When I downloaded Tails awhile ago, I double checked and made sure the long password was the same. However, it wouldn't load up at the beginning. After some research I found that if you hit tab when Tails is booting, then hit control + a to bring up a cursor, then delete the "L" in live=media it would work and after I did this Tails worked. Is this normal or is this a problem?

It's normal for a certain type of USB drives. Some USB drives identify themselves as "fixed disks" instead of removable media. Tails wants to only boot from removable media. By changing that boot variable, you are working around the problem. There is some low probability that it could be used against you:
