[Vendor Review] Hacked Cable Modems courtesy of YouInVerse (and the story of his disappearance)

I got a rare PM from an old friend today. If some of you recall about 2-3 months ago a guy I'd met on IRC related to Motorola Surfboard Modem hacking had made a thread on here about his plan to open shop and sell pre-fabbed hacked cable modems. I was one of his initial 3 test customers that agreed to work with him outside of escrow. I was also the one who recommended him vend his modems here/DNM markets.

Here's the thing I got my modem about 2 months ago and it works fabulously. As soon as I got on TC to ping him back about how well it was working for me he wasn't on which was unusual because he was in constant contact with me while he was working/testing my modem.

I hadn't seen him since! Weird... but I thought since I got my order no big deal at least I didn't get scammed.

Onto the review itself... The modem works like a charm. I hooked it up to my comcast connection which he tailored the settings to and it got on in about 30 seconds. I checked out the modem firmware @ 192.168.100.1 and it was running something called haxorware and it was set to a business tier config file something C01_BIZ_30.cm or something like that. And the MAC address was spoofed obviously to some modem on Comcast preconfigured for those speeds.

On a speed test I did 50Mbps down and 30Mbps up. Not fucking bad at all! The speeds practically melted my face when I went on my favorite private torrent tracker and was download @ 5 Megabytes per second and SEEDING @ 3 Megabytes per second. Fucking wow.

Anyway, he told me that he got 2 of 3 modems sent out and then his workshop where he modifies his modems got struck by lightning and most of his equipment got fried. In this alleged catastrophe he lost the encrypted PGP information for one his customers. He wanted me to reach out here and ask if that customer could come forward. You can PM me and I'll PM you back his email.

Namaste pham!

TL:DR Took a chance on a hacked modem. Ended up working flawlessly. Vendor dissappears. Gets in touch with me again.

EDIT: Apparently through further chatting with him after I posted this he lost two of his main computers that he had HDDs heavily encrypted. The limited amount of customer information he was saving (In PGP encrypted format) was lost. He lost his TorChat ID, PGP key ring, customer emails. Luckily he had only taken 3 preorders and 2 out of 3 were shipped. He found my information on reddit because he remembered my LSD reviews and searched for them apparently. Then PM'ed me on here.

EDIT 2: I found the guy with a little sleuthing that seems to be the customer who didn't get the modem. /u/pjewvszn from thread https://pay.reddit.com/r/DarkNetMarkets/comments/1ypidf/hacked_cable_modem_dude_disappeard

If your seeing this dude PM me for the cable modem dudes email addy!

JUST AN UPDATE. THIS GUY IS A SCAMMING DOUCHE. NEVER RESPONDED TO ANY MORE EMAILS, HE SUCKS. LOST OUT ON $200 IN BTC FUCK HIM.

[4 Points] QuestionsonDrugs:

I remember this guy and had chatted with him earlier about possibly getting one of his modems. Did he say if he was going to try and rebuild and then get on one of the markets?

I thought these modems don't work no more in certain cities. What model surfboard do you have? I want to research to see if it can work in my area and try to find one.

Don't trust this guy. He's nothing but a very good scammer who used to work for cable companies and knows a bit about this subject. The account that made this thread is a shill probably, never mind how long it was registered or its activity. People will go through tremendous efforts to farm sockpuppets for a scam that is this profitable. When I talked to him he couldn't keep his lies straight. He tries to become your friend and appeal to you to gain your trust. In the end I chatted with 2 different guys who were scammed by him and they all said he told them completely different stories about the modems and stuff. When you send him the money he doesn't send you anything but he'll keep on chatting you up to reassure you. He tries pressuring you to conduct the deal directly without escrow but if you insist on escrow he will stall you and say he has too many customers and he won't be able to reserve a modem for you. All this talk about him losing his files is one of the oldest and most common excuses used by liars, scammers, and flakes since it has perfect deniability. Admins you can delete this post or do whatever the fuck you want, but please realize I'm only trying to help. If anyone does any business with this guy use escrow at a minimum. Like they say, if anything seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Can you be tracked to your phsysical address using one of thees?

[2 Points] Dirtypopaknopolous:

IIRC ISPs will send out "kill signals" which basically null your hacked firmware every so often so be careful.

YouInVerseModems - "Just dont want to rush into things with any one market before I can pentest some of them myself."

This is the first time I've heard of hacked modems and a Google search just brings this thread back as the top result. So, with apologies for being a noob, can someone explain to me what the benefits of a hacked modem are? I gather from this post they bypass ISP traffic throttling?

[1 Points] fishscalelove:

Wot if MAC addressess end up in LEO's possession via vendor comprimisation? These hacked modems sound gravy but there is always the chance....

[1 Points] MrBubbles007:

So what exactly will this hacked modem do? Pardon my ignorance.

[1 Points] None:

Is he going to go back into business? I would love to have one for myself, and know plenty of people who would be interested as well.

I'd be willing to pre order to help him get back on his feet.

[1 Points] LeanMan:

Do you have any CenturyLink modems by chance?

[1 Points] helpyoustudy:

Good luck with sales! It's a pain in the ass fixing it. But all the information is out there to do it yourself you just gotta read. I've spent many of nights on the forum. SB5101 FOR LIFE!!!

I AM THE THIRD PERSON THAT NEVER RECEIVED A MODEM. So I will keep everyone updated with how he plans to resolve this problem. PLEASE for your own safety, DO NOT send this guy any BTC, until he resolves MY issue. I was disappointed when I received nothing before, but I will become more disappointed if I receive nothing this time, because my hopes keep getting shattered.

[1 Points] pjewvszn:

So far he is responding back to me, and has asked me to encrypt my info in the emails to get a reship out to me. I will keep everyone posted with how this works, but until then EVERYONE should be extremely cautious with sending ANY Btc to him. Please just wait until he has sorted my issue out to send anything.

Sorry would you mind explaining what the point in this is? It sounds to me like a router running openwrt with a spoofed mac, what's the point? EDIT: stopped being lazy and googled it I see now, does it just affect your speeds or does it help with anonimity?
