Like, the little yellow dots laser prints encode on to the page to identify the printer?
I don't really see this being a problem. I mean, it's not like they encode an IP. Just a serial number like code. And it's not like there is some giant database of who owns what printer serial number.
It can't be used to find someone in the first place, only corroborate an existing investigation.

You're putting it on a pedestal. There's a bunch of ways. Those yellow dot printers are specific printers so if you use an older one you'll be good. Also, if you go to the post office and buy a bunch of stamps they'll give you tracking stickers. That's all I'm going to say, but there are other ways :)
It hasn't been done far as I know. Kinda the Holy grail for vendors. A lot of people claim to have and want to sell it but can provide no proof. Better believe, they do figure it out they ain't sharing.
