I find it hard to search for what i want, but if i drill down many levels via browsing i have better results
am i missing something?
i use grams too, but seems like this should be easier and not hard to implement.
thx
ELI5 - Why does searching a darknet marketplace suck so much?

Because you are bitch that's been spoiled by google.
Learn to do some actual "nitty gritty" research, and use the filters provided on the sites. Plugging "Best Cali Weed" into Grams ain't gonna get you what you want. Use the site tools on the major sites to sort by country, price, and other variables.
This is not a stab at Grams, which is awesome for tracking down specific vendors certain products.

Try searching your local drug dealer for what you want, the DNM are much better.

It's hard to hire good help to run an illegal market. Look how many markets are infiltrated by law enforcement or informants.

Bc building a good search is not easy. Search is more than matching up keywords which is prob the extent that DNMs can offer without resorting to open source product. Searching against relational databases is hard to make good. Any decent search will include different technolgies including building index files, graphs, maps, etc. SQL is set theory and works great with joining data using common keys. Building robust queries based on words is painfully difficult. One word and its synonyms is hard enough. Introduce multiple words or phrases and forget about it. Even solving that does not lead to great search experience.

I agree with feedback that i need to find trusted dealers. i look on reddit at EVO and Ag subreddits, seems to be less popularitly than i expected. i'm relatively new, but very impressed with service i've recieved i'm seeing 20 upvotes on something, but wish we were in the hundreds. maybe people are even more lurkish that on clear net. understandable

Visit markets and browse until you find what you need, then go to comparable market and compare prices (you know like shopping before the internets). PS Agoras search engine is uesless.

Just go on the forums or here to find what you're looking for, it's way more reliable to have actual user reviews than just reading vendor page and rating

all of the DNM's use SQL queries for search and not a proper search index as provided by Sphinx or a similar product. It is extremely slow and offers no fuzzines on matches (ie. searching 'coke' would return 'coke', 'cocaine', 'coca' etc. because the engine knows). SQL based search is the equivalent of hitting control + f on a document, it is one dimensional and doesn't support the common search techniques most users are accustomed to and those algorithms that provide better results.
The state of DNM tech is where websites were 15 years ago - in some ways they have to be for security reasons, but the lack of good search is simply because none of the DNM developers are experienced in it or know how to implement a proper index.
I honestly never had this experience, the DNMs I use are extremely user friendly.
