OpSec Question - Can LE get a Subpoena from Reddit just with IP address?

Basically can they request a subpoena if all they know is your IP address or do they need to state what account they want the information on?

So I shouldn't browse this sub when I'm bored from my phone?

A few troll accounts weren't subpoenaed on this subreddit. The FBI doesn't have a go on markets after they've shut down or investigate accounts after admitting they've bought a few doses of MDMA off of a vendor that didn't have proper stealth.

Gwern was playing poker with the other mods and accidentally got dealt a joker. He thought he was a 5 star stud in a game of 5 card stud to rid the subreddit of the doxxing attempts that happened after the Evo meltdown.

Don't worry, I'm not fueling up my jet and taking off just yet. They only thought I was. It is like a thousand spoons when all you need is a knife. Alanis Morissette loved robot meth; she was on it when she penned her hit song "Ironic". What was I talking about again? Did I mention this is a parody account?

yes

I would think they would have to have the specific account because it would compromise the privacy of every other account which the point of a warrant is suppose to protect. Then again they could have reddit find the account linked to said ip address and save the privacy of otger accounts which I think reddit is more likely to do to save the privacy of innocent non related accounts. If they have an ip address and enough evidence no judge will deny singing off on any subpoena. Just my 2 cents with my small understanding of current laws in the usa.

They would subpoena reddit for your IP address

A subpoena can use whatever criteria the lawyer/judge feels is necessary.

That means that they could send reddit a subpoena that says "gives us every bit of info you have (IP Addresses, times of activity, contents of posts and private messages, and all other related data) for the username 'UndercoverLE'," or it could instead be targeted against "all users who have accessed the website from IP addresses in Estonia," or "all users who had any activity on /r/DarkNetMarkets on October 1, 2015 with the letter "J" in their username," and so on.

There's not really any big cracks to slip through, if that's what you're asking. They can be as targeted as they need to be. The best case is that reddit will say, "sorry, we don't have that data," but that's not very likely to happen.

LE would use subpoenas when using your Reddit account as a starting point, or for correlating your connection information with already gathered digital evidence.

If LE is starting from you and connecting you to Reddit, then you are already fucked.

Look here: http://reddit.com/account-activity

This is your connection time and IP data data. This is available to you, the end user, through a web browser.

Consider everything posted on Reddit, including private subs and PM to be available to LE on request, regardless of having your IP address.

I personally wouldn't ever make any incriminating comments on reddit without using tor and/or vpn.

I'm sure LE monitor this sub with a magnifying glass and try to put together profiles and techniques. I know I would if I wer in the business.
