Linux = RedHat code = Government Code with hidden backdoors... This is not the case with OpenBSD

This might fall on deaf ears might get me banned but people need to understand that a majority of the Linux code is written by RedHat and they get their funding from the government. Furthermore the Linux community as a whole does not re-read (audit) their code to ensure that no sneaky developer has snuck in a backdoor.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellshock_%28software_bug%29

I understand that Linux is open source but so is OpenBSD. The code for Linux was originally written by Linus Torvald, but now its RedHat (funded by the Goverment) who does a TON of coding now for Linux. Essentially Linux = Government Funded Operating System

Linux may have been built for the average joe, but it is not this way anymore. So much of the code in Linux is not checked at all!

OpenBSD is a much safer operating system, and they regularly audit their code. Yes OpenBSD has had bugs (Heartbleed) but they have been much more difficult to exploit.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartbleed

It will be a lot tougher learning OpenBSD compared to Linux. The community is not there to hold your hand and in fact they will insult you for not taking your time to educate yourself because there is a plethora of written material.

But at the end of the day you are using an operating system were the code is not financed by RedHat aka the Government.

New flash: Tor is also funded by the US gov't. Don't use it, it's not safe!!! /s

Every operating system is vulnerable, even OpenBSD was suspected of having an FBI backdoor [src]. It seems you're blindly assuming it's the safer option. Also the majority of contributions to the Linux kernel are from unaffiliated developers, with a further 7.6% from uknown companies [src p.11].

I'm not saying you shouldn't use OpenBSD, I'm not saying you should use Linux. Use whatever you know and to the best of your knowledge can trust.

[2 Points] drimilr:

Red hat is by far the largest contributor to Linux kernel, but it's still a pretty small percent.

[2 Points] drimilr:

Also keep in mind that red hat is not the keeper of the kernel. And before any kernel changes get accepted you'll have armies of top tier coders and Linux geeks pouring over the code to make sure it's up to snuff.

Now if you're running red hat, you'll have the kernel all other linux boxes are running but it has different packages that may have bugs. All bugs are trackable and visible on bugzilla. Security ones often list very little info, esp 0 days and other highly sensitive ones.

Red hat is fairly transparent about their bugs in packages except when it puts the distro and thus their clients in danger.

Edit: a word - features -to- packages

[2 Points] drimilr:

Hey pal. Sounds like you're an openBSD shill.

You need to bitch to BASH package maintainers and not some strawman like red hat.

Linux did not create BASH nor do they maintain it. There are BASH package maintainers for that.

Or put down the meth pipe.

Enjoy openBSD, it's a good OS, truly it is! And it uses BASH to.

Who let the openssl bug run wild for years?

Makes my heart bleed when stuff like that happens

[1 Points] GuessWhoMeOrYou:

OpenBSD is a Unix operating system, not a Linux os. Yes, they share many similarities but are actually quite different internally. From a users perspective, Linux and Unix operating systems basically have the same functionality in terms of user commands and the GUI used however internally, there are several differences between the two such as limited hardware support for Unix systems compared to Linux, the kernel and the delivery and implementation of patches / updates just to name a few. Unix was developed and has evolved more as a licenced version (although OpenBSD and others are all open source) propriety os for commercial purposes where as Linux was developed and released under GPL (GNU General Public License) as an open source operating system and released worldwide.

I have to agree with you about OpenBSD being a great os for those of us who are security minded. One of the best IMO.

WOW OP. I can pass for sane thanks to folks like yourself, keep fighting the good fight.

Anyone can download the source code of the linux kernel and read and compile it themselves. It's posted online at linux.org

Also how does what you claim apply to other distros? I know tails, for instance is built on top of Debian. Then there's the roll your own distros like LFS.
