I'm getting fucked by a blackmailer. Question about going to the cops.

I don't want to get into all the details, but I find myself in a very bad situtation with a blackmailer. Because he's involved my workplace, I think the police might get involved whether I want them to or not.

Can I be charged with obstruction of justice or something, if I don't come completely clean with what I know? I mean the email he sent me has lots of details about multiple purchases I've made, and I'd rather not share that with LE or my employer. If I delete the email and play dumb, could I get in trouble for destroying evedince?

EDIT: Everyone needs details apparently. The asshole is doing a crude DDOS attack against my work, constant phone hang ups, fax spam, and our website is down. He says if I don't pay him by friday, he's going to tell my employer that it was all because of me and that I could have prevented it. He says next week will be 10 times worse and I probably won't make it past tuesday.

If you don't want to get into details you likely did something retarded. The first step in avoiding drama and bs is to not do stupid shit.

Moving on.

What exactly is he going to say? "Hey, I know you don't know me but I am a totally honest drug dealer and I feel like someone who uses my product shouldn't work for you, please look into these screenshots I took of a notepad file, totally proving that this guy super does drugs like foreal. I have no incentive to do this and just like totally wanted to give you guys the heads up"

Destroy all shit you don't want someone to find, don't respond to him, and if anyone asks you have no idea what they are talking about .(period)

You can't get in trouble for destroying anything before the police are involved. Once the police are involved its a different story.

[8 Points] lolita87:

  1. consume/destroy all contraband (in case 5-0 gets a search warrant)
  2. Talk to a lawyer and see whether or not you can/want press charges for blackmail and/or libel if he shows.
  3. profit?

[9 Points] None:

This dude is an idiot if hes calling your works phone. You should call the cops and tell them some dude that has a grudge against you is harassing you, and you'd like phone records. Then see him go to jail.

[4 Points] allobarbital:

what are you going to get in trouble for? I'm assuming the drugs have been delivered, and are gone. No drugs, no case. Clean house and tell him to fuck off

[4 Points] sohhlz:

Be aware that when you delete an email, it is not deleted immediately and may never be deleted. If the email is on your company's email server, there will be backups that your employer can review and the authorities can subpoena.

If the email is on almost any commercial email provider, there will also be backups.

One of the few ways you would be safe is if he emailed you a PGP encrypted message and you deleted all copies of your secret key. That encrypted message would then be unreadable by anyone.

Of course, the blackmailer would probably still have a copy of the message.

How does he know where you work?

[1 Points] LongHairBri:

nut up and quit being a punk

delete everything and play dumb, ought to be easy for you

[1 Points] cactuzx:

Dox him and do exactly the same thing

[1 Points] Trappy_Pandora:

Those emails are saved, somewhere. Mark them as spam, don't delete them, you may need them as evidence to defend yourself.

[0 Points] c0derx:

record all communication with him, send it to the cops especially the part about DDOS and say he's some random off the internet who has been "bullying" you and tracked you down, tell them he was trying to force you to do gay shit on webcam and when you refused he launched an all out attack on your workplace etc... YOU be the one to call the cops (after you clean out your home PC of all evidence, I suggest a format and a 0 fill.

Can you quit that job and get another somewhere else?

Or voluntarily put yourself in re-hab?

Just options.
