedback and they've obviously started scamming.

I'd just like to add that you should NEVER be passive or let a case go by unresolved.

You may seem like you are trying to be cool and sooth the situation by not making trouble. I can understand this and am guilty of doing it in my past. But it really fucks it up for the next guy.

People rely on reviews and ratings. That is the whole idea of a trusted market. Good ratings drive sales while any rating other than a 5 could have potential buyers fleeing the listing in favor of someone with a solid review or more solid good transactions. If you just roll over and take it on the deal, it may be a quick and easy way to "just move along", but it really skews the rating system. It's obviously different for every marketplace and were just now starting to see smarter systems in place to calculate the vendor rating by taking into who is saying it actually. New systems are making it so someone with an older account who has spent more on the market and has a solid track record effect the points on a greater scale

Dispute the order before the timer runs out, and release funds once the package arrives. If only all customers were as polite as you :)

Never ever let escrow auto finalize. Contact vendor as per their profile (waiting the number of days they ask) and before timer runs out dispute it with a note that it hasn't been received. Not uncommon and a good vendor shouldn't take offense. If you intended to pay before you got the pack you would have FEd. You didn't. Vendors should understand this. Mail and delays are part of the game.
