Couple reasons at least

  1. Tor - the connection you are using at this time could be slow - maybe next time it's faster.

  2. The Markets - All the connections to agora/evo/whatever are via 1 single gateway. The URL that you connect to is a single server somewhere. when you connect to clearnet sites you can connect to many sites that server the same content.

For example google.com Name: google.com
Addresses: 2a00:1450:4013:c01::65
74.125.136.113
74.125.136.101
74.125.136.100
74.125.136.139
74.125.136.102
74.125.136.138

Google.com returns 6 addresses (that I can see) that then forward your requests to another N number of servers. So there is a massive number of servers that respond to your single request.

With Darknet servers, there can really only be 1 server that can respond to a URL, so all that traffic and all those requests need to be handled by one server initially. My site (dnstats) handles around 100k pv a month and even though it's readonly for the most part it is still under a bit of load.

TLDR:

clearnet = many servers handling connections - virtually unlimited bandwidth

Darknet = 1 server serving connections - limited bandwidth

ELI5 = Many cars trying to use a single, shitty road to get to work.

the Tor network isn't designed to handle tons of traffic, nor are the servers most of the markets are hosted on. Every market that has become popular has become "slow" SR, SR2, Atlantis, Sheep, BMR, scams or not, when they get popular they get slow. Best chance is to access the markets when most people are in school or very late at night when most kids are sleeping.
