Tails absolutely necessary?

Hi, I will be looking for small amounts of L for personal use and was wondering if tails is an absolute necessity? Couldn't I just run Ubuntu & Tor on a Virtual machine from an encrypted USB? I ask this because I want to get browsing ASAP. I also don't have DVD's to burn tails on and i'm a lazy basard.

Thanks!

Not a good start.

Nothing is absolute. If you want the best security available, Tails is among your options. Laziness is not.

Feel free to make sacrifices, but know the risks.

The data on a virtual machine is still subject to being compromised by the host system. Also, you don't need a DVD for Tails, you can use a USB drive.

Yeah I don't have another USB.

I'll go get some DVD's and get tails set up then. I realise this isn't something to take lightly.

Thanks

If you want the best security possible when dealing with DNM stuff, think in layers of security. I advise you though to not take this lightly because essentially, you're gonna order illegal stuff and get drugs mailed to your house.

Tails is the first and basic layer of security. You can't use Windows, you can't use Macs, hell, you can't even use some distros of Lignux (Ubuntu) because all these systems can (and some even do) send data from your computer to the company without your knowing/consent.

Though, you can make sacrificies though. Ex. not using Tails but some other, similar distro of Lignux (Debian, Arch, Gentoo, hell, even Mint is better than Ubuntu considering OPSEC) because essentially, all of the Lignux distros are the same, they just differ in some things. And with a bit of tweaking, you can make your OS behave exactly like Tails. But why do this when you already have a system that was made to be secure?

By the way, if your computer supports booting from USB, you don't have to burn Tails on a DVD. You just burn it to USB.

OP, do you realize it's this mentality that gets people caught?

It's very simple to understand. Your OPSEC without TAILs is about as good as a robber attempting to steal in plain sight. Not a very good method but effective if no one is looking.

Now if you used TAILs your OPSEC is now like wearing a magically camouflaged blanket. Nearly impossible to detect, so it is much more difficult and time consuming.

I was just like you OP. I literally made a thread over a month ago (close to 2 now) and asked if Tails was absolutely necessary, and how many people are just using TOR + windows or under a VPN or running a VM. Got mixed answers, but nearly everyone that said they were using TAILs told me it's just an extra layer of security that makes it much harder to get caught doing this.

I mean, why? Just spend the 10 bucks on another flash drive or borrow one from a friend. You can clone TAILs too. I waited over 3 weeks just to be able to finally get a flash drive (broke student) specifically for TAILs. And I just lost it a week ago too. Sorry for the rant I'm pretty high. But yeah, just do it man. You'll be much more glad that you did.
