[CommunityDiscussion] I am a UK postman, AMA

If this is in the wrong place, please remove and point me elsewhere.

I have worked as a postman for around 6 months in various towns in the UK. AMA.

There isn't a whole lot to say, but I know a lot of you are anxiously peeping through your blinds every morning, so this should help you pass the time and put your minds at ease!

Disclaimer: slightly misleading title. I quit around a month ago. It was a shit job, though well paid, it was a bitch.

Good to hear.

For International Packs say coming from Canada and USA what security measures are in place so that narcotics does not get through? Dogs? x Ray?

Also if pack is seized does the sender address get sent to local police?

This would be very helpful.

Can you tell? Do people check?

I was a UK postman many years ago too for a short while. And have been a UK receiver of mail all my life.

This sub has really made me appreciate the Royal Mail because of the talk from US subscribers!

All this "You have to use the actual name that goes with the address" shit! Seriously?!! WTF is that!!!??

What if you have someone stay with you for a short time? What about if I send a friendly birthday card to my mate and give him a stupid joke name on it? What about my Mother's day cards which are always addressed to "Mum"?

This is crazy shit. I'll bet anyone a pound to a penny I could send myself a letter (perhaps not a bulky package) addressed to "Sir Smokesbluntsalot" at my address and the postman would do no more than have a little chuckle and maybe a joke with me if I happened to see him at the door.

Can you tell when it's something dodgy?

[4 Points] None:

Are high risk countries like the Netherlands actually more likely to become inspected?

if I don't receive a domestic order what are the chances it has been lost in the RM system vs stolen by a postal worker?

[2 Points] dellwho:

vendors bullshitting uk-uk can take up to 9 days - the IS bullshit, right?

[2 Points] IEthrowaway12345:

Do you know if post from EU to Ireland passes through the UK at all?

[1 Points] softvodka:

On theft: There is the notion that you should never mail cash, because it will be seized, or stolen by the mailman. Some vendors, trying to scam, send empty envelopes with signs of having been opened by a third party (loose adhesive flap, no sellotape etc.)

Do you know of mailmen stealing the contents of parcels and deliver the empty envelope?

Wouldn't an empty envelope raise suspicion of mail services and/or their employees?

If you had to guess: Is that vendor scam, mailman theft, or confiscation of sorts?

[1 Points] dnmsmail:

Do you have any idea what happens if anything illegal is found?

And how is mail shipped from far ends of the UK, for example the far ends of scotland and england, or england to northern ireland? Is it done by air or land?

[1 Points] SgtFaecesProcessor:

Struggling to think of my own question really. I guess, what's the likelihood of mail getting ripped/compromised at a sorting depot?

And I guess, what are "services" are treated like by mail workers? IE: Does recorded/signed, special delivery make any difference compared to each other and regular 1st or 2nd class mail? Or is it bit of a waste other than obviously it being kept track of better [with the tracking system]?

Oh, I guess I should ask what happens if you(a buyer) miss a delivery of drugs but I guess you've kinda answered that; if a package is found they'll call the police so there's no need to be paranoid about picking up a package from the post office, right? Does that make sense?

I've crawled the RM site trying to think of any vulnerabilities.

[1 Points] ChewyTheSheep:

Also ex-UK postie here.

The only reason you even look at the name on a letter is to check it against the list of previous tenants who have asked for their mail to be forwarded. If it doesn't match a name on that list you deliver the fucking package.

[1 Points] DNM__TA:

What precautions should I take when sending packages?

[1 Points] Excessing:

Do UK posties care about packages being delivered to unoccupied houses?
