gwern isn't a drug addict unless weird anime sound tracks are a drug.

Yes, of course it was St. Exo. And that was 100% confirmed a week ago after SSBD was given time served.

thanks, missed this in the SSBD report.

If Adrian Chen or Andy Greenburg posted on this sub it would take 1 minute for a bunch of groupies to be licking their asses.

i definitely wouldnt lick adrian chen's ass; he pissed me the fuck off with his big "expose" on SR. as for greenberg, i'd only lick his asshole if it was AGAPE.

speechless

(and just a wee bit spooked)

[3 Points] OzFreelancer:

But now I've got my speech back (and I really do thank you, a really lovely and very long diatribe), a couple of things:

iirc actually burned out of covering SR at one point because her feelings were hurt when people questioned the publishing of a screen grab from a private admin forum obtained because of her journalist credentials at SR

I never had "hurt feelings". And I certainly never posted any private screenshots.

I did get a little bit burned out. SR was basically my full time job (and don't get me wrong, best job in the world).

Writing articles for the mainstream press and the blog was easy in 2012. I was pretty much the only one doing it with any regularity and others who did venture in and did more than the hit'n'run "ZOMG you can buy drugs on the interwebz and download them straight into your veins... Won't somebody think of the CHILDREN" types were really cool (Patrick O'Neill in particular comes to mind). We didn't compete, we had a mutual respect and supported and promoted each other's work. DDW came later but he's pretty old school too. (People like gwern and moustache I consider more to be researchers than journos and they are both totally next level. Their work is astonishing and I credited them both in the book.)

Now the market is saturated, and everyone races to be the first to put something out. I'm not bitter about it, that's just the way things go. But it's not for me and my geography makes it near impossible to compete on that level anyway. So that's why there is big delays between blogs sometimes. If I don't have anything good (at least what I consider good) or different to write, I just don't write rather than put up any old shit.

And there were other things. For some reason, I got heaps of people wanting to unload their stories or things they found out contacting me using all manner of self-exploding notes and insisting on different chat clients or obscure mail services and then they'd say "but you can't tell anyone". WTF? Why contact a journo out of the blue then? I don't know if it was because I was the one person they could count on was what it said on the package, but for some reason they unloaded and I wound up with all this stuff I couldn't do anything with and just ran out of advice or whatever it was they wanted. It was really time consuming.

Then there were the ones with their own agendas who would send me down all different rabbit holes, or were feeding me misinformation hoping to see what they could get me to print or whatever. Games got boring and, again, time-consuming.

So yeah, got a little burned out, bored, whatever. But never, ever, had my feelings hurt :P

Thanks again for your kind words. I really do appreciate it. And I've "met" some very, very interesting people over the years :)

No way. Chen is widely regarded as a piece of shit throughout all of reddit. Last time he posted here he was ridiculed to hell and back.

/u/gwern is a character in this book.

In the story, the end of the world is coming. One of the characters is an insurance analyst. He does a ton of statistical analysis to determine the risk/reward ratio of trying illegal drugs has now flipped over into the positive.

I don't know how others view gwern, but I hold him in high regard.. His skin could be addled with track marks, and I would still consider him one of the most critical, analytical, and detail oriented minds in the world today.. Let alone amongst or community. I considered writing a series of short stories about dnm's, and gwern's work would be one of the few reasons it would be possible.. At the same time it is also the main reason I have not, and would be intimidated by the task. I don't know how many nights I've sat reading way past my bed time because of gwern.
