Imgur is the standard Reddit image sharer. Speedy, simple, and no caps, very few sites can compete. Almost everybody loves it.
Unfortunately, Imgur is not as anonymous as everyone thinks. They remove your EXIF and metadata from the public image, but all of that data is logged with the photo on their back end, not discarded. See their privacy policy here for more info. That data will be available to anyone who gets access to the imgur servers. This could happen silently though a gov agency via a gag order. Imgur also blocks those that are using Tor from uploading.
Do not be the low hanging fruit. Using Imgur should not be an option for those that want to remain anon, while having photos hosted for product reviews.
Just to be perfectly clear, imgur links containing photos you did not upload are perfectly fine, and you still retain your anonymity. It is only photos that you upload that can harm you both now and in the future.
As Imgur does not provide an effective solution, lets examine the alternatives:
* www.Mediacru.sh (also on Tor: http://mediacrs5ujufxog.onion/) Pros: located in Sweden, does not require JS, open source, clears all metadata/exif, respects do not track, encrypted connection Cons: Tracks with Google analytics if Do not track is set to off (not a problem with Tor browser), logs hash encrypted IP address (to prevent CP); IP addresses are not viewable to anyone, including those that run the site) dead :(
* www.img.bi (on Tor: http://imgbifwwqoixh7te.onion/ and I2P too) Pros: darknet options, full encryption, protection from MIM attacks, open source, clears all metadata/exif Cons: needs JS (dealbreaker for me), stores encrypted IP for a day
* www.Anonpic.com Pros: none known Cons: no privacy policy, just anon in the website title...
* www.anonimg.com Pros: Claims not to keep logs, claims to clear all metadata/exif, cons: cleanet only, not open source/ no way to back claims
* www.anonmgur.com (down at time of writing this, may be permanent) Pros: well known of? claims to clear all metadata/exif cons: keeps encrypted IP for 6 hours, not open source/ no way to back claims
* www.anony.ws (updating TOS soon) Pros: claims to clear all metadata/exif, cons: keeps IP for a 2 weeks? not open source/ no way to back claims currently blocked by reddit, due to the admins being stupid.
* www.bayimg.com Pros: same people as TPB, Cons: past legal troubles, no claims (found) to remove metadata/exif
* www.anonfiles Pros: anon in title, trusted for some reason Cons: Very incomplete TOS, not open source,
* Infotomb.
This is not a complete list, and any suggestions are appreciated, and will be reviewed in the comments. I am not a complete source on this topic, and the research presented above is not totally conclusive.
Again, it is strongly encouraged that you do not use imgur to host product photos, but instead use a hoster that respects your anonymity.
edit: formatting, wording, and live links.
Not to be an ass, but discouraging imgur use on the basis that it does not remove metadata is pretty thin.
If you are not sure your picture is free of potentially identifying metadata, you should not post your picture period. If you are, it hardly matters if the service claims to strip your pics of the metadata.
Same why you don't post your address in clear text regardless of your market's policy on storing data and automatic PGP encryption.
edit: okay, actually, it's probably a good idea to encourage some of those over imgur anyway but I think it should be stressed that exif data should be removed by yourself.
