Subpoena's to Reddit are not needed anymore to acquire user data

As can be read here: https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/4cr8za/the_warrant_canary_is_missing_from_the_2015/ referring to https://np.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/4cqyia/for_your_reading_pleasure_our_2015_transparency/

The warrant canary is something a company can display, stating they did not receive a National Security Letter in the last year. NSL's are gag orders, forcing companies to provide all info LE wants 'in the interest of national security'. As it is forbidden to communicate that a NSL has been received, a warrant canary uses this fine line that it is not forbidden to not post that you didn't receive one. Essentially this means that they did receive one, although they cannot talk about it.

In short: No subpoena's are needed anymore, since LE can ask info under the National Security Letter. This also means that Reddit does not has (or may?) inform you about the info they gave to LE about you.

This news is months-old news.

better watch out /u/vendor_bbmc!!!!

This is why you take measures to secure your visits, comments, upvotes, etc. to Reddit.

Example: this is not my main account. TOR is not the only thing I use. I don't visit, upvote, talk about anything illegal unless I just flick the 'on' switch to a few things.
This is what everyone 'should' be either doing, or considering, if they want to truly be safe (especially when dealing with Darknet Market discussions).

Edit: If you are really, really worried, just look up various Linux Live USB distros, which seem to be catered towards good security.

Wrap it up, boys!

Not really a change in risk. Normal police activity would still require a subpoena, and there wasn't anything stopping a "national security" harvesting of data before the death of the warrant canary, anyway.

[1 Points] obsidianchao:

Not true. They still need a subpoena or warrant, but Reddit has no way to tell us about it. The NSL is just to keep them from saying anything about it.

Keep your slopsec up to snuff.

I don't think the feds could use a national security letter for drugs anyway. You would have to be talking about terrorist stuff for that to apply.

Subpoenas aren't gonna do much to protect your data if you say something stupid either way.

I'm sure they've subpoena'd lots of vendors' IP addresses for a long time now.
