Alphabay

Busted but apparently not taken over?

Hansa

Seized and taken over since June 20. Time to clean your house and make it tidy for law enforcement.

Dutch press release: https://web.archive.org/web/20170721011109/https://www.politie.nl/en/news/2017/july/20/underground-hansa-market-taken-over-and-shut-down.html

Some 10,000 foreign addresses of Hansa Market buyers were passed on to Europol. More than 500 Dutch delivery addresses were reported to couriers and postal services with the intention of stopping the deliveries.

You can view the seizure-banner here http://hansamkt3iph6sbb.onion - you really stepped up your design game law enforcement. The other hidden service mirror of hansa seems just offline.

The Dutch National Police have located Hansa Market and taken over control of this marketplace since June 20, 2017. We have modified the source code, which allowed us to capture passwords, PGP-encrypted order information, IP-Addresses, Bitcoins and other relevant information that may help law enforcement agencies worldwide to identify users of this marketplace. For more information about this operation, please consult our hidden service at http://politiepcvh42eav.onion.

This seizure was part of the Operation Bayonet, which includes the takeover of Hansa Market by the National Police of the Netherlands and the takedown of AlphaBay Market by the FBI on July 4, 2017.

Interview on the Dutch radio-station BNR with the Dutch police about this: https://www.bnr.nl/player/audio/10064595/10326740

English translation of the interview: https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkNetMarkets/comments/6oi25f/english_translation_of_dutch_interview_with_the/

Interview with another Europol guy: https://web.archive.org/web/20170722060156/https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/07/exclusive-dutch-cops-on-alphabay-refugees/

PGP auto-encryption

It is definitely compromised according to this interview. Please stick to the tips in this thread.

To dutch law enforcement: your signed message on your hidden service is shit. It proves nothing and can be re-used by anyone at their will. You only sign complete messages. Do not be on the same level as trappy.

Dream

Dream may be compromised too. The user /u/luckyduckquack posted 10 days ago that hansa was also compromised. Now he posts that dream is compromised as well. It is not certain, but be careful before running to a new market. Do not give law enforcement the triple-combo.

CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS ON OTHER MARKETS IF YOU REUSED THEM.

More information will bed edited in the post with time. But one for sure: the DNM scene is gonna be fucked for a while. You got this one law enforcement. but do not jerk off too hard reading the comments in this thread.

LE may have won this battle, but they will NEVER win the war on drugs. For as long as drugs are illegal the DNMs will thrive. RIP Hansa.

[427 Points] Swansonisms:

Good thing this is just a massive role playing sub with a bunch of bots, right everyone?

[377 Points] thebuttsofwar:

"Admin" on Hansa handled a support ticket for me after 20th Jun and was very expedient and professional

10/10 would use LE-controlled market again

[196 Points] Medacali:

Literally crying atm. I guess LEO want to see a rise in crime due to people doing IRL exchanges for drugs. Congrats Jeff Sessions you fucking twat

[194 Points] None:

Fucking gutted, Hansa was the best market yet and it didn't even get a real chance to change the scene.

[176 Points] WentzToAlshon:

Looks like I'll be sober for a while. Not trusting any markets ATM.

Also, expect btc to shoot down in value

edit: to the 80 people telling me its current rate, I didn't realize segwit was being implemented this week. Please stop informing me this

[152 Points] enaedinform:

Dream

i am/was a vendor on Dream. they have removed option for revoking vendor account in the last two days. i was actually thinking of quitting Dream for the last few months, and just looked at revoking my account a few days ago, so i could get the bond back. now the option is gone. suspicious.

also i believe there are some subtle changes to the graphics/fonts, etc. not 100% sure, but it seems different in the last day or two.

just FYI, i'd be VERY wary of Dream right now.

[153 Points] IriSnowpaws:

Things will stabilize, they always do.

The Great Game of whack-a-mole never ends. Stay safe.

[150 Points] jeffwinger_esq:

I'm not a DNM user but I've watched this pretty carefully. The part of the complaint alleging that Cazes had his laptop open to the server when LE showed up and that the computer contained the login credentials in plain text is incredible. All those security measures, and this guy has a .txt file with his passwords in it.

[113 Points] makedopegr8again:

Does anyone remember the woman who was a Tor engineer who had a warrant canary online? I'd really like to see if that warrant canary is still up.

[52 Points] None:

As markets get bigger, you need more people to run them. Not all of them practice good OPSEC. You bust one guy, you can probably flip people across the chain. Plus they recruit informants as well.

Unless your market's servers are located in Russia, you will get busted eventually.

[52 Points] SpiritButler:

Just so everyone knows, I always use a unique password for every site, and do my own PGP encryption offline. Anyone that has purchased from me has no threat coming from my end, and as long as the other markets aren't compromised, my operations will stay up and running.

After all, it's not like I ever cut my MDMA presses with fent. Leave me the fuck alone Europol!

[46 Points] 1ntr4sp3ctive:

Using a different account now here because of all this bullshit, the boys in blue always trying to slow up progress.

All that fent going around in the US certainly didn't fucking help.

Thank the devil for manual pgp encryption, tails, VPNs, full disc encryption and burner laptops!

Good luck to anyone who has serious reason for concern.

Live long and prosper.

[48 Points] InvestInAntshares:

To everyone who thinks they're screwed and wants to flee the country.

Do so ASAP. However, do some thorough research into extradition treaties between your home country and destination. Also, do not contact family members or affiliates via. technology unless you have a secure burner phone and are already out of the country.

[44 Points] theedgeoflurkdom:

It appears there is some vulnerability in tor itself, or at least the component of it that consists of the hidden services. This has probably been extant for a good period of time, but has not been accessible or utilized by LE until recently. It is not plausible that simple opsec mistakes compromised all these markets at the same time across international borders, and that they were compromised in such a way that the maximum number of people got doxxed.

Hansa was purposefully built up with PR on this sub, complete with a "closed registration" ruse to increase credibility, in order to "catch" those who fled from AB, which went down right after seizure and did not afford the opportunity for a "clean" transition to LE control. This was a huge operation spanning dozens of countries and hundreds of thousands of suspects. Although this is unprecedented, there is no reasonable doubt that this was not coordinated and planned. The "closed registration" aspect of the honeypot probably had limited impact once 10,000+ suspects had quickly been amassed.

The story about the AB suspect's downfall has some unbelievable elements. It appears parallel construction is at work.

Since we know the rabbit hole goes this far down, why not trek a bit further? How far do the arms of the state reach into the dirt?

I've been reading about "breakaway civilizations" recently, and I began to think. In the 1940s, the German intelligence services pioneered the use of institutionalized counterfeiting to sabotage a society and cause economic chaos, in their context targeting UK. Of course, in the 70s and onward, their US counterparts were long involved in the drug trade, facilitating the economic situation that makes gangs, cartels, and other violent criminal elements viable. In return, they got a source of income for secret projects, generally revolving around anticommunist initiatives that globalized their longstanding modern repression of political dissidents stretching from the nineteenth century to the 60s. Anyway, doing all that shit costs money, money which you might theoretically have but cannot be seen spending.

So, the deep state creates it. Much like how some of you role-players might imagine yourself using public wifi while using the bowels of the internet, these agencies of permanent government have historically found ways to circumvent the trivial limitations of social convention to make their dreams and designs possible. Whether they have printed fake money, sold drugs, sold people, or ran Hansa, they always found the "cheat codes" to society.

In the United States, there are essentially no laws on asset forfeiture, and recently the federal government has eliminated the moratorium on it. That means that millions of dollars will be given to LE with no regulations on how it can be spent. I am not aware of what the laws are like elsewhere, but regardless of that one might expect millions of euros and rubles and yen are regularly "disappeared" one way or another.

So what are these sites, anyway? The DNMs? Alphabay had this "Russian" vibe to it, but was run by a Canadian. Hansa pretended to be all about security, but was just a honeypot. Nothing is at it seems to be. So what if this is all part of the plan? What if the government, having created tor, is continuing to fund it because it is useful as a trap to draw and monitor activity?

It stands to reason that against a global adversary like Five Eyes, INTERPOL, etc, tor is not very useful. These are the people now profiting from the looting of the markets, and these people are also part of the same organizations that fund the tor project, without which there would have been no tor in the first place. Circumstantial? Perhaps. But certainly suspicious nonetheless.

This brings me to my point: what if tor, the basis for the current DNM system and the communication of political dissidents everywhere, is distributed as a honeypot? What if it has been purposefully kept in circulation as a passive tool of parallel consturction? Is it not eminently plausible that at least some element overlapping with the government has this capacity? This was how Vault 7 came to the fore, through networks of former government workers and their professional peer community passing knowledge on. Surely, there are even better kept secrets among those of that world, no?

Little is known about the founder of bitcoin either, so all bets are off with that. We know that blockchain analysis works surprisingly well, even past tumblers in many cases.

We often joke, but why in the fuck does the government allow a clearnet site, that requires javascript for posting privileges, to host discussion about the DNMs? This whole thing feeds into their interests, and so they cultivate and harvest the crop: us.

It might be in our best interests to keep our heads down. Most of us are simple consumers, and it is our consumption that has made us vulnerable to theft, kidnapping and murder by the state. It is not our fault; it's how we were raised to be. But we do get a choice in the matter of what path to continue along.

In this spirit, I will be calling an end to my lurking out here on the roleplaying forums. It's been fun, all. But the game is clearly up. There are forces at work that are larger than us, and those of us concerned with liberty must now decide between vice and victory.

As a last aside, many of you have fetishized markets and consumption as a path to liberty. In some cases this argument has merit; consumption is a part of life, and commodities can be useful. However, it is my humble opinion that if we all continue down this path we are inevitably going to collide with our own destruction. Full freedom cannot be achieved through an alienated online market, but it can be realized through a community that respects each others' autonomy and protects each other from external threats. Competition and greed and betrayal are the hallmarks of the game, especially online. It is not possible to harness it for good, certainly not in present chaotic circumstances. As long as there are powerful authoritarian governments, staying in this game will lead to addiction, incarceration, and death for many. Certainly, the species will survive and evolve, but what of the individual creatures? How "low" is "low hanging fruit"? If you choose to stay in...take care of yourselves, and don't forget that there is no loyalty in the game: you can only hope to build that in real life.

P.S. 1 BTC says trump is connected to alphabay

[43 Points] NotAlpha02123:

the DoJ document alleges he pulled a DPR in that he posted on clearnet forums under his username linked to his personal email, and early on used his personal email for password reset functionality or some shit for AB.

maybe this is parallel construction or some shit but this guy made some dumb mistakes.

he was also logged in to alphabay when they busted him, again, learned nothing from DPR. also means he was retarded enough to be running the world's largest darknet market of all time on a personal or very nearby wifi connection. great. genius.

edit: he wrote in an unencrypted text doc obtained when his laptop was seized and turned on and also not in an encrypted state that he had a networth of over $23 million, forget the exact number but its listed, they seized $8m in cryptocurrencies, monero, etherum, and bitcoin.

its way sexier to think of this as two hundred crypto nerds at the NSA who broke TOR and fucking AES-256 bit and fucking PGP and fucking one time pads, in reality it appears to be some really fucking dumb mistakes by an arrogant, braggadocious man who never bothered to read the wired magazine story on DPR.

EDIT again: there's someone else in the US under investigation who may have been arrested by now, apparently a staff member. this could've been disc0, onionh00d, desnake, trappy, penissmith, bigmuscles, or vaas. vaas and bigmuscles had shit english. desnake seems likely. penissmith didn't seem worried on hansa forums about being caught, i don't think he's stupid enough to. disc0 and onionh00d should've been smart enough not to fuck themselves. trappy is quite possible imo

Well after 4 years I finally got fucked by a closure. Market crashed 15 minutes after I placed a $155 order. Are we getting our money back after 30 days or what? I never really understood if it was just multi-sig or if regular escrow is protected, too

[18 Points] _PrinterPam_:

A reminder to all

Buyers: Encrypt your order info on your own computer; do NOT make use of a market's message encryption function (if LE has control of the servers, they can/will capture the info before it is encrypted, server-side). Consider using differently-named accounts on different markets and/or 2FA; but definitely use different passwords.

Vendors: 2FA. 'Nuff said.

Found the following in another report.. time to clean house guys. https://www.volkskrant.nl/tech/politie-neemt-illegale-drugsmarktplaats-hansa-over-na-infiltratie~a4507394/

Police intercepted in recent weeks in their own words thousands of unencrypted messages between sellers and buyers orders. With a large number of orders the delivery address could be traced. About 10 thousand foreign addresses of buyers Hansa Market are transferred to Europol.

Furthermore, more than five hundred Dutch delivery addresses reported in postal and courier companies in order to stop the deliveries.

[8 Points] SirGlassDickJones:

The whole asset forfeiture thing this week makes sense now.

[9 Points] Cherokeerayne:

Wtf I literally just ordered this morning 😭😭

[9 Points] xan_nax:

Logically this would make the most sense. The two biggest markets dropped within a week. Every single user and vendor is trying to find a new stable, secure and popular market. Don't you guys think the feds have the capability to have a professional looking market that just pops up in the next coming weeks or months?

It's pretty damn clear they are targeting the DN right now and every market with traffic.... let the low hanging fruit fall off people.

Don't be stupid and hop on the next "big market" .. It Will most likely be completely run by LE.

JUST TAKE HANSA AS AN EXAMPLE! EVERYONE JUMPED SHIP TO HANSA WHEN IT WAS AN IMPLEMENTED HONEYPOT WEEKS BEFORE.

take this with a grain of salt... but LE isn't as stupid as y'all think. They just rat trapped thousands of vendors and users because ONE market went down.

Tread carefully... I'm out of this business for a good while

[9 Points] V0rz:

You have to assume now, that any new market place is a law enforcement honey trap.

[9 Points] throwi__:

I am asking myself if LE can just operate a DNM without facing the risk of getting sued? E.g., what if somebody died from an overdose and the relatives of the victim could proof that the drugs were ordered from Hansa during the time that LE operated the market. I rememeber that during Ross' trial, relatives of a overdose victim testified against Ross arguing that the victim had ordered the drugs from SR1.

Also from LEs perspective there must be a moral conflict between continuing the site with the prospect of catching a few noobs who don't know how to encrypt vs. risking the lives of the citizens they should protect by providing a platform to trade drugs (especially in light of the recent fent discussions). It would be interesting to see a courts opinion on that issue...

[7 Points] boofthemtonsilstones:

Really wish I had re-upped on acid sooner 😔

[6 Points] 0xJADD:

Am I the only one who thinks the Hansa takedown is a giant troll from europol? Scare tactics? Everyone is losing their shit but all we know for sure is that they have access to the .onion domain.

The information about vendor arrests have no recent relevance (all the arrests are from 2013-2015) and the 'active' and 'identified' lists could quite easily be scraped from publicly available info from the site beforehand. Maybe we should consider the possibility that they did not have any access to the source code nor databases.

Furthermore, why would they make a website? Why provide specific dates of when they took control? Why tell us what information they possess?

This seems like a psyop to me. The website is just there as a scare tactic/deterrent for vendors, buyers and especially newcomers, hence the high attention to media-bait website aesthetics.

Or maybe I'm wrong, and everyone is fucked. Only time will tell.

[7 Points] DarkNet_Shill:

fuck my withdrawals kickin in brah

This is actually shocking news! First AB now Hansa... Wow! I need to check read/watch all the links find out how exactly they went about this or get more info at least! Very sneaky on FEDs behalf! Anyone else come to the sudden realization that the post from AB Mods on their sub advertising Hansa was most likely posted from a compromised account by LE? Feel slyly abused rn! Why did hansa keep registrations closed take 0.3btc for vendor bonds and then close like this? They could have stayed open got all info on everyone then closed. Its BS imao.

F the police. F interpol. And F the freemasons involved in this hegelian scam.

Well its safe to say these things the FEDS have the keys to the castle for alphabay all the money and everything else . [6 Points] cheapcab:

This is exactly why you should use pgp encryption on all sensitive data and do it yourself.

Don't trust any market's auto encryption feature and definitely don't send your info clear text.

We would like to see markets steer clear of even offering auto encryption and to code their markets to reject clear text totally.

[5 Points] Tfiles101:

Now that Hansa is shutdown where is everyone going to go?

[4 Points] deep_touch:

They would have waited on the press release until the double honeypot happened, but sessions needed good press today

[4 Points] None:

Most comments I have ever seen on a thread here !! Commenting for history's sake

[3 Points] FbisGaY:

People should have know that there was something fishy after they arrested alexandre and didnt gave a official press release. We all know that is the most important part of their whole operation but yet they kept quiet about it and we all took it for granted while heading into their trap. Shame on us.

[3 Points] ginsengwarrior:

Big vendors best start training up at the local treadmills, never know when you might bump into LE when out for a stroll and need to be hitting the legs.

[3 Points] tezosdude:

Does anyone have the text of the seizure the Dutch police posted?

Fucking RIP

[3 Points] ice_cream4breakfast:

Oh this is bad. I take it all the time lock transactions are worthless now.

[3 Points] Bigw0rmer:

They ross 'd him .. HE WAS LOGGED IN AS ADMIN WHEN HE GOT BUSTED

[3 Points] cheeseoverthemoon:

I thought Cazes was DeSnake, not alpha02? They only arrested him, so one of the other two AB admins is still free. Also I'm curious how they caught the Hansa guys.

EDIT: Cazes was alpha02, DeSnake is still alive/out there.

[3 Points] Whynotyou69:

If someone placed an order, but never got said order, how many fucks should that person give?

[2 Points] ImperialTuneWizard:

The LE seems to have a large emphasis on opioids with DNMs. What if there was a market that banned opioids all together? Would this be more successful and under the eye less by LE?

[3 Points] Bigw0rmer:

the person that inboxed me saying that "i was tring to spread a fake dox and lead people down the wrong path, and its not working " and deleted there account Should inbox me ASAP !

[3 Points] fatandhilarious:

I ordered $50 of weed. Hope they don't come after me for that.

[3 Points] ProsecutorsBTC:

u/wombat2combat - some relevant info: This is the BTC of the "Prosecutor" who has managed to get the funds from orders placed on Hansa directed to his wallet:

https://blockchain.info/address/3QTsYcjHPJk9thFRPeoV45Qa1tQMe1Jj42

throwaway, will not be used again

[3 Points] mynamesalwaystaken:

I'm sure large lists, with addresses, do not contribute to the security issues on DN sites

[3 Points] taimapanda:

but.. surely anyone with proper opsec is safe anyway? (I never ever use auto-pgp, you might as well not even encrypt) If the only thing that may be compromised is passwords then just change them. So what if they can follow a username, change it if you feel the need to.

[3 Points] pandazevrywhre:

Anyone know if there was any kind of JS exploit used on Hansa?

[3 Points] Hot_In_Here:

LOL was going to say, they definitely spent money hiring a graphic designer for Hansa

[3 Points] DARKNETPANICS:

I CAME HERE TO SAY HOLY FSHIT

[3 Points] onetruezenyatta:

anyone have any thoughts about pushing taboo? Probably still wait?

[2 Points] Cocinacowboy:

Holy shit.

[2 Points] murderhomelesspeople:

It'll be intersting to see if they managed to capture real user IPs, curious if using Whonix or Qubes would've protected against this. If you use the TBB on windows and maybe even linux I'd fucking worried, same goes if you buy coins from people who have your info and didn't tumble/ clean them.

I can see a lot of vendors dissappearing after this. Decentralized markets anyone?

[2 Points] pizzafapper:

u/wombat2combat [+1] , mate they've identified buyers and arrested some vendors. Here's the link - https://i.gyazo.com/9a8d22b70ec37917b003bf20586cff67.png

You should put it up in your edit. Buyers are gonna go down.

[2 Points] InvestInAntshares:

So since when was alphabay compromised, also june 20th? so I assume unencrypted orders from more than 2 months ago would be safe, since they were already deleted from the archives?
